Availability: Summer

Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: BigMcLargeHuge on 11-17-2008

This Russian Imperial Stout is dedicated to Georgy Zhukov, arguably one of the finest generals of World War II. Opaque black in color, with notes of espresso, chocolate, dark toffee and hints of backstrap molasses. The English hop varietals provide a subtle herbal dryness, and finishes with a hearty slap of roasty espresso. Pair Marshal Zhukov’s with Mushroom Solyanka, dark chocolate, cherries and ground wars in Russia.

We brew and release Zhukov's in the summer knowing that a beer of this heft reaches its full potential a few months after release. So save a bottle for the cold winter!

A bomber poured into 2 Cigar City snifters.

a: Black body. Thick like oil. One finger head. Brown like leather.

s: Roasted malt, molasses, baker's chocolate, faint coffee.

t: Roasted malts, dark chocolate, smoked molasses, espresso and hop spice finish.

mf: Full chewy body. Heavy with low carbonation.

o: All is OK when this beer warms. The raw ground espresso roast after taste is a bit much.

2012 vintage poured into a CCB snifter. Pours darker than a black hole. It sucks light out of it's surroundings. Super thick, almost black head. Smells rich, dark, complex, malty, smokey, chocolately, boozy, peaty, and even smoky. Taste is very complex, almost indescribable. So rich, 100 diferent levels of flavor and taste come through. Taste like a big ball of smoked cereal, covered in chocolate, rolled in dirt, smoked with peat moss. Everything about this brew is amazing. The label says it pairs well with ground wars, and after a full bottle I'm about ready tp start one just to find out. Very thick. If it was not labeled properly, I could mistake it for the leftovers of my last oil change. No discernable off flavors. Just pure, unadulterated Russian Stout here. And on National Stout Day to top it all off!

2013 bottle into teku. This beerpours a black oil with dark leathery head and smells so promising sweet but burnt hints of chocolate. The taste though is a big disappointment cloying sweet with a soy sauce flavor that over powers any other note I can get. Not sure if I aged this beer past it's prime?

Big and luscious. Soy Souce BOMB. Big fudge and roasty malts up front, but harsh and overly soy souced on the finish. Not appealing to keep sipping after each sip. My bottle was 3 months old. I'll give credit where it's due. My favorite Imperial Stouts are ones that have 2-3 years age on them (The Abyss & Stone IRS) and I don't like them at all when fresh. I'll be honest here, Marshal has everything I look for in a RIS when it comes to aging. I'll bet if this one had 2-3 years on it, I'd be singing a totally different tune & giving a much better score. Until that happens, the above score is where I stand.

A: Pours pitch black with a beefy two finger mocha colored head and some light lace down the glass with each sip.

S: Just a crapload of roasted malt, dark chocolate espresso beans and charred wood. Smells amazing. Faint cranberry, raisin and ash in here as well.

T: Tons of dark chocolate, espresso, dark chocolate covered cherry, molasses and charred wood. Faint hints of dark fruit peeking out from under the velvety dark chocolate. The mouthfeel is Barry White smooth. Just so good.

Pours almost completely black. Thick with not much foam.
Tastes well balanced with toasted malts and chocolate flavor
Has medium viscosity with just enough carbonation.

Bottle Date: 2013; Poured 9/2015

Pours motor oil black with a thin mocha head dissipating quickly to a tight collar. Spots of lacing garnish the glass with each sip. The nose is...massive; huge roasted malt, raisins, dark chocolate, espresso, molasses. The taste is as full and aggressive as a Siberian winter (I think...) featuring massive rich grain, dark chocolate, molasses, soy sauce, espresso with a little warm alcohol and some drying bittering hops on the finish. The mouthfeel is thick, creamy and almost oily with enough albeit low carbonation. A great RIS.

2012 bottle poured into a snifter

A: Pours dark dark brown, basically black, no light passes through, with a rich chocolate brown head that settles to a thin layer and laces lightly. Haven't seen a head that dark in a while.

S: Molasses and umami almost soy sauce like notes dominate, with faint roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, and dark fruit.

T: Molasses and dark sugar, roasted malt, espresso, dark chocolate, earthy, a little dark fruit, maybe a hint of smoke.

M: Full body, moderately low carbonation, smooth, alcohol is well hidden.

O: All the molasses-y goodness separates this one from most RISs I've had. Different, but very cool. Time has treated this one well.

Blackish brown in color. Very dark brown head poured half inch that quickly disappeared. Smell launches the molasses, espresso, and chocolate. Great taste. Toffee hits at front. I'm imagining it sticking in my teeth, but in a good way. Well balanced dry hops carries throughout but is well balanced with the malts. Not overly bitter. Espresso provides the finish. Very smooth with noticeable carbonation. All in all a great beer.

Pours a silky black color with a dark brown head, lingers for a short while then dissipates. Some lacing on the glass as it drinks down. Molasses, espresso, toffee on the nose. Bright molasses flavor at the front of the taste, finishes very clean with rich espresso. Mouthfeel is smooth, very light carbonation. This is excellent, really enjoyed it.

Very very good beer. Lots of flavor, complex and thick. Pours dark brown with big foam. Felt like a strong alcohol burn earlier but it mellowed into a very strong eventual smoothness. Smoky, syrupy, candylike, mouth filling, Lots going on with this, one of the best non-barrel aged imperial stouts I've ever had.

Well it's about time I had this beer. Had like 2 or 3 variants so far but never had the base beer; Zhukov.

Look is perfection. Straight up motor oil looking. My car wants this beer.

Smell is kind of sad. Nothing special at all. Typical Imperial

Taste is great. A bit of a lingering heat feel on the back end but overall a great beer. Very different beer and I think that is what sets this apart from other Imperials. You can tell it is very clean and well executed.

Feel is as good as most Imperials. There is however a lingering burn from the ABV which is what is holding this back.

Overall an amazing beer. Can't wait to pop open a bottle each month to see how the flavors develop.

Served in a cigar city snifter. I do not know what happened, but this beer did not smell good. However, the pour was jet black, and the feel was great. Tastes like chocolate and roasted malt. Really good veer but did not like the smell.

Very viscous as it pours with a jet black color. Has a nice aroma of chocolate with a sweet molasses hint. Tastes very much how it smells and how an imperial stout should taste. Feels very thick as you drink it, in a good way. Overall an excellent beer.

Typical CCB Stout.. In that it's great. Really sets standard on how a good stout should taste like. Never hesitate to pick this one up (or multiple where possible) of this you wont be disappointed.

This stout pours a perfect used motor oil black and very thick. The head was a dark caramel color that faded away quick. Could taste a smokey dark chocolate with a hint of some fruit.

Poured into a Dogfish traditional oversized snifter. 2014 Vintage, aged for one year.

A- Pours a fully opaque black color with a 1/4 inch medium brown head that retains a bit before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a half sheet of sheer surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves a thin ring behind.

S- Super roasty dark chocolate aroma with notes of vanilla, caramel, molasses and char. Also a considerable amount of booze smell. Also some dark fruit and port notes.

T- Big hit of char and dark chocolate with some smoky tones. Charry, nutty aftertaste with equal parts roasty/hoppy bitterness to contrast the sweetness of the residual sugars. Alcohol is very well concealed. Really good with the only flaw being a slight glassy taste.

M- Very creamy and chewy with medium-low carbonation and the fullest of bodies.

O- Why drink Huna when you can have a real stout? Big, bold and assertive yet smooth, refined and nuanced. Damn near everything you could ask for in a RIS.

22oz bottle into a brand snifter glass. Pours a deep dark mocha chocolate brown almost black with a thin layer of tan head that dissolved quickly leaving a trace of oily residue. You can smell the toffee and molasses in the nose. Going to be sweet. First sip is toffee, chcolate, molasses with a touch of high end espresso coffee. Sweet but overly sweet. To be honest, tastes a heck of a lot like The Answer Good Night Mekong. Maybe a little thicker but still not Surly Darkness thick. Similar to Hardywood Trickery or Brothers Resolute. Coffee is buried on the backend. No abv burn detected halfway through the glass. Cherries coming through now. Just slides down like a raw saghaw molasses. I could probably drop a biscuit on this. Super good stout.

Oozes out of the bottle. Almost no head. Thick, chewy, and brash. Chocolate, espresso, vanilla. This beer is great for a chilly night, but I wouldn't touch it in the summer unless I was sharing the bottle. Huge beer.

Perhaps the most opaque, motor oil pour I have ever seen. This tastes like liquid fudge. Flavor is a blend of bitter dark chocolate and espresso. Mouthfeel is motor oil thick, which was foreshadowed by the pour. A really good RIS.

The perfect example of a non barrel aged imperial stout. Pours oily black with a beautiful dark brown head. Taste is an explosion of roasty malts. Just enough hop presence to back it up. Everything about this beer is perfect for the style, even the name and label!

Appearance – The beer was jet black with only a few bubbles clinging to the sides of the glass.

Smell – The nose was dominated by dark chocolate and malts.

Taste – My initial impression is deep dark chocolate. There is almost a syrupy quality, but it is not too sweet. Burnt malts and a little spiciness are also included, which leads well into a dry chocolate after.

Mouthfeel – The stout clings to the tongue and mouth amid the assault on the taste buds.

Overall – Though not overly chocolatey, this is close to being a chocolate stout. I would certainly seek this one again.

One of the darkest beers I've had with dark brown head. Aroma is chocolate and dark fruits with some coffee bitterness. Chocolate comes through more on the taste along with coffee, molasses, and pipe tobacco. Dark fruits come through on the finish. It is very sweet but there's a lot of roast to balance it. Huge mouth feel. For a non-barrel aged stout with nothing added, this is tough to beat.
