Cracked this baby as a little pre-Thanksgiving action. Poured a beautiful golden caramel color with lively carbonation.

In the nose, this beer had a beautiful simplicity. Crushed leaves, earth, toasty grain, faint caramel and a little bitterness.

In the mouth, I immediately loved the lively carbonation. Not what I expected for a British style bitter, but the carbonation was really palate cleansing and refreshing. A streak of earthy bitterness cut through the beer, with a caramel-oaty-grain flavor. Not super complex, but then again, that's what I loved about it.

All in all, a stellar Thanksgiving day offer. Unbeknownst to most folks, HA does the simpler styles just as good as the over-the-top hop bombs and stouts....case in point: Wake of the Flood, The Empty Sea and now, Avena Sativa!

Thanks to Chris (spycow) for picking this up at Half Acre on a rainy, dreary, day. Served in a Cigar City snifter.

A - Thin white foam settles to a wispy partial cap, thin collar, and nothing in the way of lacework. Transparent golden body.

S - Earthy and spicy hops, with some herbs and flowers present as well - very English. Malt character is largely toasted grains, with a kiss of toffee sweetness.

T - Taste is quite similar, but with a heavier dose of bread and biscuit malts and less overt hop flavors. Finish has a note of burnt toffee, and somewhat unexpected herbal bitterness lingers well into the aftertaste.

M - The feel is my favorite aspect of this beer. Medium-light body with cask level carbonation. Very smooth texture, no alcohol, and a clean, crisp, finish.

D - This is very easy to drink, and pretty much achieves what Half Acre set out to do. Unlike many of my friends, I secretly like English style beers. I doubt this will be a big hit with the beer nerds, but it demonstrates solid craftsmanship across the board.

Poured from a 64oz growler into two pint glasses. Extra special thanks to HeatherAnn for the assist and for getting this for me while I was out of town.

A: Pours a perfectly clear, brilliant pale gold color. Immediately capping this was a 2 finger creamy/lumpy layer of bright white foam that, sadly, didn't hang around for very long.

S: Mildly perfumed and floral hop aroma. Oats turn up in a slightly sweet and toasty form. Crisp, clean, and restrained.

T: See above. First flavors were strongly of toasted grains and mildly floral hops. The hops gradually take on an herbal tone as it warms.

M: Smooth and full with the perfect level of roasty dryness and hop spiciness.

O: An excellent alternative to the typically gluttonous holiday beer. Crisp, clean, and quite refreshing. Very nice!
