Notes/Commercial Description:
Big, but not huge, this American Chocolate Rye Stout fires off a lot of coffee and chocolate notes. Balances well, but rides high on hop character at 60 IBU's while the Rye finishes it dry.

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Flat and black. Slightly transparent at the edge.

Smell - Hoppy. Grapefruit. Spicy rye. Roasted malt.

Taste - Grapefruit hops. Very bitter. Coffee and grassy bitterness. Rye spiciness.

Mouthfeel - Medium low carbonation. Medium body. Very bitterness.

Overall - Just doesn't do it for me. Barely a stout.

Poured into snifter.

A Pours runny black. Leaves about one finger of khaki head. Slight carbonation.

S Black licorice is heavy. Rye for sure. Subtle hints of caramel and cocoa. Dark fruit, plum and raisin.

T Right up front is rye. Coffee beans are very prominent as well. Extremely bitter and hoppy. Both the grainy rye and bitter coffee linger. Very potent are both of these flavors.

M Pretty thin for the style. Finishes rough, but in a good way. Dry. The bitterness and roasted coffee leave a tremendous aftertaste.

O Very enjoyable. Rye beers are so unique and this is a good example. The flavors, mostly roasted coffee and rye, mesh well. The aroma hinted at a little more than was there in the flavor. Powerful aftertaste. I like a good dry bitter stout (though this comes close to a Scotch ale) every now and then. Glad I had it.

Poured into pint glass. Very minimal brown head built up and which broke down quickly. No remaining foam at the surface and no lacings present along the glass.

Beer is jet black in color; absolutely dark; no light penetration.

Aroma is fantastic! Smelled kind of like cookies, maybe Oreo's. Also plenty of vanilla! This is probably the most impressive aspect of this beer. It just smells so rich. Makes me wonder what to expect upon first sip.

Taste-wise it's fantastic but the aroma is deceptive as I expected a touch of sweetness. But upon sipping it, it is actually more bitter. Tasted unsweetened chocolate; the kind of stuff you use for baking. Also some black coffee. I'm not sure how rye is supposed to stand out in a stout but possibly it contributes to the bitterness. The bitterness is not overpowering; it just lingers around in the mouth; it doesn't wreck your palate like a serious IPA can. Flavors overall are not that complex but it's still good.

This beer has a light to medium body. Nothing that sinks in your mouth like imperial stouts. It does have that nice creamy mouthfeel. Fantastic.

Overall this beer is pretty sessionable in my opinion. It clocks in at only 6.5% (stated on the bottle) so a bomber is easy to finish up myself. I like the flavors but I love smell!

A: Almost completely opaque black with a thin tan head that dissipates almost instantly. I love the color but the head does not instill confidence in this one off the bat.

S: Hoooo yeah. Rye hits you straight away, followed by a nice creamy coffee/chocolate scent. Burnt malt and generic hops round it out. Complex and fantastic.

T: A strong burnt malt flavor along with a generic bitterness, followed by the rye and sweet chocolaty malts i was really looking for. There's way more bitterness then I wanted here, and it's not a peppery rye bite like I expected. I wish they would have let the rye shine through a bit more.

M: Excellent carbonation and a creamy medium to full body. Goes down real nice.

O: This is so nearly a good beer. Nailed the appearance, scent, even mouthfeel but the generic bitterness held it back. Next time I want a beer like this, I'll be reaching for Wookey Jack.
