Snagged this little gem at an unassuming little liquor store in one of the innumerable unassuming strip plazas here in Florida. I was down here for a family trip and never got the chance to got to the brewery, frustrating as it is only about 20 minutes away, but at least I got a hold of a 6pk. of Jai Alai. Enough curious back story, here is what the beer tastes like to me.
Pours a darker hue than most other IPAs, bordering on a rich, honeyed gold, with plentiful pinpoint bubbles coalescing up to a fluffy, creamy head. Smells sharply herbal without much tropical fruit or citrus. Seems to follow the 'house hop' character of many of Cigar's brews. Note this is in no way a bad thing, but I have noticed a similar hop profile to many of their beers. There seems to be almost a hint of eucalyptus in the aroma. The flavor coincides with the nose and offers up a robust hop profile that leans heavily on the piney, earthy, herbal side as opposed to grapefruity, citrusy, fruity character of say, Lagunitas or Two Hearted. Different and no less delicious. There is also a well measured malt character lending balancing substance without over-stepping to sweetness. A long, lingering, drying bitterness wraps up the package nicely. A tasty surprise on my trip in the south. Cheers.
