On tap at The Top in Gainesville. Poured in a snifter light yellow with small head. Aroma of wheat, some sourness, and light plum fruit. Smells slightly like a Berliner. The plums are present up front on the tongue, but fade into a dirty wheaty finish, very much like what I get (and don’t like) from Berliners. A bit of tartness on top of a light and effervescent mouthfeel. Meh. I could go without.

Italian Plum Single is a tasty Belgian-inspried ale. Sweet and crisp, the fruit flavors provide nice subtle layers of flavor without overpowering. There's only touches of yeast that pop put here and there, and the finish is grainy, similar to Cucumber Saison in those manners. Italian Plum Single is a simple, tasty beer that goes down easily without being a pale ale or pilsner. For that, it deserves plenty of credit.

First, a note - I don't think this is technically a Belgian Pale Ale. From the conversation with the bartender at CCB, it's a "Belgian Single". This would fall under the style of a Trappist table beer, which would be a Belgian Specialty Ale (16E BJCP). There doesn't seem to be a truly appropriate style choice on the BA list.

Reviewed from notes. Had on-tap at CCB tasting room. Served in a pint glass.

A: Hazy gold, about one finger's worth of white head, and relatively low visible carbonation.

S: Cracker and pilsner malts with light fruity yeast esters - I get banana, apple, and grape - and just a bit of spice (clove). I'm not sure I can pick out a plum aroma here, but it's not like plums have a big aroma anyway.

T: Follows the nose. Sweet natural fruitiness (I can make it into a fleshy fruit/plum), pilsner malt, light nutty spicy. I feel like I can find a definite plum character in the fruit, but I can't exclude the power of suggestion. The finish is just a linger of sweet and grainy.

M: Medium body, good carbonation sensation, and minimal alcohol.

O: A little difficult to judge since there aren't definitive style guidelines. The amount of pilsner malt character stopped it from being something that I would go back for a second pour, but that's purely a personal bias. It was enjoyable though, I had no problem finishing the pint.
