2010, Batch 2. Shared at a recent bottle share. Poured into a 6 oz sampling glass, ~6C. From notes.

A cloudy orange brown body that is a bit odd looking with a nice light head that leaves minimal lacing behind gives way to aromas of cloves and spices with a hint of sourness. Quite a tart body, which was actually quite nice, though I am not sure if it was intended or not. Works well with the spices. The cedar aging was not apparent to me, and this was only my third sample of the night, so I don't think my palate was wrecked yet. Tartness lingers on the palate, and almost seems too tart after a time. An enjoyable beer of a different style than is 'usual' that I am sad to see has been retired...

Thanks to Chris (spycow) and by extension Casey for this oddity. Served in a Surly Darkness glass.

A - Quick-dissolving white foam settles to a thin ring and some wisps on top, but not lacework. Hazy peach body.

S - Cedar! Oranges? Juniper, an interesting musky aroma, and more cedar. There's sharp flavor that initially assumed was alcohol, but it might just be the cedar-aging? Odd, but strangely compelling.

T - Taste has less overt cedar character, with more of the malt character shining through. Interesting citrus flavors, and some spruce and Christmas wreath. The alcohol(?) note from the aroma is gone.

M - Medium zesty carbonation, medium body, extremely dry and tannic, with only a touch of stickiness in the finish. No alcohol warmth present.

D - WTF? This sounded like it would a train wreck, but it was surprisingly excellent. I refilled my glass, and the bottle emptied very quickly. I'll have to let GruitHead84 know that he should track this one down. Certainly one of the best gruits I've ever had.

Well... This is a weird beer. Was really looking forward to it

Pours a crisp clear orangish. Lots of white head. Looks pretty decent. Smells cedar heavy. Holy cow. Lots of wood. Tastes sweet and cedar heavy. Very odd. Lots of weird aromas and flavours. WeLl carbonated and interesting.

This beer poured out as a murky looking orange brown color. The head was pretty good on it and left a decent lacing. The smell of the cedar wasn't overly strong but there were elements of it in there. There were some herbal and citrusy aromas on the nose as well. The taste had some black pepper and lemon to it. There were some other light herbal notes on the tongue too. The mouthfeel was smooth and felt rather mellow from the barrel again. Overall I thought this beer was very good and would surely try it again.

Had this one during the 'We Want The Funk!' tasting that was graciously hosted by beermeX2! Not sure who shared this one with the group, but thanks (let me know if you were there and know who did so I can give proper credit)! Served from bottle into a Mikkeller flute. Poured a hazy yellow-orange with a minimal white head head. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, cedar, and fruit. The flavor was of sweet malt, sour, cedar, and fruit. It had a light feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was a decent brew. Based on some things I have heard about this in the past I wasn't really expecting this one to be too good, so I went in with low expectations. While this definitely wasn't a great brew, it wasn't as bad as I had been hearing. The aroma wasn't that great or complex, but the flavor had a nice sour touch to it that made it pretty nice and easy to drink. The sour really blended well with fruit and cedar better than I would have imagined it would on paper. Definitely worth trying at least once to be the judge for yourself.

750 mL bottle tried 24 Sep 2010. Courtesy of ktrillionaire, thanks!

Served this in the 0.4 L Steiner Pils snifter. Medium sized beige head. Well carbonated, fizzy. Cloudy rosy copper in color. Aroma is an unusual combination of grapefruit and cedar with a touch of sour pomegranite. Starts fruity sour, reminiscent of pomegranite and tart cherries. Lots of cedar throughout. Medium to light body, mild alcohol. Finish and aftertaste are slightly bitter with a strong cedar presence.

An interesting take on the style, cedar dominates this beer.

Big thanks to Jeff for sharing this very interesting brew - kudos!

Appearance -- Pours a hazed tangeirne shade with the slimmest of sudsy white heads. Looks handsome in the glass.

Smell -- Medicinal cedar, salted lemons, underripe tart berries, spice, and black pepper. Very interesting.

Taste -- Salted lemons and cedar really stand out. Berry tartness and mild funk are also apparent. Spice and black pepper sharp in the finish. Strong, but simple.

Mouthfeel -- Medium-bodied, medium carbonation. Suits the flavor profile well.

Overall -- Glad I could try this, but the 3-4oz or so that I consumed were more than adequate. Cedar is really overpowering, but there was also some berry tartness that wasn't quite my cup of tea.

Acquired this through a trade with fogdog. Thanks Kevin!

Poured into a Cigar City snifter.

Appearance: Wow, this looks nothing like the only other gruit I've had (Magnolia Brewing Co.'s Weekapaug Gruit). Bright, crystal clear, and a mix of gold and candy apple red - the body's absolutely gorgeous! The head, on the other hand, is pretty weak: a thin halo of white bubbles quickly decays to absolutely nothing. No lacing either.

Smell: Whoa! Umm... that's interesting. Tons of funk, tropical fruits, and wild yeast. Caramel/sugar glaze and sweet tarts both come to mind. Sweet, sour, and acidic. Very different.

Taste: As with the aroma, the taste is sweet, acidic, and tart. I get citrus (mainly tangerine and grapefruit), Reisling wine, potpourri, and grape Kool-Aid. Finishes dry, exhibiting mainly earthy, floral, and herbal flavors, but also a touch of Sweet Tart-like sourness.

Mouthfeel: Sweet, light-bodied, generously carbonated with fine bubbles, tart, earthy, and dry. Certainly different, almost like a cross between a wild ale and a champagne.

Overall: A weird beer, but also an interesting one. Not really my cup of tea, but I'm happy I tried it.
