Cheers, pwoods. Thanks for sharing this bottle with me.
The beer pours exceptionally dark brown, practically black. It is fully opaque, and it's so dark that the head is even dark - a deep chocolate milk brown with a ruby tinge. It starts as a tight, 1/2 finger skim, and it fades to a light ring around the walls of the glass, leaving slippery lace sliding down back into the liquid quickly. The receding lace reveals a wash of alcohol in its wake.
The first hit is a whiff of cherry Robitussin. It fades softly into a nice blend of dry, crunchy, roasty coffee and warm, sweet vanilla bean.
Forward flavors of roasted coffee and cacao dominate across the palate. It takes some warming and repeat sips to start revealing the other flavors in this bold beer. I definitely get the sweetness of the vanilla, but the chiles don't come across as anything much more than an aftertaste. There's a persistent cherry-like sweet-tartness. The feel overall is really nice. The carbonation is strong enough to really distribute the flavors, and it finishes with a great, chewy creaminess, leaving a sticky palate-coating film behind.
Moderately drinkable at best. A tasty style with a twist.
