22oz bottle acquired by a friend from the taproom. Bottled 12/17/14. Served in a Cigar City teku.
Pours black with two and a half fingers of khaki head. Burgundy highlights show around the edges. The froth fades to a full halo without leaving any lace.
Smells of cocoa powder, slight oxidation, roasty malts and burnt caramel. Not bad but it doesn't particularly inspire me either.
Flavor starts with some bitingly bittersweet cocoa that remains throughout. Along with that dark chocolate are notes of heavily roasted malt, burnt caramel, syrup, overdone toast, soy sauce and alcohol. Plenty of dark and roasty flavors but for my tastes there is a absence of balancing sweetness. The alcohol is by no means hidden but a year in the cellar has at least softened the abrasive edge it had when fresh.
Thick, almost syrupy full feel with relatively soft carbonation. Bittersweet burnt chocolate, soy sauce and toast linger in the finish.
Cigar City makes some of the best stouts I've had but Batch 7 of 110K + OT missed the mark for me. While I enjoyed the nice, full feel the flavor and aroma lacked the sweet edge I crave to balance all the bitter cocoa and roast. All in all it waa ok but not something I'd but again.
