Pours a glowing deep amber hue, glowing edges with some sunfire, well hazed with a frothy off white head that laces ok, a decent sized ring. Aromas are crisp toast and caramel, vanilla and toffee, biscuits, and pumpkin puree, a bit sweeter with decent pie spice. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and more vanilla, caramel. Some crispness. Initial is medium bodied offering a touch more sweetness, vanilla and caramel blast, toffee and toast, gentle spice moves in, with cinnamon and brown sugar, toffee and biscuits. More pie spices and pumpkin puree, sweeter with caramelized malts, touches of sweetness dance, with just a hint of dryness. Fairly balanced for a sweeter beer, spice and vanilla, sweet malts. Finish is nice, gentle spice and sweetness linger. It’s not complex, but it’s tasty, sweet slanted without being anywhere near cloying. Fairly balanced. Very nice.

Good Gourde! Another Pumpkin Ale to grace our shelves, cellars and palates for the ground-gaining fall season. So what sets this guy apart? Its the way it sells not the pumpkin, but the pumpkin pie in all its glory. And it does so consistently and boldly from start to finish.

Burnish-orange in color, the connection to the pumpkin begins in the beer's look. Its haze causes the hue to take on a dark caramel and rust appearance. Topped with a creamy froth, its head is creamy, seemingly of whipped cream. Its like I just took a cross section of pumpkin pie.

Savory aromas are sweet, starchy, and crusty. Sweet grains are both of caramel and "Grape Nuts" for a nutty-sweet scent. A marshmallow-type type of heavy cream presence folds into the spiciness that turns up next. Rather than lead by cinnamon, its the nutmeg and clove that gives a hearty-soft spiciness and then the sharpness of cinnamon to give final impressions, before that first sip.

Its three-headed attack is first of caramel with a hearty backbone of biscuit for a taste that comes together as much like pumpkin pie desserts as beer can get. Its praline-type sweetness is rich, caramelly, and with creamy corn syrup. But the cream and pumpkin flavor of blends with a taste of heavy whipping cream for a pumpkin "fluff" flavor. Again, the spices are paramount, but merely balance the sweetness with soft clove, nutmeg and spicier cinnamon. But there's more- the crusty, toasted barley flavors allow the beer to take on a graham cracker dry breadiness and a toasted hazelnut taste for a savory taste that's not easily quantified.

Medium-full in its body, the ale doesn't shy away from its richer character. Instead of trying to become beer, it tries to become pumpkin pie and it is very good at it. Its deep savory and sweet interplay extends well into finish with spicy rum-like warmth and a slight pang of spice-derived astringency to supplant hops. Without promoting dryness or drinkability, the ale instead promotes another sip!

I love when asked what this beer will likely pair well with, as they likely expect desserts like pumpkin pie. I enjoy explaining that it doesn't pair with dessert, it replaces the dessert!
