Served in a shaker pint glass at SmallBar Fullerton.

Gotta like a craft brewer that will make a true session beer (no correction necessary from Ding this time...). This one pours a dark, garnet-highlighted black-brown topped by a finger of cream-tan foam. The nose comprises light-ish roasted malts, light leek, blackened pretzels, and yellow grapefruit peel. The taste holds notes of light leek, light vinyl, darkly-/bitterly-roasted coffee, and a touch of the underside of an orange rind. The body is a light medium, with a very light moderate carbonation, a smooth feel, and a dry finish. Overall, a fairly nice CDA, but yet another one that can't find a pleasant balance between the roast and the hops. Instead, the two factions clash more than the Hatfields and McCoys. Shame, really, as the rest of it's pretty good...

Served on tap at Whole Foods.

A: pours black wih brown highlights, bright white head, sticky lacing

S: light herbal hops, medium roastiness, hints of coffee and pine, very mellow

T: starts off with bittering hops and then features a nice depth o roasted malts which mingle nicely with the light hop profile. Reminds me of a hoppy porter, guess that's what this aba thing is all about. Loads of flavors considering its light alcohol content

Mf: medium to high carbonation, light body

O: this is a great session beer, tons of flavor packed into this little beer

The second runnings of Big Hugs. Maybe this is better somehow?

A - Dark brown/blackish beer with a big tan head. Nice splotches left on the sides of the glass with some cascading sheets.

S - Nice roast with some piney hops. Pretty much what I would want from a black IPA. There's a bit of citrus bite on this one that makes it smell pretty crisp.

T - Taste falls slightly flat of the nose, but the nose was pretty big for a 3.5% beer, so this is expected. Still, some nice roasted malts and pine and citrus hops. Slight bit of cocoa taste and maybe just a little burnt coffee.

M - Almost medium bodied with lively carbonation.

O - A nice session beer. Some of the heavier flavors make it feel bigger than only 3.5%, but it goes down pretty well. Good stuff, wouldn't mind drinking this again.
