A remarkably good pumpkin beer - really great balance. Liquefied pumpkin pie, vanilla creme, yam, cinnamon, nutmeg and other autumnal spices, nice touch of warmth from the booze, pie crust. I was very impressed by this one - wish I had access

A- hazy, orange in color. Pretty dark as you would expect pureed pumpkin to be.

S- smells of strong pumpkin, cinnamon, roasted nuts, and other winter spices I can't quite put my finger on

T- absolutely fantastic. pumpkin and spice through and through, but without being overly heavy for an imperial pumpkin ale. Truly the most reminiscent beer I have had to my grandmothers pumpkin pie

M- thick and coats your mouth, but not so much that you couldn't drink this on a warmer day

O- favorite pumpkin beer, and I have had many. Saw some people mixing it with Zhukov's the other night. interesting, but I love both just alone

First time I had this beer was on tap at Cigar City Brewing' s taproom.

A. Beer was slightly cloudy with thick creamy head.

S. First there was lots of malts and hops followed by pumpkin and spices. The combination was awesome.

T. First the hops smacks your taste buds followed by a nice spice pumpkin after taste.

M. Very smooth for a hippy beer and does not taste boozy for an 8.5% beer.

O. The best pumpkin ale I have ever tasted!

On tap at the brewery with JJ. What a cool spot.

A - Amber/Brown with an off white head.

S - Cinnamon, burnt sugar, toffee, and PUMPKIN.

T - Allspice, nutmeg, molasses, sugar, pumpkin, caramel, Damn this tasty. They have so many good beers on tap, Marshal Zhukov, Vanilla Brown Maduro, Jai Alai, and multiple other brewery only releases. I love pumpkin so tried this beer and I was not disappointed.

M - Smooth, Sweet but not overly so, well balances, light carbonation.

O - Fantastic pumpkin beer. Another hit from CC. Hardly taste the booze for the ABV. Another reason I love Cigar City. Beers like this make me wonder why there's not more love for pumpkin beers... but I suppose to each their own.

Reviewed from notes. Had on-tap at CCB tasting room. Poured into a snifter glass.

A: Brownish, orangish amber, hazy, with a one-finger off-white head that fairly quickly dissipates into a ring. Decent lacing. Nice looking beer.

S: Pumpkin, cinnamon, allspice, caramel malts. Unfortunately, I'm also getting a a little dry cardboard aroma here too.

T: Flavor follows the nose, which is pleasant at first - pumpkin, spiciness, nice round flavors. But, the flat cardboard flavor is there again in the finish.

M: Medium mouthfeel, nice carbonation, no alcohol presence to speak of. This is a sweeter brew but with a relatively dry hang.

O: This one is overall OK, but I deducted significant points for the off flavor. The only think I know to cause this would be oxidization, but I know that it's fresh, and one wouldn't think there would be high-temperature exposure between the brewery & the tasting room, as they're literally connected. Either way, this had promise but didn't deliver. I did buy a bottle, so if it is significantly different I will update this review.

It pours orange in color leaving very little head and tracing. Cinammon and nutmeg spices are prevelant in the smell. Very well balanced between sweetness and tart. Tastes like a liquified pumpkin pie with a slight alcohol aftertaste. For an 8%, the alcohol aftertaste isn't inappropriate or intruding. Nice warm feeling in the stomach! Try it!

On tap at Vine & Barley. Umm Pumpkin!!! This is why I love the fall and Cigar City. Its good to drink a beer, where I taste pumpkin and not a lot of spices. Now there are some spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla), but just enough to enhance the flavor of the pumpkin. There is nothing artificial about this beer. I can and will drink a lot of this beer. Great job, Joey and Wayne.

Pours an orange-amber with a off-white head that has decent retention.

Aroma: Pumpkin nose with malt taking a background role. Hints of spicing; certainly not overdone.

Promising aroma is not followed by good taste. There is a nice bit of pumpkin/squash flavor, but it is surrounded by a rather unpleasant earthy gourd flavor.

Medium body with moderate carbonation

On-tap at BA Hunahpu's release. Poured into a CCB Snifter.

Pours a nice copper-orange with a thin white head that settles to a slight haze and ring. Nice pumpkin aromas mixed with brown sugar and the usual Pumpkin Pie spices. Moderately sweet, the brown sugar/molasses character comes out nicely. Taste is similar to the nose, but with a very pronounced pumpkin flavor. This is probably the most "pumkin-y" Pumpkin Beer I've had in a while, it's definitely more pumpkin then spice. Mouthfeel is smooth, slightly creamy, with a touch-over-medium body and good carbonation. Overall one of my new favorite Pumpkin beers, love that you can really taste the pumpkin!

Arrives a dark amber/ light brown color. Clear and brigjt with a small, off-white head that dissipates to a ring rather quickly. Some light, scattered lacing.
Smell is faint with notes of malt, root beer and naught else.
Taste is malty with some slight pumpkin and hop notes as well as the same root beer-like spices. Balance is good but lacking in depth and complexity.
Full body, lightish effervescence. Slighty drying finish with a hatsh, almost peppery burn on the tip of the tongue. Nutmeg perhaps? Not up to the usual standards of CCB.

A-murky dark orange with a nice cream colored head. good lacing.

S-pumpkin with a spicy and tangy aspect to it. the spicyness isn't the typical autumn spices though. it reminds me more of belgian witbier. smells really tasty and unique, though faint. actually there are some autumn spices too...i don't know...this is complex.

T-wow this is going to be talked about for years to come. this is great. comes in with a great taste of pumpkin, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, and sweet potato! its a great taste with strong flavors. it goes in to a slight bitterness then ends with a long lasting after-taste of pumpkin, brown sugar, and sweet potato. this is amazing.

M-creamy low carbonation with a semi-dry finish

O-as far as pumpkin ales go, i've only ever liked pumpkin and pumpking. i've now added good gourd. in fact, this puts punkin to shame. its such a complex and balanced blend of great flavors.

On tap at the Blind Tiger 9/15

Pours a orangy brown color with a minimal egg-shell colored head that quickly disipates into a barely there cap. Typical for imperial pumpkins.

The aroma is of a solid bready malt. The pumpkin spices are light, with cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice making their presence known. There is also an odd spice that I wasn't able to put my finger on.

While the aroma was light, the pumpkin spice flavor was big. Big nutmeg and clove presence with cinnamon and nutmeg. There seemed to be some vanilla as well. Again there was a sweet spice that I couldn't quite get. There was an earthy quality to the brew and it finished with a tea like bitterness.

The feel was light to moderate with prickly carbonation. Sweet upfront but finishes lightly bitter and dry.

A good pumpkin ale, not great but surely didn't disappoint.

A - pours a radiant orange-amber hue capped with a pie-crust-colored head, lots of tan lace, very appropriate for this seasonal brew.

2011 Update: It does not smell like dial soap anymore, just nice pumpkin, spice and golden Belgian-style beer. Score goes from 2.5 to 3.5.

S - At first I really despise the nose. It seems like I am picking up an aroma of Dial soap. It is either after I have had a few sips, or once it has aired out for a couple minutes that it becomes palatable, and after that the nose is pretty good.

T - The taste is an obvious winner. Imperial Pumpkin seems to work fairly well as a style. Big pumpkin and sweet potato flavors are lightly spiced and decently hopped. It seems that there are more hops and more caramel malt in this brew than one would usually find. Has an intangible, yet distinct CCB taste.

M - Big and rich, well-carbonated.

D - Easy to put down a few. Not something easily said of many pumpkin beers.

The ever so controversial pumpkin ales. What to do with them? Had the "IPA" at the tasting room. Pumpkin ales are very up and down and are ususally very pricey. Well this guy was way up!. Poured a very nice fall brown color. With a medium density white head. For me CCB does the best job balancing beers flavors. This pumpkin was balnced in the hops, spice, and pumpkin flavors. My favorite pumpkin. Dont try to convince me otherwise.

Enjoyed on draft at Cigar City

A: Pours a nice clear brillant punkin' orange hue with a nice tall creamy head. The retention is very good with spotty lace noted.

S: In the aroma department this one is hard to beat, it is neck and neck with Southern Tier Pumpking here. Huge real pumpkin aromas with a wonderful mix of spices. There is a real buttery crust element in here as well that I have never picked up in another beer. Even after the beer was gone from the glass the aroma still wafted from the empty glass. This one smells better than those $20 candles the wife brings home.

T: The flavors are wonderful as well. Real pumpkin, a perfect mix of pie spices, and oooh that gooey butter I detected. The pumpkin stands out without the spice overpowering. This one is a perfect mix between the pumpkin beers of DogFish Head and Southern Tier. I will quickly become a favorite of the pumpkin beer lovers.

M: Medium in body, smooth and creamy.

D: I tasted this one when it was first finished and the booze could really be detected. Since it has aged a bit, the alcohol flavors have died and the pumpkin, spice, and buttery goodness have come together to create one wonderful brew.

750ml bottle share thanks to doppelbockulus
12/12/13 – Served in a Duvel tulip glass

A: Good Gourd pours a burnt sienna hue with some mild haziness to it. Definitely a deep caramel-orange color with a half finger of thick khaki whip over the top. Solid retention efforts with some soft dots and doodles of stick adhering to the glass.

S: Smells like pumpkin pie in a bottle!!! It is dead on spiced pumpkin fruit with some caramelized sugars. Exactly what I had hoped for. Has legitimate spice aromatics of cinnamon, clove, allspice, and nutmeg with a sort of persimmon cookie likeness. Amazing aroma overall really.

T: Tastes of pumpkin caramel spice. Like liquid pie filling with an expressive and well constructed spice flavor profile. Exotic almost with the pronounced cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and allspice combination. It is all there in good balance. Each delicately layered and not overbearing to the pumpkin fruit. Toasted grains, rich with a toffee sweetness. Again much like persimmon cookie or gingerbread to me. Hints of anise in there. The brew is mostly sweet but with just the right hit of hop bitterness at the end that acts as a counter balance. Mild earthy quality towards the finish and alcohol is completely masked. This beer is more so about the spices than the pumpkin really. Really great overall.

M: Very smooth and creamy mouth feel with a moderate body. Small amount of bitterness with a decent drying finish and relatively clean retreat.

D: Really well done and quite enjoyable. You get the pumpkin and the spice in great balance. I don’t have much experience with Pumpkin beers but this is what I imagine one should be like.

From 12/12/13 notes. Huge thanks to Nugganooch for sharing this one; I love pumpkin beers and tihs was a big Want of mine. 750ml bottle poured into my Cigar City tulip.

a - Pours a hazy reddish brown color with one inch of off white head and low carbonation evident. Lots of head retention and lacing on the glass.

s - Smells of pumpkin pie, cinnamon, nutmeg, pumpkin, toasted malts, bread, oats, cloves, gingerbread cookies, and sugar. Great nose, just like pumpkin pie.

t - Tastes of sweet pumpkin fillings, toasted malts, cinnamin, pumpkin, bread, oats, wheat, toasted malts, spice, nutmeg, cloves, and bready malts. Even better than the nose; I like it a lot.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation. Body is smooth and creamy, quite easy to drink. Doesn't feel 8.5% ABV.

o - Overall I liked this one a lot; while not my favorite pumpkin beer ever it is in the mix with the top ones out there for sure. Easy to drink and the taste was great, I think I like Schlafly's pumpkin ale the best, followed by Elysian The Great Pumpkin, this, Pumking, and Alewerks Pumpkin Ale all slightly under it. Well worth checking out if you like the style.

Pours a very hazy and very dark copper/burnt orange color that spears almost chestnut brown in the glass with dark orange edges and a two finger, off-white head that quickly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Sporadic streaks and spots of soapy lacing left behind.

Spicy, autumnal aroma with lots of sweet pumpkin along with tons of earthy, zesty spice. Smells like an aggressively spiced pumpkin pie puréed into a glass. Has a similar dessert-like quality as Pumking with more malt and complex spice profile and less sweetness. Hints of roasted pumpkin, pumpkin pie filling, nutmeg and vanilla along with clove, ginger, coriander, cinnamon, brown sugar and allspice. Sweet caramel malts underneath with hints of toffee, tobacco and leather. The spice profile is very musty, earthy and is a nice counter to the sweeter pumpkin pie characteristics. One of the better smelling pumpkin beers that I've had.

Full bodied for the style with a nice balance of pumpkin pie sweetness and earthy, zesty spice notes. Strong organic tasting pumpkin and pumpkin purée/pie filling up front with prominent nutmeg, vanilla, brown sugar and allspice countered by a more musty, rustic spice profile that has hints of peppery clove, ginger, cinnamon and cardamom. There's a nice malt backbone giving off more sweetness with hints of caramel, toffee, toast and biscuit. Slight boozy sweetness in the finish but there is no heat at all. Drinks incredibly well for 8.5%. In addition to the complexity, there is incredible balance. The spice presence is really strong taming the pumpkin pie/dessert sweetness and there's just enough sweet malt and pumpkin character preventing it from feeling overwhelmingly spicy. I can see how this could be a bit too much for some but I think it's a great take on the style. One of the better examples of what a pumpkin beer can be.

Poured from a 750 mL bottle into a snifter. Enjoyed on Thanksgiving.

Appearance: Pours a medium brown with a reddish hue and leaves a finger of off-white head which slowly fades to a layer atop the beer.

Smell: Cinnamon, nutmeg, mild pumpkin. The spices are incredible and come through really well in the aroma. Mouth-watering.

Taste: Light pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, some malts. Decent amount of sweetness. Really tasty.

Mouth-feel: Nice medium body and medium carbonation. Fits the flavor profile very well. A bit sweet and sticky, but not too much.

Overall: I think this might be the perfect pumpkin beer (for me at least). Delicious spices, the right amount of "pumpkinness", right amount of sweet - just really delicious. This was a great beer to enjoy on Thanksgiving. See you again next year, Good Gourd.

750mL bottle from Luekens (Oldsmar, FL). 11.99. Bottled 8/26/13. Served in a Cigar City snifter.

Pours a deep, clear orange ruby with a quarter finger pale head. The head dissipates quickly leaving little lace.

Smells of ripe pumpkin, clove, nutmeg and sweet dough. Rather inviting.

Taste follows the nose but sweeter with considerably more spice. Pumpkin pie, cinnamon rolls, clove, allspice, burnt caramel, nutmeg and a mild touch of alcohol. The spices are bold and forward without ever covering up the nice, authentic notes of gourd. Delcious.

Semi sticky medium full feel with mild carbonation. Slick spiced pumpkin pie finish.

I might have a new favorite pumpkin beer here. Rich, sweet, smooth and utterly drinkable- it's certainly not often that I go through a 750 so quickly and easily on my own. This is one definately worth seeking. I can't wait to try Almighty!

Stopped by a grocery store on my way to the Cigar City taproom, and found this! Tasted 2 October 2013.

Pour is weird. The first one looked totally flat, with 0 head, and was murky. The second pour yielded 1 finger of head, and was mostly clear. Strange. Wonder if that was a temperature issue? Regardless of cause, my review is on the second pour. Color is a rusty orange. Okay retention, not much lacing.

Smell is full of pumpkin and spices. It's sweet and bready, and reminds me of a spiced pumpkin muffin! Really nice, though it's shading towards overdoing it.

Taste is a lot like the smell: heavy on the pumpkin, and jam-packed with spices, with a topping of sugar. Seriously, this is probably the most spiced-up pumpkin beer I've had, and it's an amalgam of so many that I can't pick out any one, though I suspect cloves and cinnamon are in there. Very nice. Main complaint is that there's just too much going on, and the pieces don't all work together so well.

Feel was like the appearance. My first pour was totally flat, and I had to swish it around to even get any bubbles to come out. But that may have been temperature. After letting it sit, it acquired some life, though the carbonation was still lower than I'd like. Medium-bodied and sticky.

A very solid, if slightly overdone, pumpkin beer.

got to be the smoothest pumpkin beer ever. been mellowing for a year now. bronze and lazy in looks, but angry and temperamental and impatient in taste. so much here, all orange and frothy. nose of gourd, its true, cinnamon, clove, ginger, turmeric, and all kinds of liquor. smooth and comfortably spiced, this is a beer of sharing proportions. vanilla, brown sugar, and cardamom. so much going on here, but so little comprehension for me as I sip away, tasting something new each time. barrel and attitude percolate heavy, as does a soft sort of pokey vibe. spice is robust, yet I am as mellow as anything. delicate feel, needs more oomph overall, but this is special stuff. the name gourd makes me want more gourds, its reciprocal in that way, special yet understated. impress me it does, perfect it is not...
