A: Poured a sluggish near pitch black with a huge brown cap, loads of lacing, amazing!

S: Big fresh cocoa, like hot chocolate, some spice, heat, wood, coffee and wow it smells so good

T: A rich cocoa presence here, dark and light chocolate, roasted malt, booze, cinnamon and light spice from the peppers. Big sweetness with some roasted marshmellows and vanilla. Extremely decadent and flavorful. Among the best of not the best Imperial Stout I have ever had.

M: Where do I begin? Big, rich and sweet. Big body, well carbonated, loads of taste!

Big thanks goes out to Matt Rego for sending me this bottle. 750ml from the 2012 release, into a Deschutes snifter.

A: Absolutely pitch black, an aggressive pour yields a small brown head that foams up to about a quarter of an inch and fades away leaving a ring of bubbles around the edge of the glass. Completely opaque, and easily one of the darkest beers I've ever seen.

S: Incredibly complex, there is a ton of chocolate, caramel, chili peppers, cinnamon, molasses and brown sugar. A lot of coffee in here as well. Smells massively sweet and rich. Really impressive how complex the nose is here.

T: Absolutely massive on every front. Huge chocolate and vanilla make for a ton of sweetness that leads into a strong roasted/burnt malt profile that is massive but never reaches overbearing. This roasted profile adds an acrid bitterness that pairs nicely with the hop bitterness in the beer. As it continues to warm the chocolate and vanilla really shine and become the dominant flavor profile. Just a bit of chile pepper heat and flavor finds its way in, but it is subtle and adds to the flavor without being distracting. Outstanding stuff here.

M: Absolutely perfect here, chewy and thick, massively sticky on the lips and overall just incredibly rich. No heat at all for an 11% beer, which is impressive. Spot on.

O: Thoroughly enjoyable and completely lives up to the hype. Great flavors that blend and balance to create an incredible drinking experience. My hat is off to Cigar City, this stuff is unreal.

Pours pitch black with a Frothy dark Brown head. The nose is dark fruits, roasted malt, cocoa, molasses and coffee. The taste is molasses, burnt malt, dark chocolate, coffee and a nice bitter hoppy finish. This beer has several different layers of complexity as it warms. IncludingThe pepper warmth. Medium creamy mouthfeel. Very good – worthy of the hype.

This is a review of the one released December 2011. My sister and brother-in-law brought it with them from Tampa.

Appearance: black and syrupy, low head formation, but dark tan/brown foam (never seen head this dark!)

Aroma: big notes of molasses, dark chocolate, soy sauce, rum, vanilla, and pipe tobacco

Flavor: full malty sweetness (almost cloying), but the burnt sugar, coffee, smokiness, rich roast, and cocoa notes do balance it out a little bit; laced with vanilla, tobacco, and cinnamon (in the background); finishes sweet with long-lingering caramel, roast, and molasses

Mouthfeel: full (almost syrupy) body, mild carbonation, some alcohol warmth, but most of the warming comes from the chili spice that slowly builds

Other comments: Woah. It is almost shocking how dark and thick this beer is when it emerges from the mouth of the bottle. I actually did a double-take. I have never seen a beer this dark. Drinks like a meal. I'm glad I tried it, but I probably wouldn't buy it again.

A: A pitch black in color, pour looks like motor oil, a nice tan head that fades away rather quickly, and a nice coating of lacing as you drink this one.

S: Chocolate all over this bad boy, the chili was not as present as was on the taste but slight hint, and nice mixture of dark fruits.

T: Complex taste, lots of chocolate all over this one and the slight burn from the chili is somewhat rather satisfying was very surprised. Taste is great.

M: Full bodied slight bit of carbonation, very sticky.

O: Slick, and creamy, a great tasting Imperial stout, definitely reccommend to all if you can get your hands on it, great beer for 200th review!!!!

750mL bottle. Bottled 2012. Served in a pint glass.

Pours oil black with a quarter finger deep mocha head. Spotty lacing. Very nice.

Sweet cinnamon chocolate aromas are predominant. Excellent!

Big hit of cinamon and vanilla flavors hit first. The bittersweet chocolate is right there with it. A little burnt coffee in there. The mild chili pepper heat is almost just in the aftertaste. Bold, complex and delicious. The 11% abv is barely perceptable through all that goodness.

Nice smooth creamy thick feel with low carbonation. Sticky sweet coating on the tongue. Outstanding.

One of those rare few beers that actually lives up to the hype in my opinion. Really one of the best stouts I've had and totally worth the trip from Atlanta to Tampa for my birthday!

One of my favorite beers of all time. Most recently tried a 2012 bottle, but I've had the 2010 and 2011. The 2012, fresh, is outstanding. I felt like 2011 was a little hot, and 2010 I never had fresh. So... 2012 version here in this review.

A red ring of death looks welcome on top of this beer as it pours out chocolatey black and thick. It smells of roast, vanilla, and a bit of spice, but mostly sugar/burnt sugar. The taste leads with that, and it takes a few sips before the spice presents itself in the back of your throat. If it weren't such a clingy beer, that Mexican chocolate feel wouldn't develop, but the body is so richly thick that it does. It hangs on, it perpetuates, and it builds. Ounce after ounce of vanilla, cinnamon, chocolate, alcohol, and chili pepper spice build and build in the palate.

It's honestly kind of crazy. As a dessert beer split by 4 people, threre's really nothing better. As a brew that you sit down at the bar and drink? I'd pass. But that's not what this beer is. It's a treat, a special occasion, and a gift. Thanks, Joey! Thanks, Cigar City!

2012 version, not as good as 2011

A great bitter chocolate and ruby hue, inky darkness, low retention but great creamy collar. Low carbonation.

Smells... Cinnamon, bitter grain, super bright chiles... Light toasted grain. Just overwhelmed cinnamon and chiles.

Flavors... A light Belgian yeast sweetness, burning cinnamon, huge Chile. Fineshes with cinnamon spice, Chile heat, and smoke. Like charred paper. way too much Chile.

Huge creamy silky velvet character. Strong spicy burn that lingers. Sticky flavors. Amazing stout body but the test of this fails.

2011 Vintage. Thanks for sharing, Chad! Pours a very thick black with small-medium dark tan head that diminishes quickly. Scent has a TON of cocoa to it. From first whiff, I was greeted with lovely cocoa and cinnamon. Some bitter-sweet chocolate with just a bit of chile aroma...I'm assuming there was more when this was fresh. Taste is spicy cinnamon at first, which immediately turns to sweet cinnamon. Some vanilla there as well. There sure is a lot of cinnamon flavor to this beer, which makes for a unique stout. A lot of cocoa and chocolate with just the slightest chile flavor. All these flavors mesh really well together. Wouldn't call it a complex beer per se, but definitely well-balanced. ABV hidden well. Mouthfeel is full bodied and creamy. Drinkability is high. Overall, this is one tasty imperial stout. I'm crossing my fingers I will get to try one of the barrel-aged versions.
