Collaboration with Hoppin' Frog Brewery

In today’s fast paced world, it is often difficult to stop racing around and enjoy the good things in life that hard-working people deserve. For those who search for this long lost sense of leisure that is reminiscent of Southern living, slow down and kick back with Dan’l Webster. Like the racing frog from Mark Twain’s short story, this Imperial Porter will take you out of the race with its intensely heavy weight. With just a kiss of a new, experimental hop that has notes of orange, chocolate and coconut, and then aged on soft maple wood, this thick and satisfying porter is a great way to forget about the race, getting you one step closer to winning the marathon of life.

Color of dark chocolate hot cocoa with an extremely massive, dark mocha head.

Impressively potent nutty and roasty aromas, verging on woody, reminds of Palo Santo Marron, one of my all time favorites, minus the cedar-like element.

Dan'l Webster is unbelievably tasty, with big nutty and roasty flavors, almost charred pizza crust (one of my favorite things on a Neapolitan style), thick, dense yet soft and frothy chocolate syrup, and a hint of soy.

Appearance: pours a deep mahogany tending towards black a finger or two of a tan head with strong retention and leaving behind a big solid lacing. completely opaque due to the darkness.

Smell: coffee and chocolate malts, some dark fruits, vanilla/coconut possibly from the wood. light citrus or orange peel

Taste: strong and sweet malts, notes of chocolate, roasted malts and a little coffee. dark fruits come in along with some orange peel. backend has some wood flavor and light notes of vanilla and maybe some coconut (they put it in my head so maybe its not actually there. has a little bit of maple syrup to it as well.

Mouthfeel: nice smoothness with a thick, chewy body. some bitterness but sweetness wins the balance in the end.

Overall: a very interesting and unique beer. I really like Cigar City's use of different woods and the thickness of their stouts/porters. another great beer. I'd be curious to try more with this hop to see what it really brings to the taste.

Large shared bottles in 2014 & 2015..
Essentially black, opaque body with a decent head.
Full body.

Rich, well balanced flavor with plenty of dark malts and.hints of dark fruits. Very well hidden ABV.

Thick, creamy, chocolatey. Loved every sip. The body is what I hope every porter to be.

Got this one from 7clutch in a recent box. Cheers dude!

From a bomber into a snifter
Collaboration with Hoppin’ Frog
Bottled April 10, 2014

APPEARANCE: Thick pour comes out very dark brown, pretty much black, and yields a 2+ finger, medium looking, creamy, tan head with very good retention. Black body with medium levels of carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a full cap wisp cap. Ring remains with falling dots down the glass.

SMELL: Lots of chocolate for sure, with both pure and milk chocolate aromas, vanilla and sweet cream, coconut, a touch of wood and some roasted notes as well. Really nice but could be a touch bolder for a perfect score.

TASTE: Lovely flavors, with sweet vanilla and cream, coconut, milk chocolate and some butterscotch up front. Lots of flavor. More sweetness at the swallow, then a bold and lingering finish of sweet vanilla cream, coconut, light orange notes, some soft maple wood, and a good dose of pure, bitter chocolate as well. A solid roasted base supports the show as well. This is what dreams are made of. Decadent.

PALATE: Medium body and medium levels of carbonation. Very creamy on the palate, goes down smooth and finishes silky and mouth-coating. Nice here as well.

OVERALL: Wonderful, wonderful stuff. I’m a big fan of both CCB and Hoppin’ Frog in the stout department, and although this is described as a porter, they certainly nailed it on the head with this one. Big and thick, full bodied and piles and piles of unique and interesting flavor all over the place. The label claims that they’ve used a new, experimental hop with that imparts chocolate, coconut and orange flavors, and if this really is the case, then this is the stout wonder-hop. Really enjoyed this and would love to drink it again sometime. Thanks again for the stuff 7clutch. Cheers!

Thanks to moose3285 for this bottle amongst the 926 he’s sent north over the years. Two good breweries in one 22 oz. bottle split with my wife.

The pour is dead fish black with enough carbonation to scare off my bubble-hating daughter. The smell is classic Cigar City: rough dark malt sweetness & a dime bag of chocolate, along with a low level of roast. Not bad.

Dan’l Webster is more woody than my Easton 33” batting practice bat. An entire roof beam of maple locks onto the palate & makes me feel like Treebeard is ambling across my tongue. Dark sweetness that churns close to maple syrup is prominent, followed by dark chocolate, light bitterness, lime (?), black licorice, lighter than expected roast brushes my cheek right at the end. But that wood. Trademark Cigar City thickness touches me in all the right places. I’m slugging this like session water.

I have come to realize that I love me some wood enough to have my dentures made out of it when I get there. Do you think CC would make some out of maple for me? That would be awesome. Very good on the border patrol of excellent.
