Big, but not huge, this American Chocolate Rye Stout fires off a lot of coffee and chocolate notes. Balances well, but rides high on hop character at 60 IBU's while the Rye finishes it dry.

Pours black with a plentiful, bubbly head. Aroma is spicy with rye, estery yeast notes, lightly malty. Tastes estery like Belgian yeast, prickly hops, ashy, full bitterness. Finish has bitter chocolate and cookie. Feels prickly and overcarbonated, body seems light. I seem to be in the minority here, but I didn't care for this experience much.

Great looking black beer with a creamy khaki colored head. The aroma has a slight rye spice, smoke, and chalky bitter chocolate. Warm and inviting. Also, a trace of hoppy pine. The taste is roasty chocolate, hints of rye, with a smoky finish. Heavy medium to full bodied, a very satisfying brew.

Served in a tulip glass from bomber bottle purchased at brewery.

A: deep, dark black with two fingers of tan head that fades quickly.

S: smells of a stout with a hint of hops.

T: on first taste, this seems like a classic stout. However, the bitterness of the rye really comes through.

M: great dense feel.

O: unique stout that is worthy of a try.

22 oz bottle poured into SN tulip.

A- Poured nice and black with a dark crema-colored head. So far, so good.

S- Your standard stout aromas are there: coffee, a little chocolate, roasted malt, slightly bready. I expected more rye character, though. The hops did little for me nose-wise as well.

T- Basically tastes like an odd stout. It is almost as if the rye takes it one direction and the hops are pulling in another. I find myself hoping that the next sip will be better but it just isn't happening.

M- Kinda thin, IMO. There is a nice bit of bite at the end of each sip, though. There just isn't any creaminess or richness to it. It drinks more like a runny porter.

O- "Dry-hopped rye stout?" I said(!) "Sign me up!" I came to this beer with no hyped-up expectations; only curiosity and a love of each individual component that Half Acre brought together in this beer. The flavors just didn't work together for me, unfortunately. Perhaps I'll try it again down the road.

Pours out about equal parts black and brown. Light brown head, .33" in depth. Average lacing in terms of stickiness. Head retention was around average as well.

Mellow aroma, chocolate malt, roast were the preminent aromas, I was searching for rye, but it just wasn't within my sensory perception abilities at that point. Perhaps the tinge of herbal greenness witin the aroma is what the rye lends, but it wasn't at all clear to me what was giving off said aroma.

The taste and mouthfeel in fact corroborate the claim of rye. It comes across as both hops and rye malt, not really spicy I'd say because of the greater percentage of barley, and sheer amount of it to make a stout of this heft, but nonetheless, perceptible beyond its lacking aroma. Caramel and tofffee intrusions, we're starting to get slightly complex here. Rye, herbs, roast, caramel, toffee, spice. . . mouthfeel finished dry, not spicy or thick. Smoother than most rye beers. Not too heavy on the chocolate all the way through, even as it warmed. Slightly bitter, slightly ashy, even citrusy at times. Definitely complex, but not for the sake of being so.

Solid effort.

A- This beer pours a opaque black body with a pig bubbly tan head that fades quickly. The only carbonation that can be seen is a few tiny bubbles that glide to the surface up the sides of the glass.

S- The smell of coffee roasted black malt shows through an otherwise clean aroma with some very light chemical cleaner notes in the finish.

T- This beer has a full spicy rye flavor that leads to a green hop quality in the finish. There is a soft dark roasted malt flavor that comes through a bit as the beer warms. The finish has a green hop bitterness that grows as the beer warms but there is also a full spicy rye flavor that is incorporated into the finish. The finish has a slight sweaty taste to the rye aswell.

M- This beer has a medium-light mouthfeel with a slight slippery texture and no fizz or alcohol noticed.

D- This beer has a nice big rye flavor but the stout itself is pretty soft and subtle. The finish is a bit tangy with a pretty large bitterness.

This is a really good Rye Stout. For me it is low enought in ABV to even session (I rarely ever dip below 6%).

Poured into an imperial pint glass.

A. Nice mohagany brown with a black middle that you can not see through. Wonderful rye brown head of about two fingers, with great big bubbles.

T. Delcious, biscut cookies, coffee grounds, the rye shines in a great way at the finish. Man this would make a wonderful holiday time stout. Just enough bitter on the finish to make it rock.

M. Perfect full body, everything I want in a stout. Alcohol is well hid.

Bottle poured into pint glass

Appearance: soft white head that dissipates into lacing on top of a coal black brew.

Scent: Crispy rye, coffee, chocolate and earth tones.

Taste: Thick crisp rye, chocolate flavors with an earthy hops profile. Ends with a cream character, a little dry and a lurking bitterness.

Overall, this is a great stout. Nothing much to improve on; with some aging, this might be winner.

A superior stout from Chicago trip of 5 months back. Well features rye spicy characteristic, hops not overpowering and lending some citrus to the chocolate flavour , some ageing probably helping there. Very creamy thick, lasting head, thick chocolate. A nice drinker.

appearance: dark mahogany body, thick foamy chocolate head, creamy lace

smell: roasted malt, rye, chocolate, coffee, light leafy hops

taste: really nice stout - the rye provides some nice spicy notes. Chocolate, coffee and roasted malts carry the way. The hops are present but quite mellow - this one has some age so i can't say what it was like fresh, but i really like what it is now

mouthfeel: creamy medium body, some spice from the rye, some bitterness from the hops

drinkability: strong

Appearance - Flat and black. Slightly transparent at the edge.

Smell - Hoppy. Grapefruit. Spicy rye. Roasted malt.

Taste - Grapefruit hops. Very bitter. Coffee and grassy bitterness. Rye spiciness.

Mouthfeel - Medium low carbonation. Medium body. Very bitterness.

Overall - Just doesn't do it for me. Barely a stout.

Poured from a 22oz bomber into a pint glass. Pours rich and dark out of the bottle to little head, settling on a nice caramel lace. The smokey aroma blends nicely with a hint of coffee. This stout drinks very smooth and is balanced across the palate. Cellar if you like, but definitely drink now.

Dark brown, but does look a little thin and the head is whispy.

The rye aroma is strong and the peppery spice works with the charred malt and coffee.

Chocolate pops in the flavor. The roasted malt is heavy. Good piney and earthy hop addition. Rye in the finish.

A tad thin, good carbonation.

A very good beer, but would be better with a beefy body.

Pours a very dark brown, near black, with a noticeable dark red hue in direct light and a solid finger of light brown foam.

Tons of chocolate & roasted coffee, with a fair amount of earthy hops, and rye spiciness.

Flavor melds with the aroma perfectly. Bitter/semi-sweet chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, and the rye adds an interesting spicy characteristic.

Heavy-bodied, medium carbonation, bitter, spiced, prickly hops and rye.

Overall, not as solid as I was hoping for, but a darn good brew and interesting until the end. The rye becomes much more pronounced as this warms up, which can be a good/or bad thing, depending on your taste.

A: Poured into a pint glass, a very dark brown, almost opaque black color. A centimeter of khaki-colored head appeared, and left random lacing down the side of the glass.

S: Initallially, earthy cocoa and coffee. But more sniffings brought floral hops, and fresh linen.

T: Very interesting battle between dry chocolate and coffee from the rye stout, and floral and citrus from the hops. This beer has a very long finish, which seems to flip between to malts and hops several times.

M: Surprisingly light feel, but not foamy or sparkling. It felt more like ale from an engine.

D: Between the lighter mouthfeel and interesting finish, I could easily see myself putting down a couple of pints of this in an evening.

22oz bomber poured into a 50cl mug.

A; A very pretty looking beer to be sure. Steep black with a thick and pillowy, coco brown head that stands two inches high and slowly works its way down into a half inch cap.

S: Loads of rye spice, bits of dry, dark chocolate with touches of citrusy hops. Sings of a well constructed beer certainly.

T/MF: Good amounts of spicy rye, deep roasted malts and coffee and like previous reviewers have mentioned there is also a healthy hop presence in this beer that gives it a little extra dryness and a bit of citrus fruitiness as well. Finish is long, clings to the back of the tongue and imparts deeper, mellower notes of the initial rye spice and baker's chocolate bitterness.

D: It's been a while since I've had a stout and I like what I'm getting out of this one. An good sipper, interesting flavor profiles and goes down easily. Sad to see the end of this bottle.

2012 vintage. 8.2 degrees Baumé

a: black as night. thick tan colored head.

s: roasty malts. chocolate.

t: chocolate. roasted malts. some coffee on the tail end. a rye spiciness accents the flavor

m: smooth and creamy. medium body. finishes a tad dry

o: decent stout. not on the same level as Big Hugs in my opinion but that is an imperial stout of course. rye adds a nice accent, not dominant in any way. Not sure I'd seek this out again but glad I had a chance to try it.

I just picked this up from the brewery. And man, did this have a nice aroma. It was robust rustic. There were some earthy tones, like fresh soil mixed with coffee grounds.

The taste had a wrought iron nature to it. It had a dry roasted characteristic throughout. For the most part the flavor followed the aroma. The hops certainly came through and lent a nice bitterness. For me the rye was lingering in the background as support.

D: I couldn't drink this all night. This was a sipping brew. A bomber was all I needed; anything more and I would have grown tired of it.

Overall: Was it hopped? - Yes. Was there a rye aspect? - Yes. Was it stout? - Yep. This was a beer worth trying. To me the rye took a supportive role. The stout aspect took center stage while the hops acted like the rug that tied everything together.

Pours into a 24 oz. Spaten glass with two fingers of sticky lace, and a cratered lunar surface. The dimples sink in, and after a few minutes there's a good skim still left, with a fresh coating on the interior of the glass. It was black with a crimson glint showing in the meniscus when backlit. Dry roast aroma, fairly subtle.

Dry bready pumpernickel and bakers chocolate, spicy with hops or rye elements. Lots of roastiness. If you like dark unsweetened chocolate, the 90% cacao stuff, this stout is definitely one for you. The hops linger in the dry aftertaste, adding a leafy element to the residual chocolate and roast. The body is medium, just short of full, which is an asset. A bomber is the perfect size to get acquainted with this Rye Stout, and definitely not while double-fisting with another beer, duh. Definitely impressed by this, glad to see Half Acre flexing their creative muscles...make this year round guys!!

pours a very dark brown almost black with a 2 finger tan head that left lacing all down the glass

smells of milk chocolate roasted malts

taste - reminds me of 3F Black Sun Stout and other irish dry stouts - pretty hoppy (floral) then the dry ashy bitter chocolate malt

mouthfeel is a medium/light body with plenty of carbonation - very dry finish

overall - a crazy drinkable dry stout - drinking this made me think of other stouts that are as good that are made year round since this is a one time wonder - glad i got to sip on this one

very pungent and balanced aromas of belgian chocolate, roasted malts and coffee grounds. Good depth, but lacking some complexity

Full bodied and very smooth. Not too complex with notes of belgian chocolate and roasted malts and a touch of coffee on the back end.

This is a quality stout. Well balanced and while not extremely complex, it hits the notes really well and is really enjoyable

Bottle is from the 03/02/12 release. Served in a Founders tulip glass and enjoyed on 03/10/12. Review is from notes.

Appearance: Pours a pitch black color with a thin highlight strip of brown at the top of the glass. One finger of creamy milk chocolate colored head at pour settles into a lighter, khaki colored ring around the glass. Excellent lacing, superior retention. 4.5/5

Smell: Intense notes of chocolate malt, barley and rye. Milk chocolate, "dry" hops, and a light amount of toffee and caramel. 4/5

Taste: Creamy milk chocolate and rye spice throughout. Cocoa/raw chocolate, light mocha and hops on the midpalate. The beer has a "spiciness" to the flavor from the rye that grows on the palate as the beer layers and warms. 4/5

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a nice amount (medium) carbonation that makes the spice flavors of the beer pop on the palate. Creamy mouthfeel. Bitter finish. 4/5

Overall: A superior beer to Big Hugs. This is easily the best Half Acre stout that I have had to date.

Recommendation: Seek this beer out.

Pairings: Vanilla ice cream.

Cost: $7.99 for a 22 oz (bomber) bottle.

Split a 22oz bomber; poured into a tulip pint.

A: Pours a near black with some red hues and a latte head.

S: Chocolate and roast hit you first, but a strong, but subtle sourness following.

T: The tang from the rye is present and accounted for. Chocolate is there also, but the finish is all bitter hops...very dynamic!

D: Alcohol is well-hidden, mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, and the modest ABV makes finishing a bomber of this an easy task.

Overall: A very subtly delicious offering from Half-Acre. This beer is part English RIS, part rye beer and all delicious. Like they suggest on their site, "Specialty Brew. Get it when you see it."

A: Handsome-looking stout - blackish body with a nice, dense chocolate-colored head.

S: Coffee beans and slightly citric old hoppiness, roasted grain.

T: Some lingering hoppy bitterness and dry rye grain, mild chocolate and coffee, roast, a bit of citrus.

M: Thick-bodied with moderate carbonation.

O: Pretty enjoyable stout - the rye and hops are a bit bracing, even after the aging, but I think it works with the beer.

My bottle says 6.5% ABV. 2011 vintage (called the brewery to confirm based on the name thank you list on the label; anyway...
Aromas initially start with dark roasted malts with a substantial earthy quality, maybe from the hops, maybe from the rye, the taste will probably be an indicator once I sample. As it warms you get more dark chocolate.
The taste is initially bitter dark chocolate with some coffee undertones. Soon after you are greeted with the aggressive hops in this beer. It's not bitter per say but the earthy hops which must have been used in this brew are much higher than your average American stout where the chocolate malts are supposed to shine. I cannot really detect the rye although it's presence is appreciated/noted with the dry finish. As it warms you can detect the rye characteristics more, not sure I would know if was rye if I was tasting this blind but the fact that I know I can comment on the spicy dry flavors.
Mouthfeel is full bodied with spot on carbonation. You are left with a continuous stickiness following each gulp/sip because of the higher IBU level. Overall I really enjoyed this beer, which is saying a lot because I usually hate dark malty beers which are highly hopped. This rye stout is quite interesting and worth a try if you can find it, definitely recommended for the unique and quality flavors that this brew offers.
