From the realm of darkness, from the landscape of dreams, Crystal Norde is the baltic porter for your fortress of solitude. We channeled some mystic sorcery with this beer, with the proof being in the porter. Roasted up then lagered out for the long haul, this 7% palace of porter hits all the right notes.

Poured from a 32oz howler into a St. Bernardus goblet.

A: Pours jet-black with the slightest suggestion of cola-brown at the edges. 1/2 a finger of bubbly, khaki colored foam spreads out on top briefly before melting away. Lace was drooping, ropey, and sparse.

S: Fresh pine needles and hearty malt roast. Hints of dark chocolate, espresso, and brown sugar.

T: See above. A nice tussle between the piney hops and blackened malt.

M: Quite prickly and astringent. Dry ashy finish sticks to everything before leaving my tongue suprisingly clean and refreshed.

O: This was a nice surprise for a winter beer in Chicago. Dark and foreboding yet suprisingly light on its' feet. Another HA beer worthy of making a return appearance. (729 characters)

Dark body, reddish orange glint in the meniscus of the glass, steady crown of unbroken lace around the edges. Soft veil of skim across the top, long lasting.

Chocolatey sweet aroma, some light dried fruit and ashy roast malt.

Bitter dry roast, bakers chocolate, lightly ashy in the finish. Extremely supple and smooth, full bodied with a long lasting bitter chocolate aftertaste, and some light coffee and roast malt. Pretty seamless, glad I got a chance to try this, hopefully it enters the regular rotation in the cooler months.

Makes me want to throw on some Vinterriket and tackle a growler while the snow piles up outside... Next year! (644 characters)

32 oz. growler served in a Cigar City snifter.

A: Pours a semi clear brown with a thin wispy head forming on the pour. Some splotches of lace are left down the glass.

S: Residual fruity esters from the yeast. Light roasted malts and some minimal unsweetened chocolate.

T: Nicely malted. Creamy and roasted malts with a sugary base. Dark chocolate with a light hop bitterness and a mild astringent dryness from the roast.

M: A little light for a Baltic porter with some medium carbonation and a drying roasted finish.

O: Very solid Baltic porter. A tad two fruity for me, but otherwise there's nothing wrong with this. Easy drinking. (638 characters)
