2012 vintage. Pours very dark with a small chocolate covered head.
Smells strong and very smooth. The aroma is, first and foremost, that of very darkly roasted stout malt--no need for aggressive nodes of bourbon or bacon or Merlot or whatever other crap is currently in fashion. After a few more sniffs, some subtle nodes of cocoa, coffee, and all spice. Not the most variegated of aromas, but the striking smoothness makes up for any lack of excessive complexity.
Tastes like it smells--very smooth, medium complex, and nicely strong throughout. Burnt barley moves into coffee and chocolate, ending on pie spice with a small hint of capsicum that gives the back end a lightly fruit, lightly sweet feel and balances things together quite nicely. Practically no alcohol burn is present.
An excellent RIS, easily on a par with Dark Lord and Darkness, better than Parabola, but not quite as good as Bomb! or the Abyss.
