A- This has a very cola-like clarity when poured and at the edges of the glass but the deep dark brown color obscures through the glass.

S- Pretty assertive hops for a brown. Grapefruit mostly. Some malty sweetness sneaks through as well

T- Again, assertive hops! A big grapefruit hit in the middle of this and it moves through to the lingering bitter finish. A little malt balance in there but the hops are certainly the star of this show.

M- Medium body with a bit of a carbonation bit though it's not over carbonated.

O- This feels like Jose Marti's little brother and at 5%, it just may be!

On-tap at Rattle ‘n Hum, New York, NY

A: The beer is hazy brownish amber in color. It poured with a thin yet dense light beige head that has very good retention properties and consistently left a layer of bubbles covering the surface and coating the sides of the glass.
S: Aromas of grassy hops along with some hints of pine resin subdue the underlying malts, which seems unusual for the style.
T: The taste is a little maltier compared to the smell and has a light amount of bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and very smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This is an interesting brown ale as it seems to be more of a hops-forward beer compared to a malt-forward beer.

From tap to CCB shaker pint glass at Coffee District on 6/2/12
*From notes

A: This looks like cloudy pomegranate juice. Almost purplish. A 1.25 finger dense head leads to solid lacing and and an off-white topping and collar.

S: Asian spice and what comes across as slightly raw hop oil.

T: A bit thin, somewhat watery and then the hops show up, albeit a bit too late. Somewhat juicy, then rustic pine resin. Much hoppier then I expected. The finish is a bit tea leaf like.

M: Sharp, uncontrolled bubbles. It's got a tonic water feel. Light bodied. Meh.

O: CCB's Bone Valley Brown is merely just ok. This isn't really something I'd even waste bottles on, as I don't see this being the kind of hit to warrent shelf space. I'd most likely pass on this if offered, as once was enough.

This is one of my least favorite beers from Cigar City brewing.

There is a lingering bitterness in the beer that im not fond of.

At the beginning of the drink it drinks somewhat like an IPA, then finishes way to bitter.

Compared to other brown ales that I have had it is much more bitter. Not what I was expecting out of this beer.

A: half finger head on a mahogany brown with amber hues body. Very nice lacing.

S: light on the nose with mostly caramel malts and some burnt toast notes.

T: Caramel malts which are a little dull as there is a more toasted and roasted malt flavor to this one with some smokey, nut and earthy hop notes.

M: medium body and moderate carbonation. Body is actually fuller than I expected.

Overall: borders on a smokey red ale. Smokey and toasted notes make this one stand out from other browns. A good one to try.
