On tap at Culinary Cafe. Served in a goblet.

Appearance - Black with a nice khaki head. Thick collar. Nice lacing.

Smell - Lots of grassy hops. Nutty malts. Bitter chocolate malts.

Taste - Nutty malts. Light chocolate malt. Aggressively grassy and grapefruity. Very bitter. Lingering hop oils and astringency.

Mouthfeel - Medium body. Very bitter.

Overall - Tasted good up front but got a little harsh in the back.

Pours an effervescent ebony with 3+ fingers of mocha colored head. Great lacing & head retention

S: Carob & roastyness

T: Roastyness, a little dark fruit & charred grain, some pineyness up front. Carob & roastyness as this warms. Some dark chocolate & even a little mint, before pineyness & charred grain dominates as this warms. Finishes piney, a little grapefruitty, & with charred grain & with a little woody

MF: Medium bodied, firm carbonation, alright balance

Drinks fairly easy, not completely to my liking, but not a bad take on the style

Haven't had many black ales previous to this so still don't know exactly to expect.
Poured from a can into DFH IPA glass.

A) 4.0 Dark brown with with red outline when held to the light. Poured fairly roughly and received a dark tan head about 4 fingers high including about a fingers worth rising above the glass, thick enough that it retained its shape without sliding down the outside of the glass. Very little lacing to speak of but the head stayed, slowly diminishing but never entirely dissipating. ( Note very nearly same results on the second glass with a softer pour)

S) 3.5 Mostly coffee and slightly burnt toast with hints of floral and dark fruit.

T) 4.5 As the smell indicated coffee and burnt toast were on the forefront. This was followed by blackberries figs and wood with just a touch of smoke. Low bitterness comes into play here, mild and not detracting from the flavors at all like some pale ales that I have tried. The finish is dry and bread like without being as toasted as the initial flavor.

M) 3.75 On the thinner side of middling, more what I would expect from a pale ale than a porter, but just thick enough that its presence is noticeable on the tongue. Would have a velvety feel other than its carbonation which is just a bit more than what I prefer when I look at a dark beer, even after the near colossus of a head that I first received.

O) 4.25 Overall I really enjoyed this despite the fact that I've had a stuffy nose for the last 3 months. Whenever I read a book where a superb "dark home brewed beer" is mentioned this is damn near exactly what I think of . Cigar City and Great Lakes did a terrific job with this, thank goodness for damn wandering birds.

Authors Note: My first review don't judge me too harshly.
