Notes/Commercial Description:
A traditional schwarzbier, Ligero pours brown to light black with notes of roasted coffee and nutty expressions. The flavor has elements of smoke with roasted espresso beans, sticky caramel-covered almonds and notes of dry dark chocolate in the finish.

Poured from tap into a TBC Pint.

Color: Black with a brown head.

Smell: Coffee, hops and roasted malts.

Taste: Dame as the aroma. Coffee, hops and roasted malts.

Mouthfeel: Great carbonation, coarse and mid dry on the palate.

Overall: A fine black lager but I wasn't blown away by any means. A nice thick body and balanced well. Did have a nice rich coffee taste. A sipper for me. Cheers.

From tap to tasting glass at The Funky Buddha Lounge on 6/2/12
*From notes

A: This one's reasonably dark and pretty clean brown. A minimal tan head and thin collar top this small glass of beer.

S: Medium roast coffee, tea leaves and milk chocolate.

T: Dry autumn leaves. A bit of dusty cocoa and dry malt round out the flavor profile.

M: The feel is decent if not slightly thin. Overall the texture, body and such are a bit better then just ok.

O: A decent stab at a Schwarzbier. I can't say it's one I'll spout off about at my next tasting, but I'd probably have a couple if offered.

A - Dark brown beer with a creamy head that was kind of brownish-white in color.

S - Roasty with some brown sugar and a touch of honey.

T - Not a bad tasting beer. Some nice German influence with some nice roasted/toasty malts. There is an earthy quality to it and a slight touch of spice.

M - Medium bodied with lighter carbonation.

O - Pretty easy to get down, solid flavors, could do more than a couple. Wouldn't mind this one again.

Review from notes at World of Beer - Fort Myers on 11/19/11.

Poured on draft into a shaker pint.

Appearance: Pours a dark cola brown with a 1/2 finger grey-tan head. Nice lacing.

Smell: Dark brewed coffee and toasted malt with a touch of sweetness.

Taste: Toasted malt up front followed by earthy hops and a German grainy quality in the middle before ending with a lightly sweet finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-to-full-bodied with good carbonation. Very thick for a beer with 5.5% ABV.

Drinkability: Good drinkability. You could have a few without much difficulty.

Overall: Good beer overall. Not Cigar City's best beer by far, but it's still worth a shot.

I had this on tap at CCB during a business trip to Tampa. I'm in Tampa a few times a year and love stopping in to sample the latest and greatest.

Poured a black with ruby highlights and a tan head. The notes upfront emphasize roasted malts.

The hightlight of this was the toasty malts mixed with a touch of Munich malt. This was all followed by a bitter chocolate finish with a hint of residual sweetness. The carbonation made for easy drinking.

A nice schwarzbier and a good choice for session drinking.

A: quarter finger tan head with decry lacing on a dark black body with no light passing through.

S: roasted malt and light coffee but overall the aroma is mild.

T: Mild coffee and roasted malt with semisweet finish.

M: this one is incredibly smooth. Medium to full body and moderate carbonation.

Overall this beer is very drinkable and smooth with just the right amount of roast and coffee flavor to be flavorful and appealing to even those who aren't coffee lovers.

Looks like a schwarzbier, black with an off white head that is a little too thin and lacing is ok.

The aroma has roasted background with coffee and cocoa hints, molasis and some spice.

Quite sweet for the style but enjoyable. Molasis and brown sugar with burnt edges and roasted flavors. Spicy notes and some cocoa.

A little thick for the style, smooth

Overall a little out of style and sweet. OK though.

They had this on tap in an upscale cigar shop across the street from my hotel in Clearwater Beach.

Served in a frosty glass... ugh.

A: It poured a very dark, charcoal-like color (or lack of), with a creamy burnt marshmallow creme-esque head.

S: It had CCB's signature cigar ash roastiness, with tons of malt in there to boot. Kinda smells like Jose Marti.

T: I would definitely desribe this as a less viscious version of the Marti, with a touch more bready sweetness. Still... the roast was ridiculous.

M: Very creamy and somewhat refreshing. Sure some sweet elements were in there, but it definitely wasn't too. The roastiness created a mild bitterness on the end. The carbonation and the lacing were both extremely high.

O: This was definitely memorable and will probably grab another pint before I leave town.

Pours black brown highlights when held to light. Brown head falls pretty fast, not much in the way of lacing.

Aroma nice toasted malts hints of chocolate, nice nutty notes with caramel hints and a bit of earthiness.

Taste is great toasted malts again lots of nutty notes, hints of coffee and light chocolate with some caramel backing it all up. Finish is earthy with some light hops.

Mouthfeel is on the lighter side on par with style sporting nice peppy carbonation that suites this brew well.

Overall enjoyable malty treat that's light but favorable a good brew for sunny afternoon on the porch in Florida.

Pours a very dark brown with only a little light getting in. Good sized head develops but drops to a thick film in under two minutes. Very little lace left behind by the dark tan foam.
Smell is toasted malt, wet cardboard, smoke and a hint of coffee. Good balance.
Taste is exactly as promised. Toasted malt, cardboard, smoke, coffee note. Good balance here as well. This beer's taste mimics the smell so closely there really is no differentiation between the two. Probably the closest in that regard of any beer I've ever had.
Smooth, light effervescence, medium-full body. Faint drying aspect. A fine brew. Make it again.

On draft at Churchkey in D.C.

The beer is dark brown with a small tan head. The aroma is roasty, with notes of coffee and chocolate. Nice tasting beer. Light and simple. Easy drinking. A touch of hop bitterness in the finish. Well balanced. This is a nice brew that I wouldn't mind drinking again.

A: jet black, opaque, nice head, good lacing

Poured into a snifter. Growler was bought at the Cigar City tasting room.

A- Pours a hefty opaque black with a 3/4 inch head that soon becomes a 1/4 inch ring around the edge of the glass with light surface foam and some sticky lacing.

S- Smells sweet like honey and molasses with some brown sugar in the end. Hints of spice come through as well.

T- Coffee upfront with roasted spice (Nutmeg?) accompanying. Crisp and fresh which makes it easy to drink but doesn't skimp on flavor. The unique sweetness in this beer makes me sip and sip and sip and sip.

M- A bit dry and thin but not detrimentally so. Medium carbonation.

O- Only the second Schwarzbier I've had that I remember liking. I'm beginning to have more respect for CC's lower ABV offerings.

Had at a Whole Foods beer festival. The CCB reps put this in a couple bottles for sampling.

Poured a deep blak with brown edges. Got a finger of light khaki head in top.

The aroma on this beer is a cigar mans dream! Rich oily ligero leaves, coffee, nutty with a touch of cigar smoke.

Taste isn't as cigar focused but has great coffee, almond, dark chocolate taste with some nice ligero flavors finishing on the back end.

Lighter in body and easy drinking. An appropriate amount of carbonation and a nice smokey oily finish.

Overall, this was a treat! If I would have had a cigar on me I would have been all set. I wish this was bottled because I would be soaking it all up. I have been around Germany and stayed in dusseldorf for a while and I wish their schwarzbiers were this good.
