Pours amber in color with notes of citrus and caramel. Citrus hop bitterness upfront with notes of caramel and an Amish bread sweetness. Citrus hop bitterness returns at the end for a long dry finish.

Pours a murky copper color with hints of red and brown all over; hazy and cloudy with little tiny bits of sediment floating from bottom to top and back. Beige head forms, very foamy with large bubbles; settles quick and leaves some lacing behind. Aroma is wonderful, full of wet hops, floral, piney, and ashy; caramel malt distinguishable in the backbone with a touch of fruity sweetness. The palate picks up a slight ashy and white pepper character from the hops, alongside the slightly floral and piney tones, just a slight bit of resin. Nice bitter bite, but not overpowering or harsh. Oranges, vague grapefruit rind, and citrus take over midway through and cut through the bitterness of the hops bit by bit. Caramel and toffee accents come alive a little more upon warming up thanks to the malts used. Finish is slightly bitter with some citrus notes and a touch of caramel and yeast. Medium body, medium-high carbonation.

Very impressed, a high quality red ale and also my first ever brew from Cigar City. After tasting this, it's needless to say that I'll be trying to get my hands on more.

Almost murky, more-brown-than-red ale, topped by a firm cream head with excellent retention and leaving long lines of lacing.

Lovely aroma blending citrus and floral hops with brown sugar and caramel. Bright and bready.

Flavor beautifully matches the aroma, with sweet juicy citrus notes up front, tons of caramel and brown sugar throughout, a slightly green, herbal edge to the bitterness, lots of bread to the malt, and a bitter, citrus peel-tinged finish.

Lively mouthfeel, slightly slick and syrupy, long wet and oily finish.

This is a lovely, tasty ale, reminiscent of a lower ABV version of Brown Shugga.

Enjoyed this local brew being down in Florida for a winter get-away. Shares a common characteristic with Jai Alai, as all Cigar City beers do, which I like. May just be my favorite Red Ale. Jai Alai and some of the other Cigar's are very abundant here. I didn't know about this and wasn't looking for it. It took a while to stumble upon it. When, I finally did, it was at a large gas station, that is 70% dedicated to craft beer. Times are a-changin'.

12oz can. Canned 8/24/15 (17days old). Appearance: Deep red mahogany, slight haze, thick khaki foam cap. Aroma: Caramel malt undertone, with dominant, strong hop aromas of floral, tropical fruit, and resin. Taste: Rich caramel maltiness with a touch of dark roasted malt, quickly turning to a strong but balanced hop bitterness with tropical fruit and resin. Roast comes thru on the swallow. Mouthfeel: Medium creaminess with moderate carbonation. Finish: Resinous bitterness lingers, along with some light roast. Overall: Top notch American Amber. Malt complexity ramped up with the addition of roasted malt makes this much more enjoyable than a traditional Amber. Strong hop aromas and flavors are well balanced against the malt.

This is not my favorite style but Tocobaga is about the best red ale I've had. It pours a beautiful dark ruby color with an off white head. The smell is of citrusy hops and caramel malt. The taste follows the nose. Very drinkable for 7.5%. Cigar City only releases this a few times a year and when they do I always seek out a six pack or two.

Bottle dated 8/23/11

A - Pours a clear deep red/amber with almost two fingers of off-white head. Head has decent retention and leaves some nice lacing.

S - Some caramel, a bit of sugar and some dark fruits. Also a nice hop presence.

T -- Taste is opposite of smell, with a big hop presence up front, mostly citrus. All the other components of the smell are present in the taste, but play a supporting role. Very tasty.

M -- Medium mouthfeel. A bit oily. Finishes somewhat bitter and dry.

O - I like hoppy amber ales, and this is one of the best I've had. Would definitely get this again.
