Thanks, Mark, for picking me up a 4-pack last weekend! Akari Shogun is hazy like an overpolluted summer skyline of The Windy City. Sunrise orange in color, a bit pale, but glowing. The foam is as pure as the driven snow and dense from the second it touches glass. Big, chunky foam clings to the glass like beer nerds to special releases; desperately.
Citrus builds, higher and higher. Orange off the bat but a healthy dose of bright lemon stays in stride. The orange is soft around the edges and mildly sweet smelling while the lemon is brighter and smelling of freshly squeezed juice. Candied grapefruit rind emerges with warmth. A healthy wheat tang immediately makes me salivate. Freshly husked grains bring up the rear. Undercurrents of earth linger, though faintly.
Orange, jammy and sweet, leave fingerprints all over this summertime sipper, front to back. Pithy grapefruit and soft earth roll in mid-palate while the finish actually brings about a touch of grass and a squeeze of lemon juice. The wheat adds vibrancy while the graininess is refreshing and natural, together providing a sturdy base for Motueka.
Bitterness is soft up front but eventually grows to moderate with drinking. The body is light in weight but has a certain presence that seems bigger than it is. Carbonation is bubbly and a notch above moderate keeping this beer flowing.
Akari Shogun is a summer drinker, my go to as a matter of fact. Citric hoppiness, wheat tang, manageable bitterness, and extreme drinkability give this guy a gold star. Too bad it's 37° out...

In the glass Akari Shogun pours a hazy pale straw hue topped with a moderately retained fluffy white head. The nose carries elegant floral tones blossoming into a fruit salad arrangement of tangerine, apricot and peach while also boasting a sweet candied bubblegum. Seductive wheat sweetness and lemon citrus brightly tease the palate while tamed by assertive hop bitterness. Grass and rose petal sensations delicately join lemon and mango juiciness throughout the taste. The mildly lasting finish is semi-dry and allows the wheat notes to shine; refreshing and delicate enough on the palate to make this a perfect warm weather beverage.
