The white bottle reminded me of eggnog as I attempted to open it. The cork was a b**** to pull. It was flared out at the bottom making it impossible to thumb off the bottle. I tried my blue lever-action wine-bottle-grabbing corkscrew to simply try to grab and pry, but no luck. I thought of cutting the top off the cork and using the corkscrew, but grabbed my pliers instead and had it off in a snap.
A: My first Delirium. Poured into the bottom of my Old Guardian pseudo-tulip brought on a slightly brownish 2 finger head and tons of carbonation. Both the head and the carbonation quickly faded away to nothing. The beer itself was a medium-deep brown that seemed very murky when held up to the light, like unfiltered cider. Held at right angles to the light it yielded an attractive orangish-brown glow.
S: Smells like a Belgian. I'd say that's probably the barnyard or earthy smell I've been seeing references to.
T: A first impression of sweetness followed by an unusual spicy or medicinal taste, possibly due to the 10% ABV. Later on the medicinal taste abates and instead a sort of a sticky sweetness rises in the back of the mouth.
M: Medium thick and moderately oily. A substantial brew.
D: One 750ml is quite nice, but this is more of a sipper. Two would more than finish me.
Not disappointing for a first try, but from the reviews, it appears there are much better Deliriums out there.
