hello: a buddy from tampa went home over break and brought me back a growler of this stuff direct from the brew tour! i may not have said this before, but jai alai ipa is currently one of my very favorites, let's add apple!

appearance: good, clear red copper. perhaps a bit darker than average for the style.

smell: mostly like an ipa, hops and all that, but with distinct fresh apple. maybe cinnamon too? not quite the "oh god, that's a liquid pie" response you get from say a pumpking, but the ingredients are there.

taste: delicious. jai alai ipa with a distinct bite of fresh apple hanging out with the hops. the cinnamon from the nose is not really there until the verrry end. like an afterthought of cinnamon. like someone shows you a picture of a cinnamon stick just after you've taken a hearty quaff.

mouthfeel: perfectly carbonated, good head retention, smooth, just a bit "sticky".

overall: as far as i'm concerned, cigar city is the best of the best for florida microbrews. they have endless varieties of their ipa, and a few wierd things involving guavas. i need to branch me out and find something pumpkin-y from them. i'd say try and get this apple ipa somewhere, but unless you're in tampa, it's probably unlikely. i've never even seen this in daytona, a mere 2 hours away.

$9.99 for a 32 ounce grolwer fill (not cheap) at DeCicco's in Ardsley, NY.

Pours a nice warm shade of auburn, pretty clear, under a thick, dense and lasting medium tan head. Leaves all sorts of sheeting, and scattered lacing. Nice looking beer.

Nose reveals the advertized spicing, and this is a well spiced up offering. In general it smells like an apple pie. Which is not a real bad thing just sort of a strange thing for an "IPA".

Smell pretty much covers the taste, more of the same. Medium carbonation and body. Spiced apples is the story here. Based on the name, they hit the mark. Tasty and enjoyable enough stuff. With the alcohol not noticable. Cigar City clearly knows how to make a quality product.

Sort of a fall/thanksgiving style IPA. Better then a lot of the pumkin infused offerings that seem to flood the market at this time of year.

On tap at the Double Windsor. Hoppy aromas, with some cider. The taste is both hoppy and some cider, with cinammon and chamomille. Grows on me, hits the spot, unique IPA with decent drinkability. Tart and caramel. Lacey.Lower than average hoppiness and bitterness.

Poured from a 16oz swingtop growler from Decicco's Ardsley into a Lawson's pint glass. Shared with my pops.

Pour yields a 2 finer sticky light cream head with moderate retention. Beer is a cloudy, dark peach-brown. Lacing is stringy and web-like and clings closely to the top of the brew. Not a great looking beer, especially given the style.

Nose is citrus hops, cinnamon sugar, and fresh apple slices. Moderately aromatic and simple but very appetizing.

Opens citrus hop bitterness balanced out nicely by notes of apple pie filling, cinnamon sugar, and cane sugar. Fresh apple slices in the middle. Spiceness towards the middle and end with a very well balanced overall hop-malt profile. Finishes spicy with hints of apple skin. Aftertaste is apple skin and a resin hop bitterness. Really tasty. The apple sweetness complements the hop presence very well here.

Light bodied with ample carbonation. Aggressive and prickly in the mouth and refreshingly crisp going down. Finish is accented with a slightly lingering aftertaste. Average.

While CCB's imperial stouts get a lot of hype and attention, I personally think that its their ipas that really shine. This one is a prime example. The apple chosen here perfectly complements the other ipa flavors and this one just goes down easily and provides tons of refreshments. Glad they made this one for NYC beer week.

Pours like apple juice with a nice head.

This is a little light on the nose for an IPA. Some apple, light fruit, and pear. Good, but not what I expect from CCB.

The taste is also on the light side, but it works. Apples, pear, sweet fruit, more apples.

The feel is nice and full as I come to expect from a CCB beer.

Overall this is a light, refreshing, and drinkable beer. Good for summer.

This one is just as advertised. It pours an amber hue and is capped with a healthy dollop of ecru froth, depositing good lace, and not looking tremendously different than Jai Alai. The nose is quite apple-y, and is otherwise piney, herbal and a bit cedar-y. The flavor carries the same elements, and allows the caramel malt to complement the apple flavors very nicely. Just about medium in terms of body. A most enjoyable brew by CCB.

picked up a small growler fill of this today for the giant game. i've seen this around for at least a month so can't be too fresh (and as a one timer with reviews dating back to late september looks like we are at least 3 months since brewing and ipas are known to fall off after hour 23 ;)

a - poured into ccb snifter. really nice orange with a tinge of red with a darker core. thin ipa-ish head that was gone quick with little to no lacing.

s - yum. sour apple candy with some orange peel. whatever hops this one had definitely seem absent now, but still pleasant smelling.

t - wow that's different. bitterness with sourness. kind of clashes a bit at first. if the bitterness wasn't there, this would be amazing, but not an ipa. there is also some strong cinnamon in there as well. kind of weird tasting but once i got used to it, i really started to get into it. none-the-less glad i don't have 64 oz of this in front of me. hops only appear in bitterness. kind of tastes like a pumpkin beer with all the cinnamon. the sourness of the apples sets it apart.

m - bitter feel with good carbonation and medium bodied. a little sour too.

o - overall...unique for sure. wish i tried this fresher. the apple and cinnamon is cool, but this beer seems to have lost a lot of it's luster or so i imagine. with some tweaks, this could be the best fall beer of all time. has a lot of potential.

Ruby red pour. Thick three fingers of head. The lacing that remains is heavy duty. This beer has a bubbly zing that tickles my nose. Spicy cinnamon aroma up front followed by crisp apple. Devine. Taste is on par with the smell. The maltiness of the beer is cut out by the sweetness of the apple. A perfect reminder of a Minnesota crisp fall day. They really pulled off a wonderful surprise here. My hat goes off to CCB.

On-tap at The Double Windsor in Brooklyn, served in a Chimay chalice

A clear, reddish amber with a thin off-white head. Little to no retention or lacing, although the glass doesn't help. The aroma is of golden and red delicious apples with a subtle citrus hop presence. On the palate, this guy matches the nose. Clean citrus hops lay low while sweet apples carry the load. The feel was medium and was a little under carbonated. The finish was both sweet and tart apples. Overall, this is a unique experiment, but not one I would seek out again.

Thank you RomaniIteDomum - you are a great trader!

Pours that apple juice color that suggests a malty IPA. Nice off-white head. The smell is somewhat oddly muted. Nose is slightly sweet malts with a hint of hoppiness. The malt sweetness has the slightest sense of apple, which fits in this situation. The taste is very interesting. It is clearly strongly hopped, and yet the hoppiness is pushed to the back by a strong apple maltiness. The apple is pretty apparent, and if you told me apple wasn't involved in the brewing process, I'd hang up my palette. I guess the power of suggestion could be strong. I think this beer would flounder with age, but it is enjoyable right now. Good carbonation and a nice, slightly sweet, but not cloying mouthfeel. Overall, I am enjoying this beer and very glad I got to try it. It is, by definition to me, a B+ beer that I would definitely drink again.
