Tocobaga and the Humidor IPA are my two favorite regular Cigar City beers. The only place you can find it consistently in bottles is at the brewery. They are going to be canning both beers in the very near future. CCB has been using a I'm glad I live a couple miles away.

On tap at the brewpub. From notes.

A - Dark gold/copper sorta colour with a one finger beige head. Bright. Great long drapes of lace and a one finger retention.

S - Bready, lot's of citrus, juicy, nice.

T - Lot's of citrus, good malt backbone, juicy, pineapple.

M - Good carbonation, full body, nice bitterness.

O/D - A nice strong, hoppy red. Drinkable and flavourful. Enjoyed the amped up balance. Good stuff.

Had a pint on tap at the brewpub.

Pours a fiery orange shade with a patchy eggshell head. Big caramel malts and citrusy, white grapefruit hops make up the aroma. The taste is of huge piney, critrusy passionfruit hops mixing flawlessly with a toasty, toffee malt profile and some clean, bready cracker notes. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a fantastic, creamy carbonation level. A chewy maltiness quickly gives way to a strong, resiny bitterness in the finish. Bitterness lasts a long while. Alcohol is impeccably well hidden throughout.

This is a stellar Red Ale. It could easily be considered an American IPA. Very hop forward with excellent malt balance. If in Florida, seek this out.

Poured into a CCB shaker.

A: Pours a clear copper amber with a 1 finger white head. After a minute or two the head dissipates to a thin covering. Nice lacing on the glass.

S: Hops, hops and more hops. This brew is fresh. A grapefruit citrus aroma. Minimal malt, focus is on the hops.

T: As anticipated from the aroma this is a pleasantly hoppy beer. Very balanced though it isn't too bitter. Lots of floral and fruity tones going on here. ABV is lost in the flavor.

M: Smooth medium to full body. A tad sticky from the hops but expected. Fairly low carbonation.

Overall I can see why this is one of the higher rated CCB brews. It kills the competiton in the amber ale category. Certainly not an IPA but a great hoppiness nonetheless.

Poured a auburn colored body with good head on top of a classic amber ale smell of sharp, citric hops and some distinct caramel malt with some breadiness even. Hops are very prevelant in the taste and balance well with the sweet caramel malt. A hoppy, dry, crisp beer in a light-to-medium body that then picks up a little sweetness and finishes with a snappy finish that leaves you wanting for more. A great example of a red ale that is not too sweet or watery and overhopped and quite enjoyable.

Had this beer on tap at Tap 42's Cigar City event. Good beer with a pretty dark red amber color. Really likin the color. Not too heavy and very well balance taste with hops and citrus notes. Feel the nice caramel taste, very smooth finish. Hops feel lingers in he mouth, great complexity. Very refreshing.

Served cold in a shaker pint at Hops & Pie in Denver.

Tocobaga is a beautiful hazy red color with a thin layer of tight creamy head.

Aroma immediately lets you know that this is going to be a hoppy red. Citrusy, piney, and a little bit malty sweet.

Flavor is really something special. It's such a great balance of malty red ale and big hop flavor. It doesn't knock you out with bitterness but gives you lots of hop goodness.

Mouthfeel is amazingly smooth and easy drinking for a strong hoppy beer.

Overall this is such an amazing beer. Flavor and mouthfeel are spot on. I've always wondered if Cigar City beers were overrated but, if this is anything to go by, they've earned their hype.

CCB event at Barcade.

Red body, white head and lace. Effervescence is apparent amidst the malty, hoppy aromas.

Nicely blended and balanced as I sip; high drinkability doesn't bode well for tomorrow morning. Between this, the Orange Wood IPA, and Huna on tap, tomorrow will be rough. Cheers!

A-Pours a brownish/red color. Head is creamy and lightly tan. Head hangs around for a while. Head laces well too.

S-A nice balanced mixture of caramel sweetness and juicy hops. Hops also show up as light pine and florals. The sweetness is stronger than I expected it to be. Smells very balanced.

T-Like the nose. Balance. I wanted this to display more hoppy assertiveness. It still tastes very nice but the malt to hop ratio is too close to 1 for me. Caramel glazed muffins and floral hops.

M-A bit creamy with a round feel. Has some nice body to it. Carbonation is rather light. Feels good.

O/D-Really ecstatic to be able to try this brew. Unfortunately I was a bit let down. Perhaps this was a bit old. Not as hoppy as I was expecting. The beer in its current state was tasty and balanced but I wanted more from this brew. Could be more dynamic. I will search this one out again and make sure its fresh and compare. Score will be edited accordingly.

A - Dark reddish beer with a bit of an ambering on the edges. Had a small, somewhat creamy, off white head.

S - Has some nice tropical notes to go with good pine and citrus. Malt backbone is nice, and there's slight touch of vanilla in there.

T - Good malt backbone that gives a little bit of a sweet vanilla and caramel flavor. Citrus and pine hops add a nice touch, and it finishes pretty cleanly.

M - Moderate carbonation, medium bodied.

O - Very enjoyable beer. Got this one down pretty easily, would gladly drink again.

Served in a pint glass for $6.75. Sampled 11/23/10.

A: Amber with red tints and crystal clear. Average sized head of 2 fingers, off-white in color and great retention.

S: Enormous hop character given the style, mostly tropical with light citrusy notes. Bready with strong caramel notes and possibly even a dash of chocolate malt (I may be wrong here though since no one else garnered the hint of chocolate in the aroma).

T: A basic amber recipe with a monstrous hop bite (relatively speaking, of course). 75 IBUs provides more than enough bitterness to balance out the caramel component.

M: The bitter flavor lasts through the finish, promoting the dry quality on the end of the palate. Medium body, ample carbonation.

D: [DRINKABILITY] Definitely an above average amber ale and somewhat unique in this arena. The hop bill certainly solidifies this...

Poured a deep red with a creamy white head that faded slowly but left minimal lacing.

The aroma was of toast, nutty notes, and rich caramel with orange zest and grapefruit notes.

Simple, but complex. An oxymoron of making harmony of some clashing elements. Hints of spice in the back of big caramel, apples, and citrus. Nice balance.

Medium bodied and smooth.

Overall, very good, complex and interesting. Wouldn't drink a lot.

A - Pours amber with a tan foam that lingers. Minimal lacing however.

S - Scents of citrus, and caramel. Kinda like a caramel apple. Funky, but relatively faint.

T - I like that this has some complex layers of flavor. Spicy, malty, and a touch of fruit sugars. It is tame, and I don't know if I like that it isn't just another in your face amber, or if I would like a more robust beer.

M - Extremely drinkable and smooth. Perfect for just about anytime you want a beer. Carbonation is soft, robust body yet not too heavy, and easy on the taste buds.

O - Another solid offering from CCB. This is a good change of pace and an example of subtle characteristics making a good beer.

Poured into a Pint Glass at the Distillery in Savannah, GA. First (legal) kegs of CCB available in Georgia! Woot!

Poured a dark amber-red with a creamy white head that fades to a slight soapy haze. Lovely nose of sweet amber malt and dank, piney hops. Taste follows the nose nicely, lots of pungent pine and grapefruit hops backed up by the sweet amber malt backbone. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and crisp carbonation. Overall an excellent Amber that can stack up to the big boys (N.N. & Zoe) easily. So glad we can get it here in Georgia now!

S: pine and grass hop aroma

T: strong hop flavor. A little sweet upfront. Floral and wood notes. Pine is also present.

M: moderate carbonation, medium body

Had this on tap at CCB. Served on a pint glass.

A: dark amber color with some glowing red tones. Small head that managed to stay for a bit, good retention. Lacing was excellent and decorated the pint glass very vigorously.

S: the smell was a bit mute and hard to get on this one, but I was able to tell woody aromas, clear pine and fresh hops.

T: hops, then some hops and then more hops. They create a bitter taste that goes well along the other woody flavors.

M: medium body, very low carbonation. Goes down smoothly and easily.

O: this was the second beer of the night while at CCB and they kept delivering. Highly recommended.

Poured a slightly hazy reddish brown with a smallish head that dissipated rather uickly to a thin film. Little lace expected but some clings rather tenaciously for a long while.
Smell is hoppy with citrus and a faint malt in the background.
Taste is along those lines in that hops predominates with a slight citrus note and some malt following in the distance though it is more noticeable in the aftertaste as the hops fades.
Nearly full in body, this brew has good carbonation, tangy upfront with a fairly quick fade. A citrusy hop note lingers longest, even surpassing the malt. Some warming occurs late. Another good beer from CCB.

Enjoyed on tap at the CCB taproom.

Pours a copper color with a nice head that retains well and leaves nice chunky lacing down the glass. The smell is absolutely amazing. Like sticking your nose into a bag of hops. There's just a bit of malt in the back of the nose. The taste here is a hop-head's dream. Nice citrus and tropical hops are really front and center here. The malts are just a supporting role, this is a superlative hop-forward brew that drinks closer to an IPA.

The mouthfeel is pretty good, if fairly unremarkable. The drinkability is absolutely stellar. This is an absolutely phenomenal brew, and I'm looking forward to the bottles they made yesterday so I can bring this bad boy home and drink it every night.

A-apricot colored with a thick cream colored head that has good lacing

S-well it also smells like apricot, fresh apricot. some spices and caramel. and a lot of citrusy hops. this is a complex smelling beer.

T-this is amazing. comes in with smooth apricot, hops, and caramel with a tinge of bitterness. the after-taste is a long lasting bitterness along with what reminds me of rye. has a certain amount of spice to it as well.

M-medium and creamy carbonation with a creamy bitter finish.

On tap at the CCB tasting room. Served in a pint glass. Thanks to Tim for brewing this up.

A: Deep amber color. Nice finger of off white head recedes to a thin rim and leaves some sheets of lace.

A: Sweet caramel and hops. Big time grass and pine followed by the sweetness from the malts.

T: Sweet, hoppy, goodness. Notes of pine sap and grass with caramel and vanilla. The beer finishes dry with a very aperant alcohol heat.

M: Medium body with a good amount of carbonation.

O: Very drinkable. The hops and malt bill is balanced nicely. A little too much alcohol comes through, which is this brew's only downfall. I wish they would've filled me a growler of this. Skal.

A- Copper body with a foamy white head that stays forever

S- Nice malty red ale characteristics wtih a citrusy hop nose underneath, intriguing

T- Malty foretaste and moves into a nice fresh hop bitterness finish. A good balance.

M- Medium body and decent carbonation and the alcohol is hidden well

Notes from the CCB taproom on 12/13/10.

Pours a strawberry copper color in which I can see through. The best part of the pour is the amazing head. I am 20min into this beer and there is still a white foam head covering the top of the brew. The lacing is tremendous really sticking to the glass.

If you handed this to me, I would think it was an IPA from the scent. Pleasant malts holding up banana, pine, lemon, and apple hoppy notes.

This is malt forward in the beginning and provide a tobacco undertone. Next comes plenty of hops with are slightly tropical but mellowed by the tobacco bitterness. The end provides some candy malt sweetness.

Medium in the mouth, nothing exciting but nothing detrimental.

This is very drinkable and very enjoyable. Definitely one of the best reds/ambers I've had. It drinks like a hoppy pale ale.

I've actually had this twice, once on tap at World of Beer on Brude B Downs and once when I got a growler from the brewery. Interestingly, the two batches tasted a little different, with the second batch seeming even hoppier than the first.

Appearance is a great copper/red color with a nice head that does its job leaving a nice lace down the glass as you drink.

Smell was pleasant and somewhat as expected with lovely citrus hops coming through while still giving off the nice malt you would expect from a red ale.

Taste was absolutely fantastic. I'm not the best at describing this stuff, but it really is a great red ale with the added twist & uniqueness of having a strong hoppy flavor. As I said, the most recent batch was to me (as well as a friend who has had it many, many times) even hoppier than the first. I'm a hophead so this was a welcome surprise!

As others have said, it is very easy to drink and the alcohol really doesn't come through at all.

Just an outstanding beer, very similar to Terrapin's Big Hoppy Monster (which you should try if you like Tocobaga). I can't wait for them to start bottling it, I heard the newest batch was going to be bottled in 750ml sizes...not sure if its been done yet or not.
