Some might say that flavor can evoke more than flavor. Certain flavors trap your brain and overpower your circumstance. Searching through the catalog of heady hallmark flavors, we present you with the coconut. Some would agree that the coconut has the undefinable shifting quality that ushers your brain towards a more tranquil, beach infused setting. The smell, the sight and the taste of coconut just might transport you to a subtropic strip of sand with fewer edges and less rush.

Pull up a seat and kick off your shoes, we've shot to put the lounge in your glass. Hot Tropic Pale Ale is brewed with Motueka hops and carved up with ample amounts of raw coconut.

Give it a ride, let it ease into you and maybe you'll find yourself in a different place altogether.

32oz growler poured into a Half Acre 16 Pint glass

The beer pours a very clear copper color, hues of gold and straw with a fizzy finger of white head that has moderate retention and leaves behind a touch of lace. The aroma is very faint, lightly hopped with touches of pine, grapefruit, pineapple with some creamy coconut and sweet malt. The balance is nice, but it's so light and uninspired. The flavors are nice and a bit more impactful, much bigger hop presence, catty pine, zesty citrus with a bit of tropical fruit with some toasted coconut and sweet yet pale malt at the finish. The body is crisp and very lively with an abundance of carbonation and a bit of a skuzzy yet creamy finish.

Verdict: An average pale ale from Half Acre, and far from their best showing. The addition of coconut is hardly noticeable and doesn't really do much for the base beer, more hops and more coconut might make this beer a bit more interesting, but as it stands, it's quite boring.

On-tap at the Half Acre taproom. Served in a pint glass.

A - White foam settles to a near-complete cap, thick collar, and plenty of splotchy lace. Transparent golden body.

S - Interesting - the Motueka hops impart an herbal and almost noble quality to the beer, but with a touch of melon. I initially thought this might be one of the obscure German varieties Half Acre was playing with, but then decided it was some sort of New Zealand hop. Glad my nose is working properly! Doughy and yeasty malt bill that reminds me a little of Gossamer. Not getting much coconut at all here.

T - The taste is a bit less complex, with yeast, dough, and perhaps a hint of sweet coconut flesh. There's a vague hand lotion flavor and a mild seltzer quality in there for good measure. But yeah, the dearth of coconut is a bit disappointing.

M - Medium body, moderate carbonation, a touch toasty, but otherwise pretty soft and creamy. Mildly dry in the finish. Crisp and refreshing.

D - I wish there was more coconut and hop flavor. The base is perfectly acceptable pale ale, but it's not very interesting. Might drink again as a change of pace, but there are too many other enjoyable hoppy offerings from Half Acre to warrant spending a lot of time here.
