Such a dark beer. Imposing at its finest. It fills the glass with blackness and tops off the body with a thick milk chocolate head that lasts and leaves lacing.

Rich chocolate and vanilla sweetness, cinnamon, and peppers. All the adjuncts work nicely to make an inviting aroma. Everything is big and prevalent.

Tons of chocolate everywhere. Cinnamon and pepper come mid-palate. More pepper flavor than heat. Coffee and dark fruit stout notes. Fairly big sweetness.

The thickness of the beer is what caught me off guard at first sip. It is so smooth as well with light carbonation. Perfect.

Such a crazy beer. Almost over the top with all the additions. Makes for a good dessert sipper to relax with.

750 mL bottle drank as part of a Better Beer Authority (BBA) blind tasting, unknown bottling date but 2013 vintage, poured into a large snifter glass and drank over ~30 minutes:

A: 2/3 - dark brown-to-black (cannot read or see through), creamy tan carbonation pours thick and then settles into a subtle glass lacing, large alcohol legs that recirculates on swirling

S: 10/12 - lots of complex notes that were initially muted with a cold pour but then started to pop - caramel, toffee, molasses, vanilla, coconut, cinnamon; the typical imperial stout notes - chocolate, roasted coffee/espresso, roasted barley - were present but took a back seat to the other aroma; some alcohol; no hop character

T: 18/20: on the front of the tongue, the flavor follows the aroma - big vanilla bean, coconut, toffee, caramel and cinnamon; in the middle of the mouth, these flavors continue to develop and expand with lots of malt sweetness; some alcohol character with a mild-to-moderate residual sweetness on the aftertaste

M: 4/5 - big sticky mouthfeel from the rich malts and alcohol; moderate-to-high carbonation for style

O: 8/10 - I had the privilege to try this beer as part to a BBA blind beer tasting and thanks to Dave Martinez for the opportunity; obviously, there's lot of hype surrounding this beer, and, I think, it was close to living up to it; as part of the blind tasting, I thought that this beer was barrel-aged, which is a huge compliment to its complexity; the only reason that I didn't score it higher was because there was too much residual sweetness on the back of the palate and in the aftertaste; it if was a little drier, this would have easily been a 9 or 10 overall; would love to try DB Hunahpu next!

Thanks to pushkinwow for the bottle!

Pours a deep black color with a short tan head with minimal/no lace. The nose starts with dark roasted malts, dark chocolate, and maybe a touch of coffee and of course, chili peppers. Another surprisingly balanced chili pepper stout (though not surprising from CC), dark roasted malt, dark chocolate, toffee, dark fruits (prunes) but finishes with warm chili peppers. A nice thick body and low carbonation, silky, smooth, round. Overall, an excellent example of a style of beer I am not usually a fan of.

Thanks to pushkinwow for this - 2013 edition

Appearance - Dark brown colour with an average size frothy head. I can't make out the amount of carbonation showing and there is some decent lacing. The head lasted for around 2-3 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Malts, chocolate, grains, coffee, chilies, vanilla, booze

Taste & Mouth - There is a below average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, chocolate, and coffee. There is also some vanilla, dark fruit, chicory, and chilies.

Overall - I'm not a fan of peppers/chilies in my beer normally, but they work so well with this beer. One of the better beers I have ever had for sure, and something that is well worth seeking out. A big bold flavourful beer that somehow remains quite drinkable and balanced.
