Notes/Commercial Description:
Dark in color with a ruby hue with forward notes of chocolate and caramel and light toffee notes in the aroma. Flavor has big notes of bittersweet chocolate with notes of caramel and toffee and moderate hop bitterness and more caramel and toffee and slight hints of char. A big take on a classic style.

12oz can

A- Dark black with khaki head, low in retention. Carb sticks to the glass.

S- Bland, void; some malt

T- It comes off as a really light porter with a weird aftertaste. The aftertaste is minimal, but comes off as a vegetable. V8

M- Very light, some decent carb follows down the throat

O- Just not impressed. CCB is a top brewery for me; this one just didn't hit the spot.

Pours out very black in color, not translucent with a nice two-finger light brown head with decent retention and decent lacing.

Smell is dark malts, and a nice sweet smell, I don't get anything else out of the nose but is certainly smells nice.

Taste is dark malts, some nice coffee but not overwhelming, some chocolate, but I would say the malt backbone is the most prominent here. Quite nice tasting.

Mouthfeel is a definitely not thin due to the carbonation but not on the thicker side either. On a 1 to 5 scale on thickness I would say it is a 2 but nice and silky.

Overall I really liked this beer and was surprised by how good it was. I have tried many CCB beers at the brewery and thought many were great but the last time I was there they had a limited tap selection (probably due to being close to Huna Day) and was underwhelmed. This beer has me back on the train again. It's not overly complex but it is pretty good.

12oz can. Forgot to check the canning date, but should have been fairly fresh. Thanks Doug. Poured into a Lawson's snifter today, 5/1/2014.

A- Dark brown body, one finger offwhite head with little retention. Some lacing. Looks like a decent porter, pours watery though compared to Cigar City stouts even though thats not a fair comparison.

S- Chocolate, a little coffee and that's about it. No roast malt, no earthiness, quite a sweet nose that isn't complex but nevertheless is fairly enjoyable.

F- Sweet chocolate, slight coffee, perhaps a little lactose. Nothing special. Don't really get any hop contribution, no earthiness or noble notes. Not a complex or interesting flavour profile, but it is certainly not bad at all.

M- Thin bodied, a bit watery but it is quite drinkable. No creaminess like in Black Butte. There is a slight sweet aftertaste that doesn't get in the way of enjoying this beer, though.

O- Not that great of a porter but it's not terrible; in my neck of the woods, Edmund Fitzgerald is far better, and if you're comparing nationally, this is nothing compared to Everett. I definitely don't recommend trading for this if you can get Edmund Fitzgerald or Black Butte.
