Poured from a 750ml bottle into a Cigar City snifter. Bottled May 5, 2011 printed on label.
Appearance: Pours a deep red-caramel color with beautiful ruby highlights and a 1-2 finger creamy khaki-colored head. Excellent head retention and lacing. Looks delicious.
Smell: Sweet caramel, pineapple and candied fruits and a touch of alcohol.
Taste: Sweet caramel malt up front followed by dried dark fruits in the middle then ending with smoky malt, and just a touch of hoppy bitterness. Aftertaste is smoky with bitterness lingering in the background. Very malty beer with just the right amount of hops blended in to make it well-balanced.
Mouthfeel: Full-bodied, thick and creamy with a decent amount of carbonation.
Drinkability: Good drinkability. Goes down easily, but you're probably better off sharing a bottle with a friend.
Overall: Very good beer overall. Not on the same level as Tocobaga when it comes to red ales from CCB, but it's still very good. Call me a homer, but I like pretty much everything Cigar City puts out. This is no exception. I'd recommend giving this one a try.
