Notes/Commercial Description:
We open the Half Acre time capsule and pull out an old battle axe, Half Acre Lager. In years past, this beer was taken through the ringer of inexperience. Sadly, this beer was pistol whipped and rolled by goons.

However, in the end when we were brewing it at our brewery for draft sales, it was a lager to be respected. Unfortunately, we soon abandoned it as a perennial offering because the lagering time was killing us. A glimpse at what could’ve been. So with a tip of the hat to nostalgia we dusted off the cob webs and laid down some serious lager tracks to offer you, Half Acre Lager, as it always should’ve been. Clean, crisp and noodling your hot spots with quenching cold power. Come take a spin over to our brewery this Friday to extinguish your week with this throwback cool. Growler fills only.

Enjoyed on tap at the Half Acre taproom. Served in a pint glass.

A: Pours a golden amber color with a pure white head forming on the pour. It recedes slowly to a thin cap that leaves sticky sheets of lace down the glass.

S: Vienna malt with light fruity hops. Some mild citrus with a lager yeast sweetness.

T: Same as the nose. The Vienna malt is stronger and sweeter than the nose. Lagery yeast is present again with very light grass and fruity hops on the backend providing a touch of bitterness.

M: Light bodied with a medium carbonation level. Sweet malt finish.

O: Solid lager overall. Wouldn't order this too often, but it's very well put together.

Sampled on tap at Blind Robin, and this new "brewery-brewed" batch was far superior to the contract-brew I remember from 5ish (?!) years ago. Smooth and balanced with crisp light bready flavors and a hint of hoppy bitterness. Clean and sessionable, no hint of hawaiian punch this time ;)

Sampled at the Charleston...

Well-designed label: white type on a faded grey-blue background, depicting a water tower that is a familiar symbol in the industrial landscape on the Near West Side of Chicago. A bright red star gives a nod to the Chicago city flag. It has the visual feel of a letterpressed show poster a la Hatch Show Print.

Pours a slightly hazy amber-orange, with a meager one finger head of foam. The head settles, but still manages to maintain itself. Malty aroma, hint of vague mystery fruit.

Decent amount of Munich and pale malts, cereal-like barley, with a dry bitterness in the finish. Hops are leafy and herbal, possibly of the Saaz variety. The fruit element seemed to add mild sweetness, but seemed a little out of place. It was like artificial pink grapefruit or passion fruit (not citrusy hops), which brought me back to the Hawaiian Punch I drank as a kid. It was hard to separate from this association once it hit me.

Adequate carbonation, finish is dry, sort of frothy. Malt load gives it an above average body. A pint was easy enough, but I didn't have another.

Contract brewed for Half Acre Beer Co., Chicago, IL.

poured from growler into a pilsner glass. Pours a medium gold color

very good aromas of grains, malts, and cereal. Nice balance, but lacking some depth

medium bodied with good balance and a good feel. This is lacking on the middle and finish though with notes of grains and malts

I was hoping for a bit better, but a very drinkable beer

Poured from a 64oz growler into a 20oz imperial pint.

A: Pours a rich cloudy gold color. A short lived 1 1/2 finger layer of foam quickly melts down to a thick creamy collar that is fed by some rather ample carbonation. Sadly, no lace was left behind.

S: Noble hops flash over a malt backbone that shows off aromas of toasted bread crusts and spicy yeast.

T: See above. Light lemon and toasy malt with white pepper. When I came back to the growler, after having opened it a few hours earlier, the taste took on a definite grassy/herbal tone.

M: Suprisingly spicy and peppery. A rich fullness spreads across the palate becoming a bit oily before it finishes prickly.

O: Waaay better than I remember. I was able to try this out of the bottle and on draft during its' first go around many moons ago. This is how it always should've been.
