2012 vintage, courtesy of Axic10 in the Secret Bunny BIF, thanks Alex! (reviewed from notes taken 4/10/2012)

A- pours a deep black with no light penetration. There is a mocha-colored, one-half finger head that rests atop this dark beast. Very little lacing is present.

S- Coffee, dark chocolate, chilis, vanilla, roasted malt, dried dark fruits come through in the background.

T- like a party! Vanilla presents itself immediately and is followed by cocoa. Dark fruit and molasses/brown sugar enter in shortly thereafter. Coffee makes a cameo somewhere in the mix. Finally, chili arrives casually late on the finish. At no point are any of the flavors unaccompanied; each just stands out at a different point.

M- Thick with enough carbonation to break it up just a bit. A coating is left with each sip.

O- I absolutely loved this beer. I would really like to try one of the barrel-aged variants. The complexity is unbelievable. I am glad that I drank this fresh so I have an experience to compare the BA version to if I ever get to try it.

Thanks, Eric

A. Pours thick, syrupy, black. A huge three finger dark brown head that lightens to a medium brown and settles to a half finger. Each swirl knocks it back down to dark brown, though. Excellent lacing and tremendous legs that coat the glass. Head is thick and creamy. One of the best stouts I have seen.

S. chocolate, brownie batter, some vanilla, coffee roast, and cinnamon.

T. Rich fudge, vanilla bean, some milk chocolate, roasted coffee beans, cinnamon, and chili spice. Spiciness is very apparent on the finish. Drinks like a chocolate shake with a kick.

M. Extremely viscous with a near syrup like consistency. One of the thickest beers I have had. Seems a little undercarbed.

O. An excellent stout here. The chiles really add another dimension to this and make the experience all the better. Jam packed with fudge and vanilla, this is a treat. Will definitely continue to seek it out.

Bottle share in Hoboken, NJ.

Vertical tasting of 2012 and 2011.

A: Pours an opaque jet black in color. The beer has a thin extremely dark mocha head that reduces to an extremely thin layer over the majority of the surface of the beer with a thicker ring at the edges of the glass. Light lacing is observed.

S: Lots of aromas of dark roasted malts, coffee, bittersweet chocolate, and some spicy peppers (the spicy peppers are far more present in the 2012).

T: There is a very nice presence of lots of bittersweet chocolate, freshly ground coffee, and dark roasted malts upfront in this beer. The chili pepper flavors are present in the 2012 but had mellowed out of the 2011. Nice lingering bitterness.

M: Full bodied with low amounts of carbonation. Very smooth.

O: Awesome flavor and great complexity in both the smell and taste. This beer is very enjoyable but is a sipping beer, albeit one that I would enjoy sipping all evening long.

I picked this up, 2011 vintage, in a brewery release BIF, shared with a friend. The pour is thick, and visous, thin tan head. The aroma is great, chocolate, vanilla, and oak, hints of cinamon. Very complex brew, lots of chocolate and vanilla, hints of cinamon. I did not pick up any chile notes, but my tasting partner did. The beer is full bodied, light carbonation, definite sipper. Lives up to hype, would love to try a fresh bottle to see if I could pick up the chile notes.

Had at a chili beer tasting including Mexican Cake, Chocolate Sombrero, Theobroma, Cocoa Mole, and Ghost Face Killah.

This pours a deep but not all that viscous black, surprising given the base beer, but with a nice pretty, frothy dark head. On the nose there is a complex interplay of chili, cinnamon, hops, etc. To me there is just too much going on, too many things seeking dominance and not achieving any sort of balance between them. In the mouth this clears up a bit as the chilis and alcohol combine for a heat presence, with cinnamon and roast providing the backbone of the flavor. The body is medium heavy with a long pleasant finish of heat once the various secondary flavors die out.

Overall, this is a beer in which the quality is absolutely evident but for me it just doesn't sit right. I see why people enjoy it, but I wasn't all that impressed and would rather drink the base.

2012

Pour Motor oil black with the darkest brown head ive seen on a stout thats creamy and thick. looks very viscous with good lacing left around the glass

i had my nose in the glass for a good amount of time before taking my first sip. its a very complex nose and i couldn't get enough. mildly smokey pasilla pepper, cinnamon, dark chocolate from the cacao nibs, some fruits and a little coffee.

cacao nibs hit you first, with cinnamon and the smokey pasilla back end with some licorice.

full bodied super viscous medium carbonation

overall this was fantastic extremely complex not only on the nose but in the taste. i really want to get my hands on another bottle and see it age just a little bit

A: pours black with a finger of dark tan head that fades into a thin ring with no lacing.

S. Roasted malts with lots of chocolate, chile, cinnamon, and vanilla. Smells amazing.

T: similar to the aroma, tons of chocolate, cinnamon, chiles, vanilla, smoke, and roasted malts.

M: thick body with low carbonation, this beer is nice and creamy.

O: a great beer, overall. I love the combination of chocolate and spice.

A: Poured a sluggish near pitch black with a huge brown cap, loads of lacing, amazing!

S: Big fresh cocoa, like hot chocolate, some spice, heat, wood, coffee and wow it smells so good

T: A rich cocoa presence here, dark and light chocolate, roasted malt, booze, cinnamon and light spice from the peppers. Big sweetness with some roasted marshmellows and vanilla. Extremely decadent and flavorful. Among the best of not the best Imperial Stout I have ever had.

M: Where do I begin? Big, rich and sweet. Big body, well carbonated, loads of taste!

O: WOW!
