On tap at Cigar City

This beer is the standard Marshal Zhukov's Imperial Stout kicked up a bit. Some chili were added along with a bit of vanilla and cocoa nibs.

A: Like all Cigar City stout's this one is evil looking in the glass. As dark as night with a huge creamy brownish black head. The beer clings to the glass as if it is laced with oil. The head hangs around nice, and leaves big chunks of that dark brown goodness.

S: To say the aromas are bold would be an understatement. Huge charred malt aromas with strong notes of bitter chocolate. Light hints of roasted chili's can be detected as well. The vanilla hides beneath all these bold aromas along with a bit of dark fruit and tobacco.

T: The roasted malt is the first thing you detect here. Coffee come next along wtih a blast of bitter chocolate and tobacco. A touch of vanilla can be picked up and then the chilis create a touch of warmth on the back of the tongue. Very complex and very unique.

M: Very full bodied, smooth, creamy with the chili's creating a real depth.

D: Not as drinkable as some of the other Cigar City stouts, but it sure is tasty. A one of a kind treat.

Aroma: So much going on here... dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla, cinnamon, a little bitter dark fruit. Easily a beer that I could sit there and smell for hours and remain content

Appearance: Pours like motor oil, the darkest of dark liquids... even while the beer is being poured the beer does not relenquish its hold on any light that may pass through it... opaque

Taste: As complex as the nose... every sip lends a different element of the beer, all of which are exceptional and are a pleasure in themselves... one sip is more vanilla forward, the next cinnamon and the next you finally get the heat from the chillies... I even get some milk chocolate, must be the vanilla and chocolate malt/cocoa nibs shinning together, you don't know whats coming but whatever it is will be delicious

Mouthfeel: The thickest beer I have consumed, coats every inch of your mouth... definitely a sipper but each sip is bliss, the alcohol may slow you down somewhat but thats not a bad thing

Overall: The best stout I have had... ever. I love barrel aged stouts but this beer gives me the vanilla I love from barrel aging, the roasted malt and dark chocolate from imperial stouts, as well as a little kick from the chillies for a little something different and is almost like a new experience with every sip... Awesome!

2014 bottle poured into a snifter. After much hype surrounding this beer, I was super excited to try this! It pours jet black and almost looks like motor oil. Very little head when poured into the snifter. The smell is somewhat sweet with aromas of vanilla, cinnamon and chilies. For a flavored stout, you get the sweet taste to start and finishes with cocoa and vanilla flavors, as well as some heat from the chilies. The mouthfeel is extremely smooth. Overall, this is a complex beer but super delicious; one to savor for sure! In my opinion, this one lives up to the hype, cheers!

Served at Redlight Redlight in Orlando, FL. The owner had it on C02 and decided to experiment with it and put it on nitro, WOW!!!! So he kept it that way.

A-Dark as night with a beautiful two finger creamy brown head. It reminded me of chocolate mousse.

S-Chocolate right off the top with hints of coffee, ancho chilies, and spices.

T-Dark chocolate, followed by spices and alittle vanilla. Finished slightly warm from the ancho chillies.

M-Very nice, creamy. The nitro put a nice feel to it. Felt sliky and velvety.

D-Fantabulous!!! Very smooth and warm. One of the best Imperial Stouts I have ever had. Cigar City is surprising me everytime I have one of their exceptional beers. Keep it up!!!

Pours a 1 finger thick beautiful mocha head dissipates to form a solid ring around my ccb snifter and stays throughout the drink. It has an aroma of strong dark chocolate with coffee in the background. It tastes of chocolate up front, coffee and vanilla notes with a finishing burn from the alcohol then from the peppers. This beer is so complex I am tasting something different each time I try it. Hunahpus is the greatest beer I've ever had, so complex and so delicious!

A: Poured a sluggish near pitch black with a huge brown cap, loads of lacing, amazing!

S: Big fresh cocoa, like hot chocolate, some spice, heat, wood, coffee and wow it smells so good

T: A rich cocoa presence here, dark and light chocolate, roasted malt, booze, cinnamon and light spice from the peppers. Big sweetness with some roasted marshmellows and vanilla. Extremely decadent and flavorful. Among the best of not the best Imperial Stout I have ever had.

M: Where do I begin? Big, rich and sweet. Big body, well carbonated, loads of taste!

Thanks to my buddy robin for this one!!!! Poured in a goose island tulip.

Appearance - poured motor oil black and thick as a milkcomplement each otherth a deep robust chocolate mocha head.

Smell- right of the bat I get mexican chocolate ( bitter sweet dark chocolate with notes of spicy chillies) followed by a subdued sweetness. The aroma of this beer is fantastic and complex.

Taste- wow! Strong presence of roasted malt and bitter chocolate. The spice from the chillies is mild and not over powering they complement each other nicely. Finishes slightly dry.

Mouthfeel - Thick slick and chewy!!

Overall- phenomenal stout!!! Must try for stout lovers. Once agian cigar city has brewed one of the best imperial stouts made!!!

Let me start off by saying the night I drank this beer, it was the most amazing beer tasting night of my life. We (urwithdave and gtreid) started off the night by drinking a Kate The Great, followed by the Hunahpu, then a Darkness, a KBS and a Darklord, holy stout. But I am reveiwing the Hunahpu. What an amazing beer, the pour was jet black with the head a red in color, almost evil looking. Smell was malty, with coffee, cocoa and a faint smell of the peppers. You taste chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon followed by a subtle bite of the peppers. Very thick almost like you could eat it. I could easily drink this beer every day, if my pocketbook would allow it.

An amazing beer.

A: Awesome black with huge lacing and dark brown head!

S: Amazing. Oh wow, the charred malt base mizes so well with sweet and savory notes of chile, caramel, cinnamon, cocoa, vanilla bean and dark dried fruits. So awesome holy cow.

T: Follows the smell with big burnt malt notes, hickory BBQ, cocoa, chile spice, vanilla bean, cinnamon bun, and fudge. Again, wicked roasty. Sweet man not too sweet, savory as well. Outstanding, theres hardly the words to describe.

M: Nice feel, smooth as all get out and completely coating, everything a big stout should be.

D: OUSTANDING beer, man it's incredibly easy to put back being so big. Ever time I get to try this, I am consistently blown away.

My favorite beer overall. And that's after having Julius, Mexican Cake, Good Morning, and other top rated beers. The mouthfeel on this thing is what separates it from the rest. The complexity is off the chain. Each sip is different.

Sharing with my wife poured into a snifter

A: by far the darkest stout I have ever poured with great dark brown head just a great looking beer.

S: it has a great roasted smell that pulls chocolate and vanilla also smells like a great cup of coffee.

T: with the first taste it has 3 or 4 flavors that seem to come at me at different times which makes that much better and complex and I don't really taste the alcohol even though it is a big boy in the ABV section

M: this Imperial stout has good mouthfeel with good carbonation and the taste just stands out and lingers great flavor

D: By far the best Imperial Stout I have ever come across and if it wasn't so expensive and hard to come by I would love to drink one after work with some buddies or my wife because it is that good.

The Hype is Real and if you get a chance at one of these take it because I know they are out at CCB

Reviewed on 2/18/2010, updated 4/10/2010. Growler from Big Z Beverage. Pours black with a small but long-lasting dark tan/reddish head. Super pretty head. Aroma of bitter chocolate, lots of cocoa, tons of graham cracker (including some cinnamon), roasted malt, toffee, vanilla, oak. Flavor is quite chocolatey up front with a definite peppery spice note and a chalky, chocolatey finish. Graham cracker still present but less so. As I continue to drink, the pepper/chile spiciness really starts to heat up my mouth. This is one of the most chocolatey beers I've ever had. One of the most unique and well crafted imperial stouts out there. I'm proud to award this beer my first ever 5.0.

My second re-rate: After having this again, I had to make it a perfect 5. This beer is outrageous.

Thanks to Joey for the taste. I would rate this higher than a 10 on flavor, if I could. The chocolate flavor in this beer is over the top delicious. It is strong, creamy and decadent with vanilla and cinnamon spices added in. The peppers are sitting in the back, providing just a slight burn to let you know they are there. The mouthfeel is thick and oily. Swirling the beer around the glass leaves a light brown oil slick on the sides. I simply cannot wait until this hits the market. The chocolate flavor is a desert of its own. Fabulous flavor. Great job!
RE-RATE: After the Cigar City Kickoff party, I had to bump my rate even higher. This beer is amazing. Was told the ABV was kicked up higher, to the 13%-14% range, but it doesn't show. The flavors seem even more intense and the alcohol is hidden very well. The chocolate in this beer tastes like the best gourmet chocolate I've ever had in a beer. No corners have been cut. If I could drink on thing for the rest of my life, it would be this.

Bottle from March, 2014. Look: Appearance is black with a small tan head. Smell: There is a lot going on here on the nose. I get a lot of cinnamon, some vanilla and peppers. Taste: This is a flavor explosion of the best kind. In addition to the cinnamon and vanilla the spiciness of the peppers really stands out. Feel: Carbonation is fairly normal for having almost a year of age. Overall: This is one of the best stouts I've ever had. It's incredibly balanced and everything an Imperial Stout should be. Well done, Tampa!

Been savin this bad boy since the first week it came out. Opened today 10/26/10. Poured this into my favorite Westmalle chalice. The bottle poured out a thick creamy consistent black brew with a light choclate head that lingered for a few minutes. I could smell the beer as it sat in my glass, awaking itself from its hibernation. The smell was of the best chocolate you have smelled in your enitre life, but! it was balanced with some bright bitterness and spice like none other. The flavor was tantilizing. My mouth salavated after the first sip. I went right back in for a second. Beer porn at its finest. The flavor was of chocolate molten lava cake with spices and heat from the ancho chilis. I was in heaven. ITs too bad they didn't brew more of this. This is easily the best beer on the market, and it would be the #1 rated beer on BA too. My suggestions, drop black tuesday and come down to Florida for the release of this champion.

Really enjoyed this.

Poured thick, black, oily, very little head. Great aroma, subtle chile spice. First sips while still cold were all chocolate. As it warmed up a lot more complexity came through, no heat but some chile flavor, not much cinnamon, just good balance.

Easy to see why this was so highly rated. More please...

2011 bottle, opened in 2011.

A – Black body with the one of the darkest heads I’ve ever seen. The head has super-fine bubbles and holds up well with nice retention and lace. The beer is incredibly viscous with better legs than most red wines.

S – Dark brown sugar, cinnamon, espresso, ancho chilies, light booze.

T – This beer is what a billionaire's milk chocolate should taste like. Chocolate covered espresso beans, delicious raisiny ancho chilies, cinnamon, soft pepper heat, toffee, and vanilla. The flavors are soft, complex, well balanced and prominent. An absolutely beautiful flavor profile.

M – Stunningly smooth, medium/full body. Great sweet vanilla / spicy chili / bitter cocoa finish with a touch of warm booze.

O – Fantastic balance and flavor. It’s rare that a brewer posts an ingredient bill as complex as this on the bottle and everything comes through. It's even rarer that those flavors come through so clean and incredibly well integrated. Tip of the hat to CCB, job well done.

This was one of the best cinnamon spiced beers I've ever had! The flavors that came from this were perfect. The alcohol heat was well hidden by the chiles in the back. I will definitely be going to Huna day next year!

Pours pitch black, bubbling up a great one finger dark brown head, lingers for a while until it turns to a thick sticky lacing.
Huge cocoa in the smell, lots of cinnamon and vanilla, milky and dark chocolate, fig, raisin, veggie chilli pepper, lower coffee notes, faint wood. The smell is incredible, with just a small hint of booze.
Roasty robust taste, huge with dark chocolate, riddled with dry plums and figs, spicy with a lot of woody cinnamon, rich vanilla, even faint licorice. Mellows down and gets a bit sweeter, with sticky molasses and toffee, only to be balanced perfectly in the end with some roasted coffee, dark malts and faint smoked woodiness. The chillies bring a nice warm prickle in the back of the throat, just enough so you know they're there. Taste really brings up all that's written on the label, amplified, rich and perfectly balanced.
Thick body, very smooth, with a very tiny bit of booze present, nowhere near disturbing. Full complex aftertaste, extra roasty.
A huge imperial stout, unique, worth any effort and future budget-hole to get again.

A Huge thanks to DarthKostrizer and his pregnant wife who wanted to save this til after the baby, but I talked her out of it cuz her trademaster husband can get more!!

Thick soy saucy looking. Pitch black. Oily. Very viscous. Brown grease left while swirled. Thick Brown head. Excellent retention and spotty lacing.

Kind of even smells like a mild soy sauce for a second then amazing Bitter chocolate brownies with a hint of earthy pepper. Faint leather and oak. Fantastic big nose.

Wow. Flavor has So much going on. Bitter chocolate brownie, dark earthy green chili. Big changes and variation from beginning to end. Earthy robust coffee along with espresso. Just delicious.

Full bodied velvety smooth, creamy viscous mouthfeel

Overall this is just a phenomenal stout! So big, bold and complex. I really liked Marshal Zhukov and this is even much better. A must find. Share with others!

So, for my 100th review I thought I'd review a special beer.

The beer is awesomely black. No head. Mysterious.

In the nose you get chocolate, chili, some cinnamon, and a few other smells I can't identify. The smell adds to the mystery.

Only in your mouth can you truly appreciate the complexity of this beer. The layers of flavor are nothing short of astonishing. So much going on that every sip is a new experience. Wow.

In the mouth it is a smooth, creamy, well-balanced treat. Almost velvety.

This is one of the most drinkable beers I've had, much less one with such a high ABV. I just wish they made this one more often.

This is the best Imperial Stout I have tasted I had on tap at the 2011 release and also opened a bottle at the Jackie O's One Funky Afternoon bottle release. The bottle that I had opened was damaged a little in shiping and some air got into the bottle so it tasted a little flat but was still hands down one of my favorite beers. Pour it in a glass and it looks like motor oil with a dark chocolate brown head. You can smell the chocolate and what ever peppers they used in brewing. Chocolate came through strongest in the taste for me along with the peppers, hints of coffee as well. Like I said one of my favorite beers I just wish more would have made it back with me from spring break.

Bottle received in a trade with jgam115, thanks a bunch man, this was goddamn amazing. Shared with stillmatic2232.

Pours a deep dark opaque black, with a copper orange-ish brown head that looks like straight up cinnamon. Holy crap, coolest looking head ever. Unfortunately, it dissipates in less than a minute, which I could have expected given how big and chock full of crap this one is. Not much lacing.

Smells heavenly. Huge cinnamon aroma, with lots of fudgy chocolate, some vanilla, and a slight pepper aroma.

The taste is even more over the top delicious. Honestly tastes like a cinnamon roll studded with little pieces of pepper and drizzled with copious amounts of chocolate syrup and vanilla frosting. The flavors come together incredibly well, with cinnamon leading the way and dominating the conversation. There's a slight pepper twang at the end of each sip that builds up in the back of your throat, and leaves your lips a little tingly.

Honestly, probably the best mouthfeel on a beer I've ever had. Just the right amount of thickness in the body- viscous and chewy without being overbearing. Low carbonation, insanely creamy. No alcohol burn is present whatsoever.

This is next level. I can't believe a beer like this exists. If you haven't tried this, do everything you can to get your hands on some.

Just on my way back from the 2013 event and was lucky enough to have this on an unlimited tap. After having the 11 and 12 I knew this was one of my all time favorites. The 2013 did not disappoint. Pours a deep brown/black with a thick brown/red velvet head. Smells of vanilla, marshmallow, cinnamon, chili, chocolate and a little roast. Spices come through first on the taste then mellows into a nice caramel vanilla with a bit of burnt cacao. Fantastic overall and it seems to get better every year.

Thanks CCB for making great beer! See you in 2014.
