Reviewed from (long-standing) notes. Poured from the 750mL bottle into a Cigar City Hunahpu goblet. Consumed on 12/21/15.

A: Dark – essentially black – and opaque. Forms a finger’s worth of brown head that lasts wonderfully. Almost no visible carbonation bubbles. A very nice-looking beer.

S: Rich and sweet – chocolate and tobacco, cacao and sherry. The sherry reminds me of a combination of a light bourbon with a vinous sweetness. Mild oak tannins as well.

T: Dark chocolate and big dark toasted malts. Sherry sweetness is balanced by much more dry oak and barrel character than I got in the nose. This does dry out quite a bit in the middle, and there’s maybe a touch of smokiness or barrel char in the middle too. Some sherry booziness comes through, then more cacao and pipe tobacco. Chocolate and sherry with some fading oak dryness in the end.

M: A big, thick, sticky body, with fairly low carbonation sensation. The alcohol is obvious, but restrained for a barrel-aged stout.

O: Wow. It might not be Barrel-Aged Hunahpu, but the sherry treatment really worked for the Zhukov. I'm not sure what to make of the charred flavor in the middle. It might be from the barrel, or maybe something I hadn't picked up before in Marshal Zhukov? I’m not certain, but it's not unpleasant. And either way, this was really, really good.

A - Pitch black pour, lots of legs, viscous on the sides of the glass. Thick looking.

S - Cherries, dark fruit, sherry, delicate coconut, some cocoa.

T - Cocoa, coconut, light cherry, aggressive oak flavor, faint molasses and a touch of dark fruit.

M - Full bodied, thick, viscous, slippery, sticky on the lips. Some warming on the way down but fairly subdued for the ABV.

A - Another Marshal variant worth a try.

Bottle from Cigar City shared at the meeting.
Inky black with a decent tan head that persists. Chocolate roast and thick molasses and licorice with some sharp vinous sherry notes. Very thick very sweet, but pretty tasty too.

Pours a super dark midnight color. Aroma is really dark chocolate and charred malts. Flavor is chocolate with a light caramel flavor, a hint of booze a really roasted/ charred malty backbone. Overall this was very tasty.

Zhukov. I have loved many men, but you are perhaps my favorite. Especially when you come in a 750ML bottle…& aged in sherry bottles? Come here. Split with my wife. I mean…never mind.

The pour is black with a head that’s shorter-lived than a rabid mayfly. The nose is nearly all sherry, ergo fruity, along with a soft background of chocolate & sweet malt. Delicious.

Marshal Zhukov’s - Sherry Aged is like Zhukov at a masquerade ball - barely recognizable. The sherry is on this like a whore on Tyrion. Briskly fruity yet sweet, white grapes, insistent vanilla, candied sugar with an echo of Belgium, all wine-like up in my grill. Beneath the barrel is the base beer crying for attention with sweet malt, bit of chocolate, tiny flecks of roast; but Zhukov’s proper is only a fever-dream in this brew. Thick as the original & just as easy to drink & I could do so until stout was leaking out of my armpits.

A case of the barrel actually muting & diverting some of the beautiful components of the base beer. Still. Even muted, Morphine is better than about any band out there, capiche? Ditto up in this. Wonderful beer.

This review is from recent pours from the bottle and on tap. Tried this in 2015 Huna day and thought it was too sweet and a little over done. But the age has made this beer phenomenal. The Zhukov base provides great mouth feel and toasty chocolate notes and the sherry barrel has mellowed some with the sweetness lurking in the finish. Becomes extremely drinkable as it warms and almost addicting. Drinking great right now and such a nice treat because it's different than the 100 bourbon BA stouts out there at the moment. Grab one it's more special than you think and holding up great... Getting better.

Got this one from 7clutch recently. Lovely find. Cheers man!

From a 750 into a snifter.
Ale aged in Sherry barrels

APPEARANCE: Thick, opaque black pour yields a 2+ finger, thicker looking, creamy, dark tan head with great retention. Opaque black body with med-low levels of carbonation. Head slowly fades to a thick cap and leaves some lacing as it recedes. Slight wisp and ring remain leaving some falling dots of lacing down the glass. Great look.

SMELL: Oak, lots of nice sherry, grapes, light cherry notes, milk chocolate, vanilla and sweet cream on the nose. Dark fruits and alcohol as well. Very bold and the barrel aging has definitely left its mark.

TASTE: Very flavorful up front, with lots of sherry, white wine, oak, milk chocolate and sweet vanilla cream. Sweet beer for sure. Some more sherry and oak at the swallow with a big, bold and lingering finish of more barrel character, oak, milk chocolate, vanilla cream, caramel sweetness, some light coffee bitterness and molasses. Very flavorful and plenty going on.

PALATE: Full body and medium carbonation. Lots of weight on the palate. Creamy and smooth, goes down smooth and finishes very sticky. No heat lingers. Full, thick and slick. Heavy. Excellent.

OVERALL: This was lovely. Lots of great aroma and flavor that shows a wonderful balance between the base stout and the sherry barrels, along with a menacing look and a massive feel. Love The Marshal and this incarnation turned out very nicely. Thanks again 7clutch. Top class stuff.
