Thanks to DosBeerigos for the trade on this one. Poured into a snifter, this brew appears a hazed amber color with a white head that fades to just a thin film that holds around the edge of the glass. A light swirl revives a finger of yellowish cream that again slowly fades down to a thin lacing. Some spots of lace cling to the glass.

The smell of this brew is earthy and spiced. A touch of green pumpkin character mixes with yeast and some fruity alcohol hints. Cloves are present along with cinnamon and an earthy indication of nutmeg and hops. More smells reveal a residual sweetness to the nose that is caught between a caramel malt and toffee character. The fruity inclusion is a bit perplexing and distracts a bit from the overall theme of pumpkin/earth character.

The taste is sweet toffee/caramel with a contrasting bitterness of herbal hops and a spice of earthy nutmeg. Some spices are evident with a flavor of cinnamon and clove. A fruity backing is evident that starts to move focus on the the alcohol aspect of this brew. The aftertaste is quite earthy with nutmeg and spices expected of the pumpkin offering. Once the brew goes beyond ideal temperature, there is a bit of a molasses to gram cracker type of malty inclusion which is interesting.

This is a medium bodied brew that is quite creamy with a light level of carbonation. There are lots of fruity alcohol notes and a solid balance of modest spices that keep everything in check. For an 8.5% offering, the alcohol is well integrated. Overall this is a solid take on the style, not the best I have had bu tone that is worth trying at least once... or twice.

Bottle shared by Chaney. Thank you Brandon.

The beer is copper to amber hued with a quarter inch of off white head. Crimson highlights in the body. The aroma brings cinnamon, pumpkin pie, pie filling, sugar, while cream. Sweet and spicy with a smooth malty body. A touch of alcohol warmth in the finish. Really solid. Splitting the bottle a few ways is probably best.

750ml bottle shared at a recent tasting. It poured a darker, amber orange color with a thin, sticky white head clinging to the edges of the glass. Nice color to it.

The aroma shows cinnamon, nutmeg and canned pumpkin. A malty sweetness helps cut through the spices smoothing it out. Nice aroma for the style.

The taste shows more of the cinnamon and nutmeg spices up front while more of the canned pumpkin flavors come out in the finish. A malty sweetness balances out all the spices in the finish very nicely.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied with carbonation being moderate. Overall I thought it was a fantastic pumpkin beer. The spices weren't overdone and the sweetness definitely helped smooth them out even more. Very nice pumpkin pie like flavor to it overall. Definitely one of the best pumpkin beers I've had, but it doesn't quite beat out Pumking for me.

Pours an orange-amber with a off-white head that has decent retention.

Aroma: Pumpkin nose with malt taking a background role. Hints of spicing; certainly not overdone.

Promising aroma is not followed by good taste. There is a nice bit of pumpkin/squash flavor, but it is surrounded by a rather unpleasant earthy gourd flavor.

Medium body with moderate carbonation

A remarkably good pumpkin beer - really great balance. Liquefied pumpkin pie, vanilla creme, yam, cinnamon, nutmeg and other autumnal spices, nice touch of warmth from the booze, pie crust. I was very impressed by this one - wish I had access

750 ml capped bottle poured into a snifter
8.5% ABV,

A - Completely clouded, this deep chestnut brown beer has beautiful pumpkin orange highlights and maintains it's thick ivory head wonderfully, leaving dots of lace around the snifter.

S - Good Gourd smells familiar but has an aroma unlike any other pumpkin beer. This hefty brew incorporates enough pumpkin to make you think you poked your head inside one after you gutted old Jack. The spice, while smelling somewhat typical, has a fantastic twist; nutmeg is in the presence of Ceylon cinnamon, Jamaican allspice, and Zanzibar cloves for a blend that sure to raise an eyebrow. And let's not forget the smooth and sweet caramel and toffee base. Absolutely wonderful.

T - How much difference does spice from another region make, you ask? Good Gourd is clearly similar to other pumpkin beers in many regards but the one thing that, from the first sip, immediately sets this beer apart is it's use of unique spices giving it incredible distinction. Beyond the spices, wonderful roasted pumpkin and sweet, sweet malt beef up the beer with sticky melted caramel pumpkin seed flavor.

M - Good Gourd is a hefty beer boasting 8.5% ABV but it's hidden very well behind a rich, full body and sweet maltiness that's balanced exceptionally by wonderful spice. This filling, pie-like beer is equally as smooth as a slice for a luscious and enjoyable sipping experience.

O - In a sea of pumpkin beers released all too early, Good Gourd stands head and shoulders above the crowd, with a wonderful familiarity like that pie your aunt always brings to Thanksgiving, but this time it's tweaked. Cigar City's use of intercontinental spice gives Good Gourd a truly one-of-a-kind aroma and flavor. If you can get it, make this the one must-try pumpkin beer of the season.

750 mL bottle poured into a goblet.

Appearance - Slightly hazy deep amber body. Not as dark as other pumpkin ales. A nice healthy head also distinguishes it from other pumpkins. And finally, it's got lacing! It looks like a real beer.

Smell - A great balance of pumpkin and spices. It's not dominated by spices, but they complement the pumpkin nicely. Nutmeg especially, I think.

Taste - Good pumpkin flavor up front, but the spices are less involved. The pumpkin flavor seems to fade and come back in the end. Maybe even a bit of earthiness with it at the end and possibly some bitterness.

Mouthfeel - Thick, but not as creamy as I'd like. I imagine a perfect pumpkin ale like drinking a pumpkin pie and it comes close, but just not quite creamy enough. Are my standards too high?

Overall - The best pumpkin ale I've had to date, but not perfect. The smell is wonderful but the taste is not quite as good.

From 750mL bottle to tasting glass at a NoVA Beer Tasting on 10/23/11
*From notes

-- Thanks to my CCB pipeline (aka UMCaner74) for the hook-up --

A: Cloudy orangey resin. A generous pour yields a .75 finger head. Minimal retention and lacing, though I'll be damned if this isn't a gorgeous beer.

S: Creamy pumpkin, well balanced spice, graham cracker and just a touch of yeast.

T: Creamy and pumpkiny and spicy. This is easily one of the more flavorful pumpkin beers I've encountered. Everything here meshes well, and it's really approachable for anyone, including non-pumpkin fans.

M: I contend that CCB is the one of the top two or three mouthfeel kings in the business. Having said that, this feels nice, but it's not quite up to the monumental standards set by the higher ends of their portfolio. Regardless, it's well carbonated and properly layered.

O: CCB's Good Gourd is one of the best pumpkin beers around. If readily available in my market, this would be a constant in my fridge during the crisp, cool autumn days. Easily recommended, and absolutely worth seeking out for the pumpkin beer aficionado and general beer advocate alike.

A - Fairly orange colored beer with a little bit of brown on the edges. Moderate head that left some decent lace and spots on the sides.

S - Has some nice pumpkin notes with some cinnamon and nutmeg. Not a whole lot else to say, but pretty solid.

T - This is actually pretty nice. Some good pumpkin flavor with nice spice and caramel. Very smooth tasting with a bit of brown sugar.

M - Pretty nice carbonation, velvety, full bodied.

O - A nice beer for a pumpkin beer. Good flavor, not cloying. Would drink this occassionally without a problem.
