Pours with a tall dark sandpaper colored head. Foamy, and quite impressive vs the other Cigar City beers I have tried. Leaves good rinds and leggy lace. The color is quite dark, a root beer color, though in the sunlight it is a deep ruby/garnet color.
Smells very malt forward. Lots of caramel and dry oak type aromas, and semi sweet cranberry. Much different from any other Red Ale I have had, which is both a plus, but also has me thinking more and more that this beer isn't quite brewed to style.
The taste is very hoppy. Dry pine type bitterness masks some of the wonderful dark malt flavors that I was picking up in the aroma.
The mouthfeel is very dry and boozy enough to trust the 10.2% abv listing. The alcohol doesn't burn at all, but rather just keeps this beer pinned down as a slower sipper.
Overall this was good for a Red Ale, though ultimately I wouldn't trade for or buy a second bottle.
