April 1st, 2015 - Next up from Breakwater Brewery is the brunette and hazy Biere du Jour. With an aroma like a red sour ale - and redolent with oak and sour cherries - it promises a sour ale style experience, and I'm excited. But the flavor and mouthfeel both fall very, very flat. Musty and with a watery mouthfeel, it tastes completely flubbed, like a slightly carbonated cough medicine. After two more tries, I can't keep going, and quickly move on to the next sampler.

3-5oz taster pour, served on-tap directly at Breakwater. Described as a blend of three beers; a blonde, mead and a stout, all barrel-aged.
A - Pours a murky brownish, with an off-white head. Decent lacing on the taster glass.
S - Nice. Earthy raspberries with a touch of oak, funk and lactic tartness.
T/M - Very nice. A good blend of raspberry sweetness and the lactic sourness. Light body, medium to high carbonation. Not overpowering at all. I could drink this all day.
O - Breakwater was the first brewery we hit on a multi-day, multi-brewery San Diego area tour, and we were blown away. All 12-13 beers we tasted were well done, and the Biere Du Jour really stood out. A well done, subtle and refreshing barrel-aged blend. Highly recommended.

On tap at Breakwater. "A blend of Rabiscus Mead with our Honey Ale and Stout aged for three months on a Brettanomyces-infused wine barrel."
A: Golden brown with a finger of white foam.
S: The aroma has a lot of raspberry and grape skin. Oak is prevalent, and Brett is restrained, imparting light leather notes. I also get cherry pie.
T: Tart and fruity with much leather. Lightly sweet raspberry blends with hibiscus and tannic fruit skins. Oak is evident. There's a lower moderate bitterness. Tastes a little like watered down mead.
M: Medium body with medium carbonation.
Overall: Just okay. Seems like it needed more time in the barrel or bugs added. It comes across as simple and unfinished.
