A truly impressive brew. Thanks, Mikesgroove, for this one.
Inky black with a gorgeous, creamy, coffee colored head which sticks and stays. Impressions of cherry (from the cinnamon and chocolate notes) and oak (from the vanilla and pepper tannins) blossom, the warm spice of the cinnamon and vanilla coming through most in the end. The body is as lush, soft, and full as any I've ever found, the beer hampered only by a ragged, lengthy, puckering bitterness. The roasted grains, aggressive hopping, and adjuncts add up to an overly bitter brew, even for my tastes. Despite this somewhat harsh and unpleasant finish, the lush body and intriguing complexities make this a superior brew. Hopefully they tone down the roasted barley and hops a touch to bring it fully into balance. A great beer just shy of transcendent.
