Thanks to Wine Connection for this freebie! Label notched for January 2010.

I bumped my appearance rating up simply because the ceramic bottle and reflective, colorful label are awesome. The beer itself pours a deep golden yellow with a tall, airy head.

Smells rich with golden raisin, slightly chardonnay, clove, pepper, yeast, and an alcohol finish.

Very in tune with the nose. Sweet golden raisins, various spice notes like clove, some banana notes as well as a warming finish of alcohol.

Very bubbly but enjoyable. Medium bodied.

This is a great beer in a really cool bottle. Very complex nose with great even flavors. These guys have been around for over 350 years for a reason. Get this.

One of the "1001 Beers You Must Taste Before You Die" -- #51 of the ones I've reviewed here.

This is a very strange beer. With one exception it's a fairly standard Belgian Golden in the Duval tradition, not bad but not anything amazing. Pours a lightly brownish-gold with a head that disappears rapidly. The nose is about what you'd expect, a sort of tropical fruit flavored bubblegum kind of deal. That also continues into the candy like flavors, although it ripens a bit as it warms up into more assertive just plain fruit flavors and a blast of that funky Belgian yeast that's hard to explain but anybody who's ever had a Belgian in this style (actually, in a lot of styles) knows about.

Like I said, nothing bad but nothing really special, either. The one thing, though, that really is extraordinary about this beer is the mouthfeel. The effervescence here is paired with a finish so bone dry that the moment you register the taste it's already gone, just a wisp of it lying around on your tongue. It's really hard to describe, but the effect is rather like pouring the beer into a cologne bottle and spritzing it into your mouth, you're almost not drinking it so much as absorbing it.

I've never really tasted a beer that did anything quite like that, and I think this is worth seeking out soley to experience it. A beer who's prime virtue is it's mouthfeel is really a remarkable thing.
