2009 Vintage 750ml bottle with a white sticker on the top neck stating "Marshal Zhukovs Imperial Stout 2009" on it.

Appearance: Black as night with a super dark brown 2 finger crown that shows good retention and some lace.

Smell: Great subtle interplay of dark fruits and roast malt wrapped in a beefy blanket of cedar!

Taste: Same elements as the nose but with less refined integration. The cedar is so abundant it throws the flavor off in my opinion. I get cedar that tastes just like it smells at first, a small leather quality, then some booze, dark fruits, a bit of roast, a nice touch of hop bitterness, and then a fairly tannic finish. It's probably closer to a 4.25 so I'm rounding down a bit.

Mouthfeel: Thick side of medium bodied with ample carbonation that helps wash the lingering flavors of booze and cedar off of the tongue.

Overall: Make sure to let this one warm up to proper serving temperature to really enjoy the flavors. A great wood aged imperial stout for sure. The flavors are great and both the look and the smell are very impressive!

Thanks, Beerness!

Black and thick body with a moderately sized dark brown head. As usual, Cigar City makes another beautiful stout. Shiny, black, thick, heavy, viscous, oily--all words I'd use to describe this stout. Unfortunately, it's appearance was probably my favorite aspect of the beer.

Big notes of wood and smoke, as expected, and the base beer is largely lost because of it. There's also fairly large amounts of vegetable/tomato ketchup aroma, which isn't particularly pleasant. There's some strange sweetness and a bit of soy as well.

The flavor is just as bad, if not worse, than the aroma. Big notes of gourd vegetables, tomatoes, ketchup, wood, soy, and sweetness. A favorite beer of mine has been transformed into something not particularly drinkable.

Thick bodied with low-moderate carbonation. This beer does not fail the mouthfeel test.

I have largely hated the Humidor Series from Cigar City. This one is no exception.

A: Poured into my Founder's stout glass, this brew pours as wonderful as an Marshal Zhukov's. Pitch black with a milk chocolate head. Any brew based off of Marshal Zhukov is always the darkest, most fearsome stout I've ever seen. This version is leaving lace 360 degrees around the glass, that deserves a 5.0 in my book.

S: The first aroma that jumps up and grabs you is the cedar that truly makes this a humidor series. The usual Marshal notes of chocolate and molasses are hiding in the background, but come out to complement the cedar notes.

T: Fresh out of the fridge the cedar takes over, given time to warm notes of dark chocolate, fudge, and roasted caramelized malt shine through. The cedar leaves a very nice woody after taste.

MF: Smooth and creamy, carbonation is spot on for a beer of the caliber. It shows how much CCB has learned about carbonation over the few years they've been in business.

Overall, take a box of your favorite chocolates and serve them up in a cedar box. That is Humidor Marshal in a nutshell. Seriously, this brew means business and I'm glad I got a few to age.

750ml into a CCB Snifter. Bottle dated Sept 2011.

Pous thick and sludgy, just like Marshal Z. always does. Puts up a sexy dark brown head that leaves a little lacing on the glass as it falls. CCB's Imperial Stouts are among the best looking in the business.

Nose is outstanding. The spicy cedar is a fantastic companion for the earthy, leathery, tobacco notes typical of this beer. The cedar is in perfect balance right now, I'm probably wouldn't age this one much longer.

Taste is voluptuous. Dark fruits and earthen roasted malts - the wood leads to a drying finish that you don't usually get from the base beer. Roasted woods linger.

Mouthfeel is the strong point of this brew. Beyond full. Heavy. Creamy. I'd give it a 6 if I could.

Overall, this is a fantastic treatment of an already stellar stout. This beer was gifted to me by a fellow beer geek who will remain nameless. I owe him one.

On tap at Cigar City takes NYC event at Rattle 'N' Hum. The wood gives it a nice complexity and balance. The aroma is very chocolate. Big mouthfeel. Very dark brown. Coffee too. A nice one but not 100 percentile.
This is rather known as the humidor series, which uses cedar wood.

Final beer of hosted tasting on 5/19/2012

A - Pours black and as thick as motor oil. Coates the glass with a film and the brown foam laces the glass.

S - Smells of strong chocolate and brown sugar. The cedar gave this a bit of smoke that wasn't in Zukhov's.

T - Rich chocolate flavor and incredibly sweet. As the stout warmed the addition of spanish cedar added a smoky flavor that lingered so slightly.

M - A very rich stout, and could be a bit more mellowed on the finish.

O - I liked Zukhov's, I really liked Hunaphu, and this was right there as well. Of all the Humidor Series, this might be my favorite. Excellent brew from CCB.

Poured from tap into a Tulip glass.

Color: Black with a dark brown head.

Smell: Chocolate, coffee and cedar.

Taste: Chocolate coffee, alcohol, cedar and slighly smokey.

Mouthfeel: Creamy with good carbonation and pleasantly smooth.

Overall: Was able to enjoy this on-tap at Sweetwater Grill for the Cigar City tap takeover.
Has a great complexity to this one. The cedar and alcohol come thru very nicely. Cheers!

Bottle shared by illidurit at a tasting. Huge thanks to David for this one.

Pours jet black and viscous with a very dark brown head, about as dark as heads get.

Aroma is intense with lots of cedar, roast, and smoke, redwood forest, and coconut.

Flavor is absolutely insane, like nothing I've had before. It's almost like they liquified the taste of a great Cuban cigar and blended that with a very good imperial stout. Roasty and really cedary with burnt malts, cigar smoke, chocolate, black pepper, coconut, and tropical fruits. Really complex, really crazy, and really awesome. At first I thought it was a little weird, but it definitely grew on me.

Extremely long finish. Amazingly smooth and full on the mouthfeel yet having some harsh smoky bitterness.

Drinkability is only decent, but that doesn't really detract from how awesome this beer is overall.

On-tap at the "Aging Beers on Unusual Wood" presentation by Cigar City at Bx Beer Depot.

Appearance - Jet black with no head. Little brown bubbles around the edge. So black it stains the glass.

Smell - Sweet malts and some coffee aromas. Overwhelming sweetness. I honestly don't get a lot of cedar, unless it's hidden within the sugar and booze.

Taste - Strong chocolate malts. Hop bitter at the front, which is strange for an RIS. Strong sweetness in the middle with a cedar astringency in the finish. The cedar seems to add to the sweetness, too.

Mouthfeel - Thick as hell. Not a lot of carbonation, even on tap. It coats the mouth and makes the flavors linger.

Overall - I don't get a lot of direct cedar. It adds to the flavors subtly and unfortunately enhances the sweetness of the beer.

Poured on tap at cigar city brewery.
Poured a deep black with a one finger brown bubbly head that only lasted around 30 seconds.
Nice roasty/chocolate nose with hints of woodyness, defiantly some dark fruit.
Lots of cedar in the taste. These humidor beers really display more wood than most wood aged beers I've had, and the cedar is super interesting to boot. This one is pretty roasty with a bit of sweetness.
Mouthfeel is very smooth, sticky, slickly. Big body medium carbonation.
Overall a really nice stout the cedar may have been a tiny bit over powering but as a featured part of the brew it was presented nicely.
I will defiantly try this again and suggest it to others.

Tried this last Saturday from a cask release at Cigar City Brewing. Was very excited but I have to say that the cedar was so obnoxiously unbalanced and overwhelming that it ruined the Zhukov's base. Four folks in a row were cringing and turning red, while trying their best to find something positive to say about it (in futile effort really). I gave my glass away after a few swigs to a couple of folks sitting behind me, but not sure if they drank it either.

The surprising piece is that, while Cigar City looks to push the envelope with flavors and creativity (the fantastic Hunaphu, Zhukov's, Jai Alai IPA, etc), they seem to not have the courage to toss something out that tastes horrible. This brew needs to stay retired. I'll be sticking with the regular Zhukov's or looking around for a BA variant.

Big thanks goes out to my boy Jefe73 for sending me this one in a past trade! Shared this one with everyone at cmrillo’s 40 Beers* @ 40 Birthday Bash! Served from bottle into a Cigar City snifter. Poured pitch black with a minimal brown head that subsided to basically none quickly. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, roasted malt, cedar, dark chocolate, and spices. The flavor was of sweet malt, roasted malt, cedar, dark chocolate, spices, and sweet alcohol. It had a heavy feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a good brew. I really like the kiss of cedar on this one that the Humidor Series added on this one. The nice woodiness on this one made it seem like it was added in an uber-barrel, but left out some of the undertones you pick up on using barrels. A really well thoughout-out brew that I’m glad I got the chance to try.
