Pours dark brown in color with a tan head with notes of caramel, toffee, chocolate and toasted bread. Flavors of caramel, toffee and chocolate notes open with interjecting notes of wood and herbal bitterness from English hop varietals then moving back into semi-sweet chocolate, caramel and toffee and is dried out in the finish with toasted malt notes that resemble roast peanuts.

750ml bottle. Poured into a snifter 11/9/2014.

A- Deep brown body. One finger offwhite head with little retention. Some lacing. Looks pretty much like a brown ale. [3.5]

S- Brown sugar, molasses, toffee, quite a few notes of oxidization- slight cardboard, dark fruit type oxidation which of course is not particularly overwhelming, but noticeable on the nose. On the sweeter side, there doesn't seem to be much of a chocolate or toasted malt presence. [3.25]

F- Toffee, molasses. That's pretty much about it. Seems subdued. From a double brown ale, I would expect some nuttiness and a more intense caramel flavour. These seem to have been aged out of this beer, unfortunately. Not much in way of earth or bitterness. Fairly malty and oxidized. [3]

M- Medium bodied, low in carbonation. Not much of depth to the finish, a bit watery and boring. [2.5]

O- Lesson of the night- don't age brown ales, not even the big ones. There isn't much left with this one, which I think was bottled in 2011. [2.5]

Final score: 2.92

Pours a deep brown with a tan head that leaves nice lacing. Aroma is rich and malty, with dark fruit notes. The taste is similar, with a delicious malty sweetness that really hides the 9% abv. A nice medium mouth feel with little carbonation. A really good imperial brown ale.
