This is an American White Oak-aged version of Jai Alai India Pale Ale. The white oak adds smoothing notes of vanilla and slight hints of dill to the aroma and flavor profile. The finish is elegantly dry due to the light tannin notes from oak aging and though still loaded with hop flavor, hop bitterness is more restrained.

A - low white head settles to a white ring over a clear amber body.

S - tomatoes and carrots, earthy citrus hops, and a touch of oak.

T - Not much oak, sweet vegetal flavors, earthy hops.

M - dry woodiness, medium body, and quite smooth.

The beer is a copper orange hue with a thick, white head that displays lasting retention and leaves ample lacing cascading down the pint glass.

The aroma is a huge blast of oak and vanilla, followed by hops and some caramel malt. I can smell the beer from a few feet away. Alrighty then.

The flavor is decent. The beer is done well, but a little bit goes a long way here. Sweet and oaky, this is best enjoyed in small doses. I don't see this brew as an IPA, per se, but more of a wood aged strong ale. Again, lots of oak and vanilla dominate the flavor profile to a large degree. The heavy malt bill works with the beer, but not if you were expecting or hoping for a hop forward IPA. This drinks more along the lines of an American strong ale or barleywine, as the hop profile is being overrun with oak, vanilla, and sweet malt.

An interesting brew. I have yet to truly relish any sort of barrel aged IPA. I am all for exploration and creativity, but it seems, to me at least, that IPAs are better left alone. I am grateful for the opportunity to try this. Not my favorite type of beer, but I would certainly try it again. (1,230 characters)

Hazy copper pint with a nice thick cap good lacing
Smells big coconut with hops in the back
Taste follows the nose but with a pronounced wood flavor, reminds me of the smell from freshly split wood the longer this goes the more woody it gets which just gets a bit unpleasant.
Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied bright carbonation
Overall not a bad beer but a pint was a bit much by the end (392 characters)

Liter flip-top growler into a tulip glass. Thanks go to Jw347 for this in a recent trade.

Pours a great looking clear copper here, with maybe just the slightest haze to it, topped with about a finger of bright-white foamy head. This retains with a tight ½ finger that throws a heavy cascade of rich and spotty foam all over the sides of the glass. Really nice rich look here. The Jai Alai jumps out immediately, being floral, spicy, and lush with tropical fruit character that it then undercut some more herbal and danker character as well. Stiff smelling grains and warmth sit underneath the hop flavors but it's the wood and vanilla notes that are most prominent here. Maybe a bit too much actually, but it doesn't seem to interfere with the other flavors in the nose much.

The taste is initially pretty sweet with lightly toasted grains and juicy citrus character but is well balanced by a hoppy bite of bitter grapefruit and lingering notes of rind and spice which give this a deep and assertive finish. The vanilla and tannins from the oak add a LOT of extra woody and earthy tanginess to the profile that then lends this some considerable dryness as well. The mouthfeel has a heavier medium bodied feel to it, with a fuller creaminess that fills up the mouth in the front but then gives way to a much slicker feel from all of those hop oils more towards the swallow. There is some warmth here in the body and it about falls into what you would expect for a 7-8% beer.

I haven't had a whole lot of wood-aged IPAs to compare this to but this one seemed a little too heavy on the oak flavors at times. I would have liked to have seen all of that vanilla and wood be a bit more integrated in with the other flavors and that combined with the alcohol heft that is present in the body are what held the drinkibility of this back some for me. I'm definitely glad that I got to try it but this liter growler was more than enough for me. (1,941 characters)

Well, that will teach me to send an unsolicited box to moose3285. I sent him a little box a couple months ago &, lo & behold, he ships a mammoth box full of Cigar City treats that I've never tried before. I know where you live, man.

Popped open & de-virginizes an excellent Great Lakes glass sent recently by bb189 (thanks!). Marshmallow head leans over a cloudy beer of light orange character & naked carbonation. Smell is a lovely blend of subdued wood & tropical hops, but less prominent than the base beer.

White Oak Jai Alai brings the oak in the form of a gentle clubbing. The oak doesn't dominate the front end, but the entire second half & locker room belong to the wood. Jai Alai's floral, tropical fruits duck & weave into view immediately, but slink away under the weight of the oak.

Let's be honest, I'd love to try every version of Jai Alai CC can dream up. This is the third version I've tasted & it's *only* very good. The oak bludgeoned some of Jai Alai's best qualities into the second tier. Don't get the idea I'd ever turn one down, though. (1,065 characters)

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a snifter.

A -Beer is a medium copper color, slightly cloudy. Head is very fluffy and off-white colored. When I poured it the head foamed up drastically and I had to stop pouring to keep it from overflowing the glass. Possible contamination?

S - Crisp Northwestern hops dominate. Then there is a strong nutty or coconut note and lots of wood. No malt aroma breaks through.

T - The initial hit is strong hops flavor and bitterness. As that fades the coconut and nut flavors roll in. There is also an astringent quality in the end, like iced tea.

M - Body is light. Fizzy carbonation. Massive hops bitterness. No alcohol burn.

D - Overall a good IPA with very strong hop level. The coconut flavor and aroma are very pronounced and I guess they are from the white oak. (802 characters)

Always good to see beers aged on wood. They are the best!

Beautiful pour, orangish tan with a perfect beige head. Lace down the glass!

Nose has candy malts, bitter hops and oak.

Taste has nice piney hops up front and through the finish. Well balanced by malts and wood.

I’m finally getting to the bottom of Stankonia’s LIF box; up next is CCB’s White Oak Jai Alai IPA. I’ve seen this beer on “disappointment of the year” and “beer of the year” lists, so I’m ready for anything. Cheers!

Brewed five months ago (“AUG2011” on the label).

A: Hazy amber-orange body, pouring with a moderate thickness. Cream-colored head, thick enough to produce a two-fingered head in an oversized wine glass. Just a shade of lacing with hardly any retention.

S: Pumpkin spice, toffee, and figgy malts, spicy and light at first whiff. Hops are citrusy and a little astringent, feeling medical and syrupy when combined with those base scents. Bubblegum, light woodiness, and strong (very strong) pine, as well. Ends on a note of orange rind.

T: Starts fruity – sweet, refreshing citrus fruit with a bitter orange-juice bite. Then come the hops, with a flavor of powerful, resiny pine; it’s a common bitterness for an IPA. The backbone reminds me of Sierra Nevada’s Celebration Ale – a compliment for any IPA – because of its big-bread taste and its dark, chewy malts. There isn’t much to indicate this beer was aged on any type of wood, though, especially something as hearty as oak. It’s one of those beers where I wish there was more, but I’m still ok with the flavor profile. Dry, fruity-sweet aftertaste; a mouthful of orange, honey, and rose petals ends it.

M: Smooth, somewhat flat-feeling. Feels full and goes down very easy.

O: Another relatively good IPA from Cigar City. As far as wood-aged IPAs go, this is the first one I’ve had, so I can’t really say how it stacks up to beers like FFF Blackheart and the like. Only one thing to do, then: drink more beer like this. Shame… (1,744 characters)

A - Gusher! Exploded out of the bottle and pours a deep hazy amber color. Huge foamy slightly off white head. Lots of lacing.

S - Earthy hops with oak and alcohol. Faint hints of citrus. Bready, biscuity malt.

T - Big sweet biscuity maltiness. Lemongrass hops and wood. Bitterness sets in as the tongue dries out. Oak and alcohol are left behind.

M - Medium body with lots of carbonation. The carbonation is very refreshing.

O - Meh. Not exactly sure of the age of this bottle. I think it may be a little past its prime. That being said. The body, appearance and aroma are nice. Not a ton of hop bite, but I think it perhaps has just faded. (644 characters)

Had this on-tap at CCB. Served on a pint glass.

A: dark amber/brownish color, more on the opaque side. Small fizzy head but good retention. Very good lacing decorating the glass with foamy strands.

S: strong coconut smell, oak, pineapple, also some floral hints and hops. More on the 'sweet' side.

T: herbal, hoppy, wood. The taste of the hops is disguised a bit as the beer goes down and ends with some sweet notes.

M: light to medium body, carbonation was a bit on the high side.

O: overall it was a pretty good beer and a very peculiar IPA. I wish carbonation was on the lower side. Regardless, I recommend this beer. (625 characters)

12oz bottle, thanks to whoever sent this to me as an extra. Poured into imperial nonic.

A - Pours a mirky/hazy orange color, white head, thin ring, wisps on top, spotty lacing.

S - Oak, citrus, hoppy bitterness, some malty sweetness. Not exactly sure how old this is, but the hops are pretty faint while the oak takes a front seat.

T - Oak, light hoppy bite, tropical notes, citrus peel. The oak, hops, and sweetness are really nice and smooth. Nothing is too over-the-top, although the oak is very easy to pick out.

M - Light, good carbonation, oily semi-dry finish.

O - This is really the first oak-aged IPA I've ever had. I really like the oak characteristic that this beer has. It doesn't hurt the hops or tropical notes, which surprises me. Really nice for something different and I would drink again but not a session IPA by any means. (847 characters)

A: Pours a dark hazy amber with a 1finger head that quickly dissipates to a thin film. Plenty of lacing is present.

S: Oak, Toffee, Vanilla, a hint of resin/pine a hint of tropical fruit lingers as well.

T: Very close to the nose. Lots of Oak, toffee, vanilla some pine and hint of grapefruit.

M: Medium body and carbonation. Finish's dry and slightly watery.

O: Not sure what to make of it. Lots of oak but minimal citrus /IPA. Worth a tick non the less. (544 characters)

Pours a hazy honey-colored orange. Smell is kind of offputting: funky and oaky citrus and pine; maybe some cedar; pink grapefruit; sweet and malty. I like all those aromas, but together, in this beer, they aren't working for me. Tastes great, however: very oaky, nice hints of vanilla, slightly sweet, crispy bitter pine. Medium-carbed, which plays well with the oak and mild fruitiness. Aftertaste is phemomenal: really dry, lots of oak and vanilla. I really enjoyed this one: flavor, mouthfeel, and aftertaste were all standouts. Looking forward to trying the regular (694 characters)

Straight pour from 12oz pry-off beer to a 25cl Duvel Single tulip; bottling date of October 16, 2012 printed in white ink, sideways near the back of the label (“16 OCT 2012”), so exactly two weeks old on the date of consumption.

Appearance (4.0): Pours a good two fingers of moderately tight head, custard-colored, above a very slightly hazy, deep amber colored-body that has deep orange hues against the light. The head leaves some widely-spaced but thick legs of lace, and the head falls to a thick collar towards the end. Good-looking beer, not perfect but very good overall.

Smell (3.5): Dill? Yeah, that’s a very noticeable dill scent, which I hadn’t picked up on before. Little bit of vanilla that blends with that at-first-odd dill note to come off somewhat coconutty. There’s some understated, pale, grainy malt character underneath, but it gets lost in the oak and hops, for the most part. Turns more toasted coconut as it warms.

Taste (4.0): This can go one of two ways: at first it can come off as a pale ale brewed with some dill that accounts for both body flavor and bitterness, or it can come off as a moderately citrusy IPA with some toasted coconut and coconut milk tones, adding a mellow, buttery but still fruity dimension to the base beer. Personally I’m not enjoying the dill end of the spectrum, so I’m trying to focus on the coconut dynamic. Fortunately, it goes more toward the coconut tones as it warms. Moving on . . .

So, the Jai Alai base is evident here: some plain, lightly sugary bread character (think of, maybe, an elephant’s ear pastry) acts as a base for some good, citrusy fruit character. The juicy, orange-pineapple kind of citrus tones that are so prominent in the base beer are muted here underneath the coconut tones (hi there, white oak), but the citrus zest bitterness comes out at the end, though somewhat tame compared to the base, too. This really mellows as it warms, the coconut (née dill) blends in better; meanwhile, no alcohol or yeast notes at all. Improves quite a bit as it warms, actually.

Mouthfeel (4.0): Even carbonation, not prickly at any point but sharpens a bit before it foams on the way down; the body is just under medium-weight, not syrupy at all and only a bit of oily character. Finishes pretty dry.

Overall (3.5): I haven’t had many wood- or barrel-aged hoppy pales before, and I appreciate this one but I admit I’m not convinced on the idea behind it*. I’m sure it has potential and I can see why a lot of people like this beer a lot, but it’s not 100% for me. My advice is this: if you think you’d be averse to dill, let it warm up first, and then it turns into a smoother, woody, coconutty dimension. Definitely not a bad beer overall, but not for everyone.

*Edit: I take that back, Burton Baton is a phenomenal beer. (2,829 characters)

A slightly hazy ruby red amber with a finger of fluffy foam poured into my tulip. Nose reveals a touch of sweet strawberry, blood orange, creamy vanilla and custard filled pastry. Tasty is creamy and refreshing with a light hop bite as well as a touch of tannins from the oak the the finish. The taste is nearly as complex as the nose but does have some red fruit along with bitter citrus peel and a nice dry malt taste. Very nice ipa and easily drinkable as well. (464 characters)

Clear straw colored. Translucent. Sticky white head fades.
Nose is barny hops. Slightly floral, even vague Belgian hints. Some wild yeasty hops combo.
Taste is tangy orange, hops, with slight pepper. More citrus and dry wood. Decent mouthfeel.

Pours a billowy yellow-orange with about a two inch off-white foam head.

Smells like a bit 'o pineapple, something else tropical...mango? .... and a slice of fresh grapefruit and bittering pine. The oak cuts through it like a razor blade.

Wow, the oak is present in the flavor. Kind of reminds of oaked arrogant bastard, but here the oak is much more abrasively aggressive. Grapefruit, some tropic notes, and the pine/bitterness is more than I expected.

I think I've now had 3-4 versions of this beer, but never the "base" jai alai. I have a feeling that's the best beer of the lot, since thus far, the extra stuff has proven distracting.

Mouthfeel's nice. (690 characters)

Bottle date looks like 03/11/11

A: Pours similar to it's orginal form with a hazy sort of cooked caramel caramel color and a thin cap of off-white frothy foam. Some nice lace along the glass.

S: Aroma is much more subdued here with a more pronounced spice and pinecone nose. Able to pick up a more bready malt aroma than I recall with the original as well.

T: Hops are mellowed a bit too compared to the og or maybe they have started to drop off. Either way I pick up more caramel malt flavors with an interesting sort of nutty smokiness to it. Still hoppy with tropical fruits and botanicals notes here. More of that distinct earthy spice for sure. The oak is very subtle and you really have to search for it but it does linger and the combination of flavors gives off a very citrus orange-like flavor. Really nice. Again rather light or void even on the overall bitterness to the palate. Finishes light, dry and crisp with mild ABV detection.

M: Great mf as well with a slightly sticky and slick coat to the tongue. Overall a very creamy light bodied brew that is delicate on the palate. Would love to try on cask.

D: Much like the original a really nice fruity IPA that is incredibly light and smooth in body with no offensive sharp hop bitter bite.

An interesting take on an oaked IPA. Not really alot of wood flavor here and I definitely think the hop aroma/flavors were less pungent than the orginal. That being said still very hoppy and delicous with an overall flavor impression of a sort of sour-orange fruit drink. (1,605 characters)

The nose is quite nice, surprisingly I noted a lot of vanilla and mango with only a touch of the traditional hops smell. The creamy vanilla smell was pretty potent. Call me weird, but I thought this was a beautiful beer in appearance. A very cloudy apricot color, half a finger of fluffy head and very sticky lacing.

Being the only white oak beer I've ever had, the taste was a bit surprising. I noticed heavy cream and spiciness with the hops bitterness on the back end. Some sweet citrus like nectarines were present, but the lack of citrusy hops was evident. Mouthfeel was interesting, it almost bites the mouth with the carbonation but yet leaves a bit of an oily feeling. Overall, a fun intro to white oak aging, although this won't be on my short list of favorite IPAs. (830 characters)

Poured from the bottle into a nonic pint glass. Date on bottle is May 4th 2011, I think.

A very nice tight retention off white head of a good solid 3 fingers. Foamy, clumpy and tightness sits on a suspended glowing orange body with some hazyness. Too bad for the cloudyness unfortunately still looks good.

Woah what is that on the nose! It's buttery floral and grass. Garden, honeysuckle and bee pollen. Hints of salt and pickle brine. Bizarre but I am going to say I actually enjoy this.

Hit of hop and pickles. No joke, hint of salty brine of cucumber and dill pickle on the finish. DILL DILL DILL holly cow batman! I don't mind this but woah is this ridiculous. A good hop finish and initial bent, some hints of diacetyl like butter comes through also matching the butter sense on the nose.

Fairly simple feel and body, nothing off putting or outlandish.

Overall I am beginning to think aging IPAs with oak either resting, chips, or barrels is a recipe for disaster but we'll see. Right now though I need some sour cream to go with these Dill potato chips I just drank. (1,077 characters)

Pours a hazy, dark orange juice color. White slightly fizzy finger of head. Nice lace and dissipation. Aroma is fairly muted for an IPA. There are some slight tinges of tropical fruits, but more oak, wood and vanilla is present. While not atypical, it's pleasant. Good bit of sharp bitterness asserts it's IPA classification. Light notes of citrus and sweet tropical fruits, a big vanilla/wood note. Predominant creaminess to the mouthfeel, medium in body. As a whole, an interesting and undeniably tasty brew. Enjoyed the regular Jai Alai for the first time last week, time to try out one of its variations. Thanks once again to Kimdog.

Appearance - Dark orange color with some haze and a white head. Good retention, a little bit of lace.

Smell - Seems a little more on the herb+grassy side of the hop spectrum that the original, but a good amount of various fruits there still (grapefruit and mango come to mind). Oak/vanilla presence is definitely there but kinda light, sweet toffee malts as well.

Taste - Unlike the scent, oak hits you right away. Big woody vanilla tones here along with toffee and caramel malts take over the hops quite a bit, but a decent amount of citrus fruit, earthy and floral. Some oddly sharp alcohol bite pops up here and there.

Mouthfeel - Very similar to the original, a little bit on the hefty side but smooth, pretty low bitterness.

Overall - I preferred the original to this one but this a pretty interesting variation. The oak adds a very unique touch but is maybe a bit overpowering. (1,015 characters)

A- pours a burnt orange amber color with a finger of off white head.

S- amazing nose on this beer. Aromas of coconut, tropical fruit and lemon zest. Slight malt sweetness with leafy hops on the finish.

T- slight malt sweetness and leafy hop flavor. Tropical fruit and mango in the middle. Huge oak flavor on the finish that overpowers the initial flavors on the finish.

MF- smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and good low medium carbonation.

D- decent drinkability. The oak is a bit harsh and char like on the finish. (522 characters)

Poured from 12oz bottle into a tulip glass. Goldish orange pour that left a big gushing and sticky white head with very nice lacing throughout. Nose is buttery citrus, most notably tangerine and pineapple and perhaps coconut. The taste is a creamy oak, vanilla, some coconut, hops, and moderate pine. The mouthfeel was much improved when compared to the regular Jai Alai IPA. Softer and not as bitter on the tongue. This beer is obviously intended to be savored slowly to appreciate the subtle differences and over the top oakiness. Medium-bodied with a light oily finish. Finishes clean with a dank budder aftertaste in the mouth. Overall, a nice oaky/vanilla IPA from Cigar City. (681 characters)
