Poured this into a CCB Snifter. The blue label indicates this is the Whiskey barrel aged version of the beer.

A: just like the other two versions this beer pours a jet black oil color with a very little coffee colored head with literally no lacing.

S: the whiskey is definitely there and provides a predominant boozy smell along with tones of roasted malts, vanilla beans, dark fruits, cocoa and dark chocolate.

T: sweet malts, spicyness with notes of cinammon, dark coffee and a predominant whiskey boozy taste that is a bit on the high side.

M: smooth and very creamy; full body and low carbonation.

O: this is my least favorite of all the three barrel aged offerings. The whiskey aroma and taste was a bit on the strong side but nevertheless this is an excellent imperial stout.

Thanks for flying 3,000 miles and sharing this one, VaTechHopHead!

(Aged for 1 year)

Black on black with a small espresso brown head. Spots of lacing left down the glass. Thick and rich looking.

Rich, bittersweet aroma of chocolate and molasses, along with earthy vanilla, and rich barrel character. This is a dessert lover's aroma for sure. There's chocolate, vanilla, molasses, and bourbon in copious amounts here.

The flavor is just a spectacular combination of chocolate, vanilla, molasses, pie crust, and barrel. This is a transformed beer, and doesn't particularly resemble Hunaphu's. This is even more rich, more decadent, simply more delicious. I could drink this forever.

Full bodied with low carbonation. Creamy, silky mouthfeel.

This one ranks.

Bottle shared by nasty31 at NWI tasting group meeting

A - Dark chocolate brown with a thick fudgy body. No carbonation or head on this

S - Lots of bourbon on this one in the nose with lots of whiskey, vanilla, chocolate. Slight alcohol in the nose. This is a strong and complex nose that is great to smell. It makes you want to come back for more and each time the experience is slightly different

T - There is chocolate, dark slightly smoky fudge, a good amount of oak, slight vanilla, and light roasted coffee initially. The finish there is smoke, slight heat from the peppers, light bitter roasted malt and dark chocolate, bourbon, fudge and oak. The dark chocolate from the fudge lingers on in the finish. Really a flavorful and complex beer

MF - Slight syrupy and thick, yet silky smooth, body. The finish has lots of oak and a slight astringency results from that.

O - This is really an amazing beer which I liked much more than regular Huna. There is more chocolate and fudge, tons of vanilla and a strong whiskey nose. The great thing about the BA with this one is that the whiskey makes itself known and has a strong presence but yet you never feel like it is overpowering anything.

A big thanks to Brian for knocking off this long time want. 750ml waxed bottle into Drie Fonteinen stemware. Reviewed from notes at a tasting.

Pours big, viscous, deep and pitch black. Huge legs with a dark mocha head that sticks around. Spotty lace with good cling. Menacing!

Nose is chocolate, molasses, fudge, cocoa and lightly tart fruit. Very robust and appetizing.

Opens cocoa, fudge, sweet pepper, chocolate, molasses, and booze. More chocolate and a touch of roast and more sweet peppers in the middle. End is molasses, leather and dark fruit. Cocoa powder and dark chocolate in the aftertaste. Delicious!

Full bodied with minimal carbonation. Oily and slick in the mouth and goes down warm and smooth with a messy finish and a sticky, slightly lingering aftertaste. Exactly what I want from a beer with this intensity and flavor.

A shockingly good beer that really hasn't lost much with time. This is still worth going after and is certainly one of the better beers in the horizontal.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Reviewed from notes.

Appearance - Jet black with a chocolate head. Retention isn't as good as regular Hunahpu, but I'm guessing that's the norm for these barrel treatments. Inky and glass staining as always.

Smell - Whiskey is very dominant. All the flavors of whiskey, chocolate, and peppers come through in one whiff. They blend seamlessly into a great nose.

Taste - Whiskey up front, as the aroma would indicate. It's a different aroma from Bourbon, which I didn't quite expect. I thought I wouldn't be able to discern a Whiskey barrel from a Bourbon barrel in a big beer like this. It's less intense than a Bourbon barrel and allows the beer to come through. Chocolate and peppers not as well blended as in the aroma. The whiskey flavor is very sharp, especially in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Very thick. Seems to have retained its body better than Virgin Oak did. Very heavy and tough to drink. A sipper, I suppose.

Overall - Wonderful flavors, but it's so big. The complexities of Hunahpu are a little lost from the barrel, but the barrel does well to accommodate.

Big thanks goes out to beeruser and funkydelic for sharing this one at a recent Random Sunday Tasting! Served from bottle into a Mikkeller taster flute. Poured pitch black with a half finger brown head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, roasted malt, dark chocolate, wood, sweet alcohol, and milk chocolate. The flavor was of sweet malt, roasted malt, alcohol, wood, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, and chilies. It had a heavy feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good brew. I have to give credit where it is due and Cigar deserves it for the barrel aging program with this beer. I have yet to have a bad version of it. There is so much complexity going on in this one that it is rather crazy. The milk chocolate aspect going on is very delightful and adds a very nice touch to an already solid brew. The whiskey barrel, while present isn’t very invasive. An absolute must try for any craft beer enthusiast out there.

750ml bottle poured into a CCB snifter.

Pours a dark, inky black with a thin mocha head that fades to a slight ring and swirl of haze. Amazing aromas of chocolate, coffee, brownie batter, vanilla, caramel, and oak. So smooth, loving this already! Taste is a complex melange of dark roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, spices, ad chili peppers with a TON of caramel, oak, and vanilla from the Whiskey barrel. Not as much chili pepper as the Virgin Oak or Rum, but getting a lot of vanilla bean and cinnamon. Incredibly smooth, easily the most drinkable of the variants! Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy with a full body and good carbonation. Overall a great variant, second only to the Rum (Rum>Whiskey>Virgin Oak>Bourbon)!

chocolate tan colored head, maybe about half an inch high at the most, and even this quickly dropped back to just a thin veil of bubbles across the top after just a few minutes. Looked thick, syrup or oil like sitting in the glass with just a bare black liquid staring up at me. The color was a very deep dark chocolate brown,

The first thing I noticed was a tremendous amount of whiskey and oak in the smell. It was coming across very hot at first, deep resonant smell of roasted coffee then followed, mixed in with what almost seemed to be to be like some kind rich burnt tobacco smell, quite unique aThere was some bit of sweetness in there, albeit small; however, it was there and gave off a caramelized sugar note of some sort, bitter dark chocolate mingling in now and really staring to battle it out with the whiskey. Notes of oak now hitting the stage, really giving it that earthy tone I was looking for, and being sweetened up just a little bit b a hint of vanilla floating around in there. Rich dark chocolate notes were swirling around in here, mingling with everything that came there way, including a touch of sweet lactose, which tried to drag some light in here, again, that rich smoked tobacco that I picked up in the smell, not really sure what that is, but it adds great depth to it and really providing and interesting little hint.

Shared by jrallen, I think? Thanks, maybe.

Looks very Hunahpu's-like. Inky, oily black body that's completely opaque. Carbonation is low and there's little head formation. The nose is excellent, surprisingly cinnamon forward with a huge fudge-y chocolate malt backbone. There's a good amount of sweet whiskey and vanilla, too, and the faintest trace of peppers. As with other Hunahpu's variants, this is full and silky on the palate, oily even, with big cocoa and vanilla flavors backed by cinnamon, burnt sugar and plenty of sweet barrel notes. The peppers have really dropped out in this version, but the cinnamon seems more prominent. It works nicely in any case, and stands out from the other BA variants of this beer. Really nice stuff, I enjoyed a few pours over the course of a couple hours.

Huge thanks to mulder1010 for honey-badgering. Reviewed from dodgy notes.

Motor oil black with an unnervingly, dark tan head that falls to a minor ring. Serious viscosity on swirling.

Minimal whisky character at first. Roast is the order of the day, with baked liquorice, toffee, burnt toast, assorted dark fruits, scorched choc-fudge, char and ash. The whisky imparts a mild sweetness, but that's about it.

Taste is much better. Whisky notes come through nicely and merge seamlessly with the chilli and chocolate into a whisky-choc-fudge behemoth. Not a complex profile, just beefy and tatsy.

Dense, rich, and intense, drying out a little at the finish thanks to the whisky.

Very satisfying, if not the manifestation of genius one hopes for in a barrel-aged experiment. Doesn't really rise above regular Hunahpu for mine, although that would always be a tall order. More time in the barrel might have altered this conclusion.

Well I just don't know what to think about this brew. Pours a sticky dark oily black that sticks to the glass with minimal head or lacing. Sticky black, resinous rasin wiskey booze that sticks to the palate and coats the mouth. A small bit of pepper remains on both the mouth and the nose. Licorice and cold irish coffee dominate. Over all a good rare treat, but still unsure what to make of it.
