This beer, which has not hit the public yet, is a version of Guava Grove spiked with bugs and refermented in the bottle, and aged for a year at some point in the process. Big thanks to Wayne for hooking it up. The brew pours a turbid apricot hue and is capped with a thin doily-like cap of white froth. The nose is way funky, including notes of green sour apple, wet dog, overripe orchard fruit and actually a bit of guava underlying it all. In terms of flavor, it is even funkier, with the aforementioned green apple ramped up in intensity, as well as a tangy red wine note, and a lot of hay-barnyard-wet dog on the finish. The feel is much softer, and more Belgian-esque, than other incarnations of the Grove have been. Quite astounding, the road this brew has traveled, from the crisp (theoretical) Tropical Farmhouse Ale that it was, to the pungent and bold brew that sits in my glass.

Cloudy amber-peach pour, pretty active, with about a half inch of foamy white head, which sank to a thin layer; minimal lacing. Decent funk in the aroma, notes of guava, cherry, green apple, some acetone, but within tolerance. This was reflected in the taste, which was notably more tart/sour than the original version, flavors of guava, sour cherry, green apple, sour candy, wet grass, mild notes of acetone. Interesting. Medium body, crisp and prickly mouthfeel, good drinkability. Overall quite good, especially for a beer that is infected--from what I was told anyway.

Reviewed from notes. Had on-tap at CCB tasting room. Served in a snifter glass.

A: Light tan with orange highlights. Very hazy, with low visible carbonation and about a finger's worth of white head.

S: Funky and tart, with significant fruity aromas (citrus, tropical fruit and guava over lemon tartness) and just a bit wheat grainy malt.

T: Follows the nose well. Tart, sour and funky, with guava, lemon and grapefruit fruitiness. Dry and moderate tartness in the finish, but then a flat, flavorless dry flavor I could do without after the swallow. The fruity character increases as the beer warms during the drink.

M: Medium body, plenty of carbonation sensation plus the sour creates some tingly sensation. Moderate alcohol presence.

O: This is quite enjoyable - the interplay between the fruity palate and the tart flavors are nice - but the dry flavorless flavor at the end prevents it from getting top marks from me. Just not quite what it could be, but I'm sure I'll be drinking more.

I had this on tap at the tasting room. The pour was a nice amber hue with an aroma that is immediately sour with tropical fruit and everything you can want in a wild ale. Taste follows exactly and the guava is ever so slight but that is not to say unnoticeable. It comes through as a delightful sweetness. This is easily one of the best sours I have ever had and cannot wait til they bottle it up.
