This beer was enjoyed alongside all of the rest of the versions and with each of the spirits.

Pours the characteristic black with little head and thin brown-gold edges. The smell is of the huge chocolate and roasted malts and strong tannic oak flavors. Smells pretty good, though I get very little of the chili. The taste is the characteristic Huna flavors, with very subdued chili flavors and big cocoa which is cut intensely by the aggressively astringent, tannic oak. The flavor doesn't work at all and would be best enjoyed blended back with some fresh Huna that would bring out some of the chili and chill out the oak. Mouthfeel is huge as you would expect, but with a dry (for what it is) finish. Overall, this was easily the worst of the BA Hunas which went: Apple Brandy > Rum >> Whiskey > Bourbon >> Virgin Oak. Super glad to have tried it, but this is not very good.

32 oz growler.

Pours viscous and dark black with chocolate edges. Mocha head (lighter than regular Hunahpu), fades to a collar, with some legs. Woodsy oak dominates the nose with roast malt and char with strong alcohol; actually basically tastes like wood and booze, not terribly appealing. Char, tannins and wood dominate flavor, with strong cinnamon and vanilla in the finish providing an interesting contrast between bitter oak and sweet spice. A little harsh and abrasive throughout with a slightly watery finish. Easily not the best of the Hunahpu versions.

Growler thanks to ericandersnavy.
Pours pretty flat... alisa nothing there. Black as night as expected.
Smells like fresh oak, and actually a bit like rum. if I would have to guess, I would say this is the rum barrel aged version. lacking on the nose would be the cinnamon and the spice from the chili.
taste, pretty flat, and the first sip was rather a shock... following sips were much better and it grew on me. fresh oak is there, and also a bit of rum. but again, the chili and the cinnamon were missing... I like the regular much better.
thick ass stout, a given. Low to no carb... but overall, I was hoping it would be more... still great, but was hoping for more.

Part of our Hunahpu's vertical/horizontal tasting. Growler poured into tasting glass.

A - Looks like Hunahpu's. Black, mocha-colored head, thin ring, some spotty lace, wisps on top.

S - Smells like apples, chocolate, oak, some roast, char. The apples are what I pick up most and I'm guessing that has to do with the virgin oak. The base beer is really no where to be found in all this.

T - Really oak-forward, some char, roast. Even after it warmed, the oak was still really too much for me and overwhelmed the rest of the beer. I would have never guessed this was Hunahpu's, if tasted blind.

M - Full body, rich and smooth, viscous, creamy finish.

O - My least favorite Hunahpu's variant. The oak was just too much for me and really took away from the rest of the beer. Maybe in time, the oak will die down a bit and we can see where it goes from there. Would have again, if offered, but would not seek out.

Part of the epic hunaphu's tasting in Cincinnati

A-maroonish brown head that quickly disapates

S-sweet oak. I didn't know oak could be described as sweet, but this one is.

T-maybe I don't like drinking trees? But this is just OK.gets a little better as it warms, but not much

M-medium body and smooth

O-eh at best. Nice try, but no thanks

Thanks to Sean for contributing this to our Hunahpu's showdown. Served in a Hill Farmstead glass.

A - Looks like Hunahpu's, but with a disappointingly small amount of foam.

S - Booze, vanilla, oak, smoke, chocolate cake, more vanilla, and roasted malts. Don't really get much in the way of chile or spices here.

T - Very weird. Tastes a bit like bacon - there's a campfire and hickory smoke type of flavor, mingling with oak, char, and tar. Finish is very bitter and slightly astringent. Takes the elements I like least about regular Hunahpu's, and them amps them up.

M - The body and carbonation are fairly typical of the base beer, but there's moisture-obliterating tannic dryness in the finish instead of standard chewy and sticky Hunahpu's feel.

D - The finish is unpleasant, and for some reason there feels like there's more alcohol in here, even though there was no spirit added through the barrel-aging. Not a totally unenjoyable beer, just a unsuccessful experiment that unfortunately diminished and arguably wasted an excellent one. I'm hoping Cigar City chooses NOT to revisit this treatment.

On tap at BA Hunahpu Day. Reviewed from notes. Poured into a CCB snifter.

Appearance - Pitch black with a small dark chocolate head. The retention on regular Hunahpu is something to marvel. This isn't as good. Dies down rather quickly.

Smell - Oak all over, peppery spice and a lot of chocolate. The oak is dominant in this. Fresh and woody smelling.

Taste - The oak comes through before any other flavor. The peppers and chocolate are diminished. The peppers are almost completely gone compared to regular Hunahpu. Bitter and oaky finish. Astringent from the woods. Tannins.

Mouthfeel - It's heavy, but not as viscous. Not as chewy as regular. The oak is too much in the finish.

Overall - Virgin oak barrel did nothing for this. In fact, I think it made it worse. Still a quality stout. The wording of my review is probably more biting than the numerical rating a give it, simply because I was disappointed it didn't live up.

Pours a dark dark brown. Thick am lot black oily brew. Just a touch of light brown head. Looks pretty. Smells great. Lots of sweet apply aromas. Pepper comes through, a touch of woody oakiness. The beer leaves something to be desired. I like regular hunahpus and Zhukov's better. The mouthfeel is good but overall not what i had hoped!

32 ounce growler served along side three other version of this beer.

Beer is black, with a nice dark brwon head, some lacing, low carbonation, decent retention.

Aroma is oaky, sweet, roasty / ashy. Smells nice.

Beer is medium to full in body, the chilies and spice are subdued but there is a mild vannillic / tannic feel to the beer, out of the four variants we had this was my least favorite but still a good beer.
