Yet another incredible bottle from the epic finewinemike event.

Like the whiskey version, the beer pours a blackish brown color with good head retention and considerable brown, espresso color lacing. The nose is similar to the whiskey version as well, except the rum flavor seemed to deaden the chocolate and licorice flavor a bit. Still a very fine nose of rum, vanilla, dark chocolate, coffee and licorice in this one. The flavor profile is more of the same, except there was nothing dull or dead about the amount of flavor I picked up in this beer. Mouthfeel is just like the whiskey version, with a long, soft, plush, seamless finish.

Not quite as excellent as the whiskey version, IMHO, but an absolutely outstanding beer all the same.

Poured into snifter from 750mL bottle.

Appearance: Black with finger-thick, brown head. Good lacing that hugs the sides of the glass.

Smell: Smells great. I smell toffee, coffee, molasses, slight notes of milk chocolate, rum, woody notes, and some vanilla.

Taste: There's slight taste of molasses. It's somewhat sweet, chocolately, with a slight bitter finish. Smooth alcohol taste from the rum.

Mouthfeel: Thick as motor oil. A definite sipper. Low to moderate amount of carbonation.

Overall: Great variation of Hunahpu. I still prefer the original Hunahpu, but I loved this beer as well. Look forward to trying the other Hunahpu's as well.

Thanks to dvelich for supplying this Hunahpu's variant. Served in a Hill Farmstead glass.

A - Looks like all the other barrel-aged versions, with head volume somewhere between the base beer and the Virgin Oak growler.

S - The rum is quite present, although it's actually well-integrated unlike many other rum barrel aged beers I've had. I appreciate that the chiles are still perceptible, and the cinnamon from the base beer works in tandem with the spiced rum flavors. A hefty dose of rich chocolate fudge serves as a backdrop, and there's not a ton of oak or vanilla present - guessing the rum barrels are reused a few times before ending up at Cigar City.

T - The taste is solid, but not quite as nice as the aroma. There's a bit too much char and scorched malts, and the rum contributes a more spicy and boozy flavor than the sugary flavor found in the aroma. Bitter and slightly harsh flavors have become too present here for maximum enjoyment, diminishing the rich chocolate and chile pepper flavors.

M - Surprisingly active carbonation for a Hunahpu's variant - hope that isn't a sign of something untoward going on. Chewy and viscous full body, but with a bit more barrel tannin presence and dryness than the base beer.

D - A very enjoyable take on Hunahpu's, but not the slam dunk I was expecting base on the concept (and the early reviews). Still, a successful experiment and one I hope they repeat, after thoroughly sanitizing their equipment, of course.

This was the second of the three BA Hunahpu versions during the tasting at finewinemike's place. Poured from the bottle into my Colossus snifter.

Appearance: Pours black as night and looks to be thick as motor oil. There is a layer of dark tan head that leaves a ring around the edge of the glass.

Smell: Sweeter smelling than the whiskey, makes sense. Dark fruit and some chocolate. The rum sweetness shows up a bit and mutes the smell of the chilies.

Taste: Sweet with dark fruit and milder chilies than the whiskey version. No coconut notes in this one. There is still the heat in the finish, but this is a much sweeter version than the others.

Mouthfeel: The body is quite thick with tingly carbonation. The finish is a bit dry with some head from the peppers in it.

Overall: Great beer. I enjoyed the whiskey more because the barrel accentuated the heat. The rum brings out the sweetness in the beer.

Part of our Hunahpu's vertical/horizontal tasting. Growler poured into tasting glass.

A - Looks like Hunahpu's. Black, tan-colored head, thin ring, wisps.

S - The rum is right up front, nice smooth booze, chocolate, a touch of vanilla. No real sign of the chili notes of the base beer, but I didn't think it would be able to stand up to the rum.

T - I can pick out the chili notes a bit more in on the palate, nice smooth booze/rum notes, chocolate, creamy vanilla. A nice level of roast, burnt sugars, and oak in there too. The rum is a great addition to the base beer and is pretty enjoyable.

M - Full body, rich and smooth, viscous, creamy finish.

O - A really nice beer we have here. The rum compliments the base beer and doesn't take away from it all that much. Even relatively fresh, the booze is smooth and very full and delicious. Would have again and would seek out, for sure.

Thanks to Joe for this one. 750ml waxed and capped 750ml bottle poured into a Hill Farmstead snifter. Reviewed from notes.

Pours pitch black with a dense, dark, .5 finger mocha colored head with poor retention. Thick, oily, impressive legs with spotty lace that doesn't stick around. As expected given the base beer.

Nose is boozy with aromas of chili peppers, chocolate, sweet soy sauce, brownie, and cocoa graininess. Very aromatic, robust, and deep. The chili peppers really work here. Very nice.

Opens chocolate and fudge with some chili spiciness in the back. A moderate amount of heat reveals the barrels towards the middle. Chocolate really gets accented by the rum barrels. Some fudge and brownie. End is some chili spice. Finishes sweet cocoa powder and dark chocolate. Aftertaste of dark chocolate fudge. Flavors are really well integrated here and the barrel aging works perfectly to accent the flavors present.

Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation. Oily and filmy in the mouth and viscous and thick going down. Accented finish with a sticky, lingering aftertaste. Slightly too much bubbles here.

This is significantly better than bottled regular Hunahpu's. The barrel aging works perfectly, the flavors are appreciatively complex, it looks good, and the aroma is incredible. The only knock is a touch of overcarbonation for the style. Still, very good.

750ml bottle poured into a CCB Snifter.

Pours a dark, inky black with a creamy mocha head that fades to a slight ring and swirls of haze. Amazing aromas of dark roasted malt, chocolate brownie batter, sugary Rum, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper. This smells so ridiculously sweet and decadent. Taste is pretty close to the nose, lots of typical big, roasty Hunahpu's flavors of malt, chocolate, and coffee with spices and lots of sweet Rum goodness. Mouthfeel is big and creamy, with a full body and good carbonation. This was my favorite of all the variants (Rum>Whiskey>Virgin Oak>Bourbon), and easily the most memorable!

I shared a bottle with my buddy Wess for his 27th bday. Awesome!

Appearance: Very similar to the regular Hunahpu as it pours a midnight black with a viscosity slightly less than used motor oil. The cappuccino color head appeared after the pour was done and diminished, for the most part, after a few moments.

Smell: It had a rich smell that's for sure of chocolate, a mild spice and undertones of rum/wood that I would assume came from the barrel.

Taste: Smooth. It has the same chocolaty spiciness as the normal Hunahpu but you also get the rum booziness that pulls through. As it warms up this becomes more prevalent as does the malty sweetness that brings everything together to make it an enjoyable drink.

Mouthfeel: Way better as it warmed up. It drinks thick with a malty sweetness upfront and a boozy taste in the back that lingers but is enjoyable and not over powering.

Overall: This was a great drink. I have one bottle left that I am going to let age a few more months to see how things turn out over time.

Bottle shared by Stawn, thanks! Snifter

A: Looks like motor oil as it glugs out of the bottle. Black as pitch with a finger of dark brown foam.

S: Cinnamon and aromatic peppers blend with vanilla and oak. Rum is well integrated. Chocolate is strong.

T: Fudge and strong booze notes with a moderate bitterness. Peppers are pronounced and they impart a light spiciness. Light wood with a little licorice. Booze waxes in the astringent bitter chocolate pepper rum finish. This seems sweeter than the bourbon version, with more alcohol and astringency.

M: Full in body with lower moderate carbonation. The mouthfeel is chewy, smooth, and sticky.

Overall: Good, but I definitely prefer the Bourbon. This is my least favorite of all the Hunahpu's iterations I've tried.

black as night oil like liquid which had a huge tan head that really very slowly faded leaving behind lots of gooey sticky brown lace. Very frothy and pillow like head, lots of waves in it.

strong, main hints were of caramel, with some chocolate mixed in and a strong alcohol presence. Lots of wood, rum and alcohol notes and a smooth woodsy feeling. Lots of sweet vanilla and almost a mocha smell as well, very sweet overall.very very strong. It was smooth, with not alot of carbonation. Huge rum and whiskey type taste hit me right away as did the alcohol, this was not something to be messed with for sure. Very creamy thick feel and very strong alcohol presentation. Hints at french vanilla and a touch of chocolate rounded out the back side and added a bit of sweetness. Near perfection.
