As a longtime fan of West Coast IPAs, I was really looking forward to trying this beer. As it happens, I was on vacation in Southern California at the time Cigar City released it, so I thought I would miss it. But Mr. Beery's in Sarasota got a keg of it and tapped it tonight, so I made a bee line over and had a glass.
It's a cloudy amber in color without much head.
The aroma is hoppy, but not hugely so. Big alcohol aromas.
The taste is classic San Diego Pale Ale: sweet and bitter with a big alcohol bite. Caramel, toffee and pineapple flavors are very prominent, with fusel alcohol flavors rounding it out. I've fried my palate on big IPAs, so this is probably a massively bitter beer, I just can't tell anymore.
The body is syrupy and slick, in short: wonderful.
Overall this is a great beer. Cigar City brews in a West Coast style and essentially one-ups California. I know: I've just been there.

Reviewed from notes. Had out of a firkin at CCB tasting room. Poured into a snifter glass.
A: Deep caramel in color, translucent, with a one-finger khaki head and no visible carbonation.
S: Sweet malts, a bit of pine & citrus hops, and boozy. Some roasted caramel.
T: Follows the nose very closely. The hoppiness is still trying to hold on but is clearly losing the battle. Still a little alcohol heat but it does seem tamed. Overall a nice sweetness here.
M: Medium body, smooth & silky mouthfeel. Boozy but the alcohol heat doesn't overwhelm. Minimal carbonation sensation, likely due in part to the firkin serving.
O: Wow, this was very good, and I'm glad I had the chance to try it! Guess they had this one aging for the last couple years. I never had the opportunity to try it fresh, but it sure was tasty as is!

Pours a beautiful but thin golden red color – really beautiful. A small white head tops the beer and quickly recedes. Smells of deep citrus hops so very fruity. First sip has shown some age but this one was kept in my fridge since purchase. The hops have so faded but in its place a pleasant maltiness shines thru to the point of being both chewy and doughy. Super candy sweet notes are upfront and in your face without the hops to balance it. Plenty of toffee too. I keep thinking how nice it would be to have this one fresh and on cedar. I had this one fresh and enjoyed it more than the aged version. Pretty tough to drink but I’ll manage.
