The Fruli is an extremely saccharine fruit beer. When paired with a drier mouthfeel and a hot, stuffy room, it gives me a headache. Disturbingly sweet, disturbingly pink, disturbingly carbonated. I am not a fan. I can see the appeal for fans of soda pop. It is easy to drink several Frulis without noticing the alcohol content (though there is certainly a taste of alcohol in the beverage). Far more on the side of a cooler, based on the astronomical sugar content of this beer.

250 mL bottle, this pours a cloudy, deep ruby link colour, with a large head of soft, strawberry milkshake head. The initial surprise of the pink-hued beer coming out of the bottle is a bit of a shock, beer looks interesting and shows pretty good head retention and lacing is really nice.

Smell is strongly candy-like. Strawberry sweets, with an artificial flavour feel. Maybe can detect a bit of malt but this is so overpoweringly sweet its hard to tell.

Taste is initially a wheaty, strawberry freshness, with a lot of candy sugar sweetness, quite jammy. It doesn't show a lot of the wit character, this is background and overshadowed by the strong fruitiness. Has some of the wheat characteristics but this is needing more balance and less sweetness.

Mouthfeel is very light, carbonation is too, not much crispness, slight dryness on the finish but way too sweet to be considered refreshing.

Hard to imagine getting this again or drinking it on a regular basis. A very candy-like beer, glad it came in such a small bottle because it would be hard to drink much more of it. Interesting idea, and not altogether bad, it is beer, but I was disappointed with this.

I found this to be an unexpectedly characterful and satisfying beer.

Deep pink, faintly brownish hint, it had a medium white head with faint pink hue slowly shrinking to foamy top.

Aroma is bright strawberry fruit leather, hint of yeasty dough.

Taste is light, bright strawberry sweetness, light yeastiness, hint of coriander, spice. It is crisp, light, and refreshing, but nevertheless characterful.

So I've shyed away from Früli until now, mostly because I thought it was a straightforward super sweet fruit beer. FInally reading the back of the label revealed that it's a white ale with spices and strawberry juice. Sounds like an alright choice for aSunday afternoon. On to the beer:

All 250 ml of the bottle fits inside the Hoegaarden glass. It looks more like a fruit beverage that a beer with its pinkish, beet red flesh. The foam on top is low and creamy in texture, slowly dropping off the edge of the glass. The smell of sweet strawberries are met. While pleasant, it smells more like a juice with added sugar than sweet and tart strawberries. I'll learn more whe I taste it.

My nose was correct. Tasting it, it is a very sweet strawberry flavor. On it's own, it could be okay. With a white ale backdrop, the fusion doesn't get along great. Spiced coriandor interupts the strawberry juice and becomes unappealingly spicy and bland. The low yet bubbly carbonation doesn't help much in this case either. While it is somewhat drinkable, it's not wildy appealing.

I've had worse fruit beers than Früli, though I'd expect better from the makers of those pink elephant beers. Not balanced well enough.

I poured a bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance- Cloudy, dark pink color with a fingers worth of fizzy pinkish-white head. Fair amount of sticky lacing.

Smell- Strong smell of strawberry candy.

Taste- Sweet strawberry flavor and nothing else. Reminds me of a strong flavored strawberry soda pop.

Mouthfeel- Light bodied, smooth, and sticky. Very well carbonated.

Overall- The flavor doesn't really say "beer", but still enjoyable if you like the style. My wife wants to have these again.

330ml bottle poured into a chalice by freshness date.

It shines by a cloudy pinkish red body with small pinkish white head. Load of fruity, juicy, tart and sweet of strawberry in both aroma and flavor also with a tinge of some spice and syrup, malt is there with a bready touch to make it to feel like strawberry soft cake.

Mouthfeel is rather smooth with light-bodied and crisp carbonation, dry finish. This is quite spirited and refreshing by an appropriate mixture of wheat and strawberry.

Pours hazy dark pink with a light pink head that slowly descends to a thin, lasting cover. Some lacing sticks.

The smell is of strawberry shortcake with slight oranges (and peaches?).

The taste is sweet - so sweet I picture whipped cream on the strawberry shortcake that it reminds me of. The sweetness does have some balance with slight breadiness and a touch of coriander in the finish. Still, it remains sweet. Some orange peel is noticeable as it progresses.

The feel is spritzy - almost champagne-like. Light bodied. The flavor doesn't hang on too long.

Again, it reminds me of strawberry shortcake overall. It uses fruit juice, yet doesn't have that "artificial" taste. I wouldn't say this is one of the best of Belgium by any means, but it's a nice dessert brew.

250ml bottle poured into a 13.5oz tulip.

A - Pours a glowing, vibrant cherry red, with a small fizzy head of pinkish-white bubbles. Very cloudy. Decent head retention and some nice lacing for what it is.

S - Beer ingredients are minimal. Very little malt here, and no hops at all. Big fruity character, but rather artificial feeling. Strawberries are there, but this smells more like candy than fruit. Really just smells like a fruit-roll-up, honestly...

T - Artificial strawberry flavor and a surprising malt backbone; quite bready. Subtle notes of vanilla and citrus come through. Still has a distinct fruit-roll-up quality to it. Simple and refreshing, but not really my thing.

M - High carbonation with a light body. Pretty much what one would expect with a brew like this.

D - Probably not something I would buy again, as this really strikes me as a beer for the non-beer-drinker. And between this and the like-minded Liefmans Fruitesse, I'll opt for the latter in the future.

Bottle: Nice little 250mL brown bottle, unfortunate that the label is a bit tacky.

Appearance: a brilliant and hazy light red, with a good finger of strawberry-pink head. Settles gradually to a patchy film with limited lacing.

Aroma: a combination of sweet flavours - definite strawberry as expected, but also a touch of honey and vanilla. I would imagine fairly true to style.

Taste: fair whack of strawberry, but that honey travels along for the ride. Different, almost umami flavour also. Definitely a subtle undertone to balance out the sickly-sweet strawberry.

Aftertaste: undertone dissipates fairly rapidly, leaving the strong sweetness of the pure strawberry juice.

Mouth feel: light in body with moderate carbonation. Would make for an easy drinking beer. For me, it was a first of this kind, and I can assure you it is just as good as a sipper.

Overall: a fun little number, certainly very different. This seems to be a good quality, well-made version of Fruli. It took me a good while to drink this due to the sweetness of the pure strawberry juice - but that is pretty much the point, and hence the small bottle. not to get you pissed, simply to be enjoyed with friends over a period of time.

A random single from the LCBO...

A - Pours a bright hazy red, finger of head with little retention and no lacing.

S - Bold strawberry notes, almost synthetic, hints of honey, fresh baked cake, hints of vanilla and bready malt lingers.

T - Much like the nose, the strawberry flavours are a tad synthetic and sweet, but a unique honey cake malt note lingers on the palette.

M - Lighter bodied ale that goes down smooth and finishes wet.

O - Reasonably refreshing, though the strawberry is a tad strong and synthetic and comes across more like a cider, but the bready malts that linger on the palette remind you that it's beer. Unlikely that I'd go out and grab another bottle.

Cloudy reddish violet colored beer with basically no head formation.

Smell is tart strawberry sherbert. No real hops, little bit of caramel and vanilla.

Starts out sweet with a musty strawberry flavor. Sweet with some balancing tartness. That's all there is sweetness and strawberry.

Mouthfeel is strawberry soda.

Overall this is practically strawberry soda. You might could make a float out of it with vanilla ice cream but as a beer it has nothing to recommend it.

Had this on tap at Max's Taphouse in Baltimore.

The looks like your average beer until you smell it. Smells like a spring strawberry field!

Tastes like a strawberry soda with a kick.

The favor lingers.

If I closed my eyes & turned off the noise in the bar, I wold swear I was in a meadow, drinking a strawberry soda plus (a bow to a line in Escape from the Planet of the Apes).

First had: on tap at Capone's, Norristown, PA

I'd seen this beer on tap for so long at Capone's, and I figured it was one of those beers that no one likes, therefore it sits in the lines forever. But soon after it was taken off, it came back on again. Then I started seeing it pop up elsewhere, so I figured I'd give it a try. Well, actually the wife ordered it. She probably subliminally knew I wanted to try it but also wanted to retain my macho exterior in the process.

Served in a snifter, a orange-salmon color, slightly cloudy, with a small pink-white head that actually retained rather well for the style. Aroma was pretty much straight up strawberry candy. Flavor of strawberry (obviously) and watermelon Jolly Ranchers, slight bready malt sensation. No surprises here; delivered what it promised. Light-medium body, and pretty easily drinkable...unless you don't like fruit beers, in which case, meh, it's probably still worth a try.

A: Pours a hazy ruby red with a quarter finger bubbly pinkish white head. The beer has little head retention and just mild amounts of lacing.

S: Strong aromas of strawberries - like you are in a field of them or surrounded by people having strawberry shortcake. Very pleasant and just slightly sweet, almost like a perfume.

T: Sweet but not overly so, enjoyable flavors of strawberry. In some ways it reminds me a lot of strawberry shortcake - with the biscuits (malts) and the strawberry sweetness.

M: Light bodied with low amounts of carbonation.

O: Extremely refreshing - for more enjoyable that I expected (I was kind of expecting cloying sweetness). Very easy to drink and could be quite sessionable. Would be the perfect alternative to dessert at a summer cookout in the heat.

A: The beer is very hazy pinkish red in color and has no visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high white head that consistently covered the surface.
S: There are strong aromas of strawberry shortcake topping in the aroma.
T: The taste has sweet aromas of strawberries, although the sweetness is not cloying.
M: It feels light-bodied on the palate and has a low to moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is very easy to drink and is packed with aromas and flavors of strawberries. It’s quite interesting because there are not many strawberry beers available.

First of style.

Ok - I dunno how to score a deep red beer.... it looks kind of OK but plain wrong! Head dies - lace is great. Strawberry jam colour.

Aromas of tinned strawberries and strawberry jam.

Taste is like fizzy strawberry juice straight out of the tin. Hops? yeah right.... The cloying overbearing sweetness just becomes too much by the end - and it's only a 250ml bottle.

Mouthfeel is fizzy like soda. Tastes sickly sweet and watery at the same time.

Nope - not for me. Novelty value only. And $$$ xxx-y for small bottle.

Last of style?

Best before 3/2013.

Pours a murky muddled strawberry jam color with an extremely small off-white head that fades to nothing. Thin streaks of lace form on the glass on the drink down. Smell is of strawberry jelly/jam right off the bat with some citrus and spice aromas as well. Taste is of strawberry jelly/jam, strawberry juice, and some spice flavors on the finish. There is a bit of a medicinal aftertaste with this one. This beer has a crisp level of carbonation with a bubbly mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good fruit beer but the sweetness is a bit cloying and the strawberry flavor seems a bit like medicine on the finish.

250ml Bottle

Appearance – Hazy red/pink colour with an average size fizzy pink coloured head. There is an average amount of carbonation showing and there is some fair lacing. The head stuck around for only a minute or two.

Smell - Grains/wheat, lemons, coriander, strawberries

Taste & Mouth - The beer has an average amount of carbonation and I can taste wheat mixed with coriander/clove and lemons. Of course it also has a lot of sweet strawberry flavour - but it isn't too cloying. It ends with a strawberry aftertaste with a light amount of citrus sourness.

Overall – I've seen this at the store so many times and I finally decided to cave and give it a try. Fruit beers are probably my least favourite style but this one actually wasn't too bad. The strawberry flavour doesn't taste too artificial, which is nice. The smaller size bottle was the perfect amount.

8.4 oz bottle into lindemanns flute glass

A - bottle has a surprising amount of info about the beer. It's brewed with coriander and spice - and it's a witbier blended with fruit juice. But, I think it fares better under the fruit beer category. Anyway, I'll just say that the tone of the bottle art etc is not as whimsical or fun as a beer like this might want. But, it's fine.

The beer pours with a nice little half finger of white foam that picks up just a bit of the very pink color of this beer. Some lacing, surprisingly, but not much more than a thin ring of head retention.

S - strong smell of sugary strawberry jam, especially when your first pour it. I like it but can see why others wouldn't.

T - strawberry soda. Very tasty. Not what a lot of people think of when they think of beer, but if you have a sweet tooth and an open mind this is quite enjoyable. As with the aroma, I could see someone not liking this but I do.

M - refreshing, nice amount of soda like carbonation. A little astringent, but sometimes in a tart, refreshing way.

O - if you are wondering if you should try this the answer is yes. If you think this beer sounds like disgusting sugar beer, then you probably will not enjoy it. There are a lot of other fruit beers that get it wrong, with overly sweet fruit juice flavors - I think this one is just about right for me. Recommended to kindred spirits.

Appearance: It has a nice cloudy orange/red/copper color to it. It has a nice thick light pink head that dies down moderately and leaves some lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitly give out hints of strawberries, bubble gum and sugar.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has a sweet strawberry/bubble gum taste to it with hints of wheat.

Mouthfeel: It has a low/medium carbonation with a very sweet balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with bland flavors and aromas. Mostly just strawberries.

A Pours a hazy pink orange color with a little light pink head that sink immediately.

S - Strawberries, wheat, sugar.

T - Follows the nose with strawberry candy, sugar fruit compote, Sweet but dry on the aftertaste. Wheat adds a nice touch.

M - Very smooth medium body. Finishes dry and tart.

Drinks very good with a smooth feel and a nice finish. Reminds me of a strawberry rhubarb sauce that goes great on biscuits.

This small 8.2oz brown bottle comes with a freshness date notched into the back label. This bottle is notched for the 4th week of March 2012, so it's still plenty fresh.

The beer poured a pale pink and slightly hazed strawberry color with a 1½-finger white head that dissipated rather quickly. Lacing was actually quite nice.

The smell is all fresh strawberries. Even though the label doesn't claim to use fresh strawberries, but rather fruit juice, orange peel, and coriander - all I get is fresh strawberries.

Strawberry-orange flavor, but lacking the traditional Belgian yeast tartness. No trace of the coriander spice they claim to use, just a sweet, juicy, strawberry flavor.

Light and refreshing. Sweet without being cloying. Medium carbonation level.

This one won't win any awards, but it's a tasty sweet treat that I enjoyed for what it is.

S - huge strawberry scent with some wheat balancing it out

T - sweet strawberries with a witbier like backbone - cloves - some bitter orange peel in the finish

M - really enjoyed this aspect - sweet yet tart and dry - very creamy and smooth despite the sweetness

O - why have I avoided this!!! Really enjoyable and I will now grab this from time to time when I have a sweet tooth.

a cranberry body with a white head. Sweet sugar and strawberries are the essence of this brew. Delicious aroma but how does it hold up. Chewy and sweet with a soft strawberry flavor. Well if this is what was set out to be done its a hell of a sugar sweet brew with a lingering sweetness. its honestly delicious, it tastes like a sweetened fruit juice, but with alcohol. im not sure i could really drink more than one of these, as far as beer goes it hardly seems as such but whatever it tastes dam good.

Bottle poured into my Bell's tulip.

A: Cloudy orange red hue. Huge two fingers of light pink head. Good retention. Sticky lace.

S: Wow full on strawberry. Reminds me a lot of frankenberry cereal. There isn't much else going on here except pure unadulterated strawberry power.

T: Now the bottle claims orange peel and coriander. None here in this bottle. Loads of strawberry and definite pale malt finish. It actually works. It's starts out all berry and finishes like a euro lager. So weird but not bad.

M: Light bubbly body.

O: Strange and over the top but surprisingly refreshing and drinkable.
