Reviewed from notes. 2010 edition, poured from bomber into a snifter.
A: Pours black and opaque. Small, dark tan head. No visible carbonation.
S: Coffee, spicy aroma. Has overtones of soy sauce, although this fades as the beer warms and vanilla aroma begins to be present.
T: The complexity of this beer is amazing. Chocolate/cacao, coffee, soy sauce, molasses. More dried chili flavor than I remember on tap. Following the aroma, the soy sauce fades & vanilla comes through as the beer warms up some.
M: Smooth, thick mouthfeel, not much carbonation. Sweet finish/molasses flavor with chocolate aftertaste. Moderate alcohol presence.
O: I really like this beer and I think, love it or not, everyone owes it to themselves to try it. I've had it several times on tap (both the '11 & '12 version) but this is the first 2010 I've had, and the first bottle I've had. There was more chili flavor here than I recall from previous and the "soy sauce" aroma & flavor was new. Unfortunately, I don't have any way to know whether those were the production batch or the result of aging. Perhaps I'll open the '12 bottle in 2014 & compare.
