Bottle split with friends for review #250. This was traded to me by a very generous BA who knows who he is - thanks!! If I've learned one thing from reviewing the last half a year, it's that beer is meant to be shared and enjoyed. In that spirit, we opened this one at room temp and poured into some open mouth glasses, each enjoying about 8oz.

But, I ponder as the beer sits infront of me...although I want to believe, the cynic in me wonders if this can deliver. A month of strong reviews from some very reputable tickers pushed this into the top 10. But can it really hang with such legendary beers as KBS and the Abyss?

From the pour, it looks promising. This looks less like beer and more like motor oil from Motorhead's motorcycle. Even the head on this beer is dark. Wow. If I wasn't so psyched to try this special treat I would have it framed, it's a work of art.

But wait. There's quickly a potential weakness in the defenses, a chink in the Hunahpu's armor. The smell doesn't groove with me. Something just isn't right here - yes, there's an amazingly deep dark chocolate and nice roast, but there's also some tin. Not just some yeasty impressions, my beer smells like it was luged over a rusty sheet of metal. Is it just in my head (nose) or with it also taste this way? There are intricate notes of vanilla, chocolate, and cinnamon, but the tin is killing me.

Well, as it should be, the taste will be the deciding factor. And it delivers. The tin is gone. Thank the lawrd! In it's place is some of the most devine liquid I've ever had. A huge amount of chocolate and vanilla provide the base for such a deep, complex, and well crafted beer. The peppers are there, but they fade as the beer opens up. The cinnamon emerges and totally works. This is NOT a dessert beer, it's just a myriad of flavors all grooving together. The roast is devine, the way this one evolves between sips is splendid, and the taste is just perfect. A wonderful example of American brewing.

Mouthfeel is also perfect. Like drinking chocolate velvet. Wow, can't even think of a flaw here, this is the easiest 5 I've ever given.

Drinkability suffered since this is one to savor not burn through. But I must say on my 250th review, this is one of the best beers yet. Totally deserving of the hype, which kind-of makes it not hype, right? For anyone wondering, this beer has more in common with Chuck D than Flavor Flav...soul on a roll. I hoist my glass to the next 250 and look forward to sharing more great beer with great friends. That is, of course, what life as a Beer Advocate is all about.

Chilies have faded and I get no heat. I also get no heat from the alcohol.

Had a significant dark fruit characteristic which faded as it warmed. It tastes like french toast sticks dipped in chocolate and coffee. The aftertaste is a pleasant roasty note.

Mounthfeel is incredibly huge rivaled only by room temp dark lord

This beer is incredible

Just attended the festival this past weekend and it was worth the hype. I had the opportunity to try a 2011 at the event and most everyone I spoke with said that this years batch is just phenomenal. The beer is darker than anything I have ever had before and the subtle notes of chili are apparent along with the dark coffee taste. I am extremely thankful that I brought enough home with me to enjoy one every couple of months.

Pours thick, like used motor oil, with a temporary dark brown head.

The aroma is layered and complex without any one component overriding another. Rich roasty chocolate, ash, soft vanilla, charcoal, and spice all blend together nicely. It's actually a little hard to describe.

The taste is smoky with dark cherry, plum, chocolate and coffee, with a little sweetness mid-palate and the spice from the chiles comes in late and hits the sides of the mouth.

Slight viscosity and low carbonation work well in this stouts case. I think it would be weird if it were creamier or heavily carbonated.

Very nice, possibly a tad overrated, but worth a try for any beer nerd.

A - Pours black with a finger of dark tan head that fades into a thin ring with no lacing.

S - Incredibly complex, there is a ton of chocolate, caramel, chili peppers, cinnamon, molasses and brown sugar. A lot of coffee in here as well. Smells massively sweet and rich.

T - Complex taste, lots of chocolate all over this one and the slight burn from the chili is somewhat rather satisfying was very surprised. Taste is great.

M - Nice smooth creamy thick feel with low carbonation. Sticky sweet coating on the tongue. Outstanding

O - The best non-barrel aged stout in the world. I could drink this all day. What a genius move to use chili peppers in a chocolaty rich stout. Wish I had another bottle.

Good god this beer was delicious. Drank at a perfect cellar temperature, the vanilla comes right out and smacks you in the nose. The smell is sweet like a chili infused milkshake (hmmmm) and i have to say, this beer was about as viscous as a milkshake too.

The only thing that made it tough to knock down was that it was still a bit hot. Not that it was unexpected but it definitely made it a little less drinkable. I worked on my bottle over 3 days... I hope to try this beer with even a little bit of age on it... i think it will be unbelievable...
