Not sure what the packaging is all about - the faux ceramic is an interesting touch, though query what it does to flavor after prolonged periods. The glass is an oddity as well, with its elephants and whatnot, though I guess it's all part of the overall experience. Once you get past all the pomp, the ale pours a nice golden color with a thick head that holds well and laces even better. The first sip provides a bursting cocktail of fruit flavors with strong honey and mild pepper. Good creamy carbonation. The alcohol is hidden nicely in the sweet maltiness so be careful, it packs a wallop. A bit too sticky sweet for my taste, but fine for those who prefer that. Overall, a solid ale for its type.

Light amber. Darker than Duvel and similar in colour to a Czech pils. Haziness made carbonation difficult to see

Smell is of onions, pear drops and candy. To me this, smells very similar to Duvel.

Taste is of malt, sugar, pear, apple with a touch of booze and a warm finish. It is a bit like an "imperial pilsner" beer as it has the same refreshing drinkability of a lager but with more alcohol warmth and more flavours going on. Bit of booze on the finish.

Mouthfeel is fizzy and palate cleanisng.

Overall I found this to be similar to a Duvel with perhaps a touch more caramel sweetness. A very good BSPA.

My mark out of one hundred would be 93.

One of the "1001 Beers You Must Taste Before You Die" -- #51 of the ones I've reviewed here.

This is a very strange beer. With one exception it's a fairly standard Belgian Golden in the Duval tradition, not bad but not anything amazing. Pours a lightly brownish-gold with a head that disappears rapidly. The nose is about what you'd expect, a sort of tropical fruit flavored bubblegum kind of deal. That also continues into the candy like flavors, although it ripens a bit as it warms up into more assertive just plain fruit flavors and a blast of that funky Belgian yeast that's hard to explain but anybody who's ever had a Belgian in this style (actually, in a lot of styles) knows about.

Like I said, nothing bad but nothing really special, either. The one thing, though, that really is extraordinary about this beer is the mouthfeel. The effervescence here is paired with a finish so bone dry that the moment you register the taste it's already gone, just a wisp of it lying around on your tongue. It's really hard to describe, but the effect is rather like pouring the beer into a cologne bottle and spritzing it into your mouth, you're almost not drinking it so much as absorbing it.

I've never really tasted a beer that did anything quite like that, and I think this is worth seeking out soley to experience it. A beer who's prime virtue is it's mouthfeel is really a remarkable thing.
