Cask at Night of the Living Ales. Served in the obligatory taster pint glass.
A - Tan foam settles to wisps and a thin collar. Dark brown body with ruby-tinted transparency at the edges of the glass. As usual, Half Acre's firkins yield attractive brews.
S - Rum and raisin are quite expressive, and add an interesting spicy note to the already-present rye, roast, and semisweet chocolate. The combo works for me.
T - The taste is unfortunately not quite as successful for me. There's lots of dark fruit and raisin sweetness, along with some baker's chocolate, molasses, and roast, but the finish is a combo of char, rum, and spice that doesn't work well and comes off as harsh.
M - Medium body, lower carbonation, chewy texture, and lots of residual stickiness to it. No alcohol, as one would expect.
D - Started off really promising, but the unpleasant finish really marred the beer to the point where I could only have a few ounces. The concept is a good one, so I'd like to see them give it another shot - perhaps a different base beer or brand of rum would work better?
